Welcome to five Minute Reasons, where we explore and debate your reasons behind some of the most foundational, astonishing, or controversial claims of our time.

Speaker 1

Episode one, truth is subjective and humans can understand it.

Speaker 1

So what do I mean by subjective and what do I mean by truth?

Speaker 1

By subjective, I mean a thing that is based on or subjected to personal thoughts, feelings, interpretations, or perspectives.

Speaker 1

And in regards to truth, I like Aristotle's definition in his book on metaphysics.

Speaker 1

He says, To say of what is that it is not, or what is not that it is, is false.

Speaker 1

While to say of what is that it is or what is not that it is not is true, which is a fun way to say that truth is that which is in accord with reality or even simpler, truth is telling it like it is.

Speaker 1

Given this definition, there are two things that are required for the truth to exist.

Speaker 1

First, a thinker, and second, the object of thought.

Speaker 1

A thinker is necessary because without a thinker, there is no telling it like it is as there is no telling.

Speaker 1

An object of thought is necessary because without the object, there is no it to be thought.

Speaker 1

This would seem counterintuitive to the idea of truth at first.

Speaker 1

After all, stones buried deep in the earth are true stones even if nobody is thinking about them.

Speaker 1

And I agree with the general assertion, things do happen beyond our own observation and intellect.

Speaker 1

However, it's not necessarily our intellect that I am proposing the truth is subject to.

Speaker 1

In the legal world, if an attorney wants to discover the meaning behind the language in a statute, the attorney will look to the creator of the law to discover its meaning.

Speaker 1

The attorney might search for what is called legislative intent as, obviously, the legislators, I.

Speaker 1

E, the creators of the statute, intended the law to mean something when they created it.

Speaker 1

Similarly, someone might ask the speaker to clarify what they mean by their speech because it's the creator that has the knowledge, the authority, and the liberty to say what is true about their creation.

Speaker 1

But much in the world is not of human creation, and therefore its truth is not subject to the human mind.

Speaker 1

And so the natural things not created by humans are said to be true insofar as they express the likeness of their forms that are in the mind of their creator.

Speaker 1

Therefore, truth is subjective as the truth of the creation is subject to the mind of its creator.

Speaker 1

In regard to us being able to understand the truth, we too are created beings.

Speaker 1

The powers by which we understand truth are also created.

Speaker 1

We are either created by an intelligent creator who created us to be able to know the truth or we are not.

Speaker 1

And if we are not, then there is little reason to believe and to trust that anything that we think is true, including math, the sciences, logic, and our own powers of observation, as the human is not created to be able to perceive or understand the truth.

Speaker 1

But if we are, then we have good reason to believe that we are able to perceive and understand the truth, meaning that we are given access to the truth, which is in the mind of the creator.

Speaker 1

The more we are able to understand the thoughts of the creator, the more we are able to understand the creation and therefore the truth.

Speaker 1

Certainly, one reason to think that we are so designed to be able to understand the truth is our desire for it.

Speaker 1

Aristotle aptly put in his first line of the Metaphysics that all men by nature desire to know.

Speaker 1

It is of no coincidence that people by nature have a great desire for things like food, oxygen, love, friendship, and happiness, as it's clear by our bodies and our psyche that we are specifically designed to be able to eat, to breathe, to love, form friendships, and be happy.

Speaker 1

And these things are made available to us.

Speaker 1

Perhaps even greater than our desire for food, friendship, and happiness is our desire to understand the truth, and so likely is its availability to us and our ability to understand it.

Speaker 1

So in conclusion, truth is subjective because the truth of a creature is subject to the thoughts of its creator, and humans can understand truth because our creator designed us to be able to understand the truth.
