Hey Ben, in your experience skiing around with a lot of people trying to train for the level three, level four, the higher end certificate of an instructor, what's like something you see that is missing very often in their training?

I think in all their training, but particularly bumps, it's the athleticism piece. I can spot someone training for level three from about a kilometer away, sitting inside the lodge eating lunch. They're trying to do the perfect turn, perfect rhythm, everything's symmetrical. You see them like timing their pole plant, you know, trying to paint the picture they think the examiners want to see. So they get really good at doing that and then when things change, you know, change, variety changes, you know, but especially in the bumps, they get out of balance, yeah, then they don't know what to do.

Particularly in the bumps, you know, we're training this perfect turn all the time and in the bumps, three, four meters apart. You know, you just need to be able to move quickly, you'll be able to adapt, you'll be get out of balance and pull it back in. And if we don't train that, we can't do it.

I mean, think the first thing is training a short short term out of the bumps. You know, when we're training our calves short term for an exam, you know, your apex from 10 to 10 is probably 10 to 12 meters. Right? In the bumps, in a man made course, so where we often examine our level three, level four, the bumps are three and a half meters apart. So you have to do your turns three times quicker than you normally would.

If you can't do that on the flats, you know, there's no way in hell you're gonna manage your tippies out in the bumps and you also have to deal with absorption and all these other things. So it's going to somewhere flat and just practicing quick feet short turns. You know, you need to be balanced to move your legs quickly, right? But not, you know, you're not worrying about, oh, yeah, I heel pushed that one or I skidded that one. Like, just move the feet on the flats.

Get it moving. Get the tempo. It doesn't have to be a high speed down the hill, but increase that tempo of turn. Right? And then go and do that in the bump, but take the easiest, flattest bumps and just try and move the feet.

Yeah, well you know how bad the season was, sort of warm temps all the time and not tonnes of snow. I sort of took it on myself to make it that year to work on getting like a triple turn, like a double turn in the bumps, And so every time I was coming down to like the Kraken back chairlift or whatever and it was flat, I would just practice those like fast, fast, fast, fast, as fast as I could, even though I knew I looked silly and sometimes like my feet went apart and I lost my balance. But know, thousand turns later I can start getting closer to doing it and it's just yeah, that athleticism and tempo change, absolutely. Yeah, massive thing that I think a lot of people overlook.

I think in skiing, it is a series of linked recoveries. Every time your feet do split or you throw a beer can out the window, you're learning to recover and regain balance from that situation. You know, I'll use like whistles as an example, you know, level three bumps might be on something like whistle vault and it's quite, you know, it's quite steep and it's quite challenging. So if people are kind of newer to that level three process, you know, they're not able to send it down those bumps. So they're never pushing that limit if they're always training on what they've perceived through that exam pitch.

So that when they do get out of balance, they're not used to recovering from that.

Now to give the audience a bit of context, and even myself, the first time I remember officially meeting you is in Sun Peaks, and I know we sort of know of each other. We hear each other's names from the ski coaching world. But yeah, can you give us a bit of a background? What's your ski background, Ben?

So I did a little bit of the inter schools competitions in Australia, but only at a very recreational level. So I did a gap year, you know, doing that in Banff and Perisher before university. And then since university, what, ten years on the trot just between Perisher and Whistler.

But then when we get into spring, as we move to spring operations and some of the Australian athletes come out and we'll be doing a lot more mobile stuff in spring.

So we got a mobile pilot with 10 moons and I remember stabbed the monster in the toes and punched him in the nose and the glass ceiling for absorption.

I think it's a really good one for instructors that are, I guess, looking to mogulify their technique to look a little bit more like a competition mogul skier. Instead of having a big sort of a swinging pole plant, right, you want it like a really kind of light delicate touch. So if you've got a little gremlin in front of you that's, you know, four foot high, you just want to stab them in the toes and punch them in the nose, right? I think too, instead of, know, to use the punching analogy, instead of swinging big like haymakers or uppercuts, it's just a little jab. Yes.

Yep. And so in terms of like later on then, as you start to refine things, maybe looking at video of your own bump skiing, can you think of some other like more advanced breakthroughs that you made?

When I first started coaching, you know, with the Parish and Winter Sports club team, I was super lucky to have, you know, some really, like, good coaches there, like George Lille, Pete McNeil, who's now, you know, coached a couple of Olympic gold medalists, and Josh Himbury, who's the current president of the APSI. So a lot of it was working on like the turn shape and so having more of a carve turn in the bumps as opposed to pivoting down the course. And then personally as well, just the absorption, range and timing and having access to like a roller tank to isolate those movements would probably be a key thing for me and actually what I'm still working on in advance.

So like can you break that down? How, like what might it look like before you started working on this, like I'm going put inverted commas, carving the bumps. What did that look like versus, yeah, that versus before?

I think it's a good sort of segue into, I guess, maybe a misconception about competitive mobile scheme, know, or like, you know, in in the zipline course that we just pivot or slide through the bumps. I think at an elementary level, that's, you know, briquage is a really good way to stay in the course. You know, that's goal number one is to get from the top of the line to the bottom. You know, briquage kind of moves, you know, controls your speed, keeps you in the line, keeps you in balance. But at the upper end, we're trying to carve the way through the course.

I think you know, more of a Australian definition of carving, which is where we have a lot of edge angle, but there is still some twisting of the ski, so it's not a purely locked on edge.

And you know, some analogies I think for me that really help with that is that tip into the bump. You know, if your tip of the ski can impact the bump first, right, while it might be a more direct or more aggressive line, your timing of absorption is spread out over the whole length of the ski. So it actually makes it way smoother as opposed to if you pivot and slide into the bump and the foot hits it first, all that impact comes on like instantaneously. So taking like a more direct approach, you know, actually in the long run, it takes a while to get the hang of it, but in the long run it's going be smoother and you're actually be going slow as smooth, smooth as fast.

Yeah, yeah, totally. So that must be like a big thing you are coaching, especially in the Aussie season when you are doing more mogul stuff. And you mentioned the roller tank, I was recently in Japan and a few of the places I went to they had that and I think that's such a valuable of bit of terrain for people to learn on. Do you want to just talk about the roller tank, what it is exactly and if people see one, what would be like two things they could go try on it?

Yeah. From like a competition sort of modal setup, you know, we'll build a wave tank or roller tank where we kind of have, maybe six to eight kind of rolls just you know, pushed up by the cat probably six meters apart, so slightly more spaced than they are in the course and just allows us to isolate that movement and can just hike it, repeat a lot.

It depends what you're working on. Generally very flat. We often really isolate the movement where we're going in a straight line and purely working on the absorption. Some places will build more of like a ski across roller tank where they're a little bit larger rolls and a bit smoother, and so you can actually work on like the timing of edge change in the transition over the rolls as well. Without access to a roller tank, you know, spines like running on the edge of groomers.

You're isolating those, you know, that same movement. In terms of the movement we're looking for is, I mean, two things I think, like range of movement. You know, a lot of us don't have enough range.

You know, a bit crude, but I say, try and jam your binding up your ass. That's how strange, you know, we want to unlock. And then secondly, and this is I think a lot of instructors get a little caught, is trying to have most of that absorption coming from ankle and knee and keeping that kind of chest upright.

Like is that what you find when you get people to say, zip line, hey, let's step away from that, we're going to work just on maybe the range piece. If you had a roller tank, is that what you would go and do as a progression to help that?

Yeah. I mean, I think having a pretty unique blend, so that zipper line, you know, coaching, but then skiing a lot of free bumps in Canada. You know, I had to do free bumps for my exam piece level four here, and I think watching Richie Berger's videos, you know, imagination is one specifically, where you watch him ski the free bumps, and he actually applies quite a lot of kind of competition mogul, I guess, approaches to how he skis the three bumps. You know, I'm trying to ski almost what I call the inside wall of the bump and so staying in kind of that zipper even in free thrust. Obviously as it gets steeper, that gets trickier, and that's where training that athleticism piece is definitely something, you know, I go, you know, early season, I just hammer, you know, shale slit whistle mould in Whistler and, you know, I'll throw every third turn, I'll throw a beer can out the window, which is teaching to recover from that. So when we're skiing a free bump modal field, what we typically find in North America, Canada, and we had a rhythm change. You know, so you got bump, bump, bump, bump, and then a big space to another bump. We often choose a drawn out longer term and I think that often allow, like it slows down the rhythm, but it also can put us into a skid, know, can disrupt us, put us out of balance, it slows down the rhythm.

And I've kind of, I've stolen this analogy from Guy Hetherington, so I guess credit to him and sort of Bill Tonawat, but I like to think of skiing bumps a bit of like a dance with a mountain. You know, a waltz, you know, a ballroom waltz, it's elegant, you know? And it's smooth and it is beautiful to watch. But with my own skiing, I'm trying to be, I guess, as exciting as possible. So I'm kinda aiming up for more of like a tango or even like a salsa, you know?

And so when we have that disruption of rhythm, if I can do two quick turns on one bump, so I can actually up the tempo instead of slowing the tempo down, I think that's gonna make my scheme more exciting. And so that might mean, you you have one five meter long bump, you've got to do two turns on it. And so you know, you've got to use a lot of ankle triangulation. You can't get your hip inside of the turn. You don't have enough time, right?

Or you can even use a dolphin turn move to air it. Know, so instead of doing one drawn out turn that's gonna lead me into a scared, maybe push me into the back seat, push me inside, slow down that tempo. If I can do a dolphin turn or a double turn on one bump, that's my, I think of the tango where you let your partner down to the floor and pull them back up, that's that sort of pizzazz moment that people watch you, like that's exciting skiing that I wanna watch.

Yeah, I totally agree. I've been thinking about this because you and I are not competing, but there's still an element to our skiing that we try and work on where it's not just we can ski down this black mogul run, you know, there's a point where it's actually enjoyable to work on the things you're talking about, like excitement, style you'd even call it, like you must look at your own video and you kind of go, oh, I want to change this about it or that doesn't appeal to me just visually. Sure, you're still getting from A to B, you're in control, you know, all those sorts of things. But, yeah, do you want to speak to that? Because that's certainly something I enjoy about skiing, is it's not just about being completely functional, I do like style.

I mean, it's actually gonna be easier for me to take that to my big mountain skiing or the freeride skiing, which I do a lot on here. And so you see, you know, some of the freeride club coaches or some of the pro skiers, you know, around, they might have, you know, a super chargey style, you know, they ski everything like super fast, super full line, you know, they're skating like, you know, through all the bumps, you know, as they're skiing down. And sometimes I like to do that, But a lot of the times I'm trying to be like more flowy, you know, and so smoother and trying to like use the train to my advantage rather than like fighting against it. Or you know, like holding on for the life of the bumps. That's something I'm definitely, I guess, trying to add my style into my like freeride and big mountain skiing, you know, for sure.

And so I'm sort of trying to look to get airborne as much as I can as it suits the terrain, you know, and the rhythm. Know, I've got caught out where I've tried to force an air where the bumps they didn't work and, you know, I'm slamming into the upside of a of a mogul. But, you know, wherever it works, you know, I can do three, four, like, dolphin turns to change lines in the bumps. Like, I think that looks awesome.

Yeah. Once it's flagged, know, your coaches and your athletes, just do hockey stops down the course. So you do our kind of cue is toe piece all the way to the flag, depending how soft the snow is and how steep the pitch is. You know, with 30 people, you know, maybe four or five passes through, you've kind of already got your bumps. So then you kind of progress from hockey stops to, know, kind of hockey slides or like a moving brecage, you know, and you still ski a much slower, you round the turn until the bumps are kind of, you know, formed.

At some point you're gonna have these big slush piles that are, you know, almost triangles. So you know, once they get to the kind of critical mass of size, they'll do a bit of a step which will like kind of smooth it out, know, round them from kind of triangles to sort of mounds. If you're going to do this yourself, I think the two, I guess the key thing is picking the right sort of snow conditions and day. Know, you have the ability to request like a late groom, you know, if the cat can get off at seven a. And you can flag it at eight, you know, it doesn't set up too much and will be really, it'll be really soft.

I mean, we build one on the blue race lanes for anyone who who knows Perisher. Like we've done it just on exams at Perisher on international T Bar, we've had what, 40 people follow a coach and one lap through, if it's slushy, you've already got a bump fight. Well I think actually the process of building a course, you know, for like people in a ski school, you know, you can just ski one in, you know, on the edge of a groomer where you know it's not getting groomed. And the process of skiing it in, you can actually get so much benefit, you know, because you're learning to just the rhythm, you know, the timing of movements. You know, if you're coaching athletes, know, essentially, you know, after your first lap at hockey stops, you're just doing the carbs through the course. So it's really good for working on your leg turning, body position, your hand position. And all that time, you're not really having to think about absorption because there's no bumps yet.

Do you want to speak to that?

Yeah, all skiing comes down to how we stand on our skis. I'd love to do a blind study of following a group down a cat track and telling a coach, know, guessing from watching a group ski down the cat track who's the best skier in the group. And I think any sort of good instructor or good coach could probably, you know, pick that out with like ninety percent success rate. But you can see who can stand well on their skis. In terms of boots, your ankle flexes, you know, being able to like engage your ankle is like the difference between a good scare and a great scare.

I think so many kids are in boots that, know, I mean we always talk about people in boots that are too big and that's the easy one. Even when people are sometimes fitted, they're in boots that are too stiff. So if you can't actually flex the boot, or you know, were talking earlier, we sometimes see kids that they might be able to bend, you know, bend their ankles, their shin's moving, but it's moving inside the boot, the actual plastic of the shell is not moving with them. It's gonna make it really hard to stand in your skis, and if you can't stand out in your skis, you can't really do anything else to a super high degree of precision.

Yeah, we talk about talk about stance and talk about flexing the ankle, getting knees over toes, nothing happens. And so, yeah, almost every time I see with a new group of kids and even adults, it's I'm checking someone's boots at lunch. And not so much the fit, but more like can they actually flex it and can they get their knees over their toes? Because I think a lot that are in boots that are too stiff. I think some reasons for that, and I'm not an expert boot fitter, but we've been getting boot fitters in without coaching team.

You know, but some things, you know, I've seen is you might have a 14, one of our 13 year old girls last year, she was in the same size boot as me. You know, I'm not a massive guy, but you know, I weigh seventy two kilos, five foot nine. You know, she would be like three inches shorter than me and probably weighs half as much. But you know, her foot has grown, but she's still, you know, a little human.

They're the same boot, but I've got an older pair and a newer pair and so all I've done to mobile fight in my, I'm in a four buckle race boot and I've taken out the two bolts in the back actually. I've got, actually picked up my housemate's boot and it's a touring boot with Walkmate so I can't show what I was hoping. But yeah, you take out the two bolts at the back, softens it. You can always just take out the top bolt first.

You know, if you want to try just a little bit take the top bolt up first and I've just put some spoilers here. Yeah, I do some slightly different things but with the same goal of trying to get my boot more, better flexing, so I leave the bolts in the back of my race boot, but where the top part wraps around and that butt usually buckle up, meets the lower clog area, like showing my hands here, that top part hitting the bottom, I'll take a Dremel and grind a few millimetres away from that so the top calf can actually slide a little further down before it hits hard against the top like of your foot and gets a hard stop, like that's one thing I do. the whole shell actually kind of distorts a little bit. And even I found, you know, interesting thing is liners, I found a lot of tongues in ski boot liners, the intersection where your ankle flexes, that is actually, it's two things, it's quite stiff, but second it actually blocks up the ankle, so it would be something interesting maybe you could give me some feedback on, check it with kids as well, especially in kids boots. When the ankle flexes, it doesn't just hinge forward, it glides on top of like- so the tibia glides forward on the talus bone. And so if the tibia is sliding forward even a little bit, there's got to be some space for it to be able to move forward. And typically the stiff liner tongue folds up and actually pushes back into the joint and stops you right down at that pivot point.

And so cutting out more of the material that's across that intersection, like that's a huge one I've found that gives people better ankle flexibility. Yeah, I know I've been doing some reading on constraints based learning, which Sacha Ririk, guy, former US ski team coach, he put me on to, but anyway, a big thing they talk about in that approach to coaching is like going the wrong way, like doing things. So I think even if you do push someone too far forward, there's a huge learning experience in that, that like, oh, I've never felt that before, but at least you have like, you've got a reference point. You you would have felt it when you have a pair of skis that are tuned poorly or you have a pair of boots that are, you know, helps you really solidify what you like and what works even more so when when you you experience the range. So yeah, I think don't be afraid of, you know, oh, what if it pushed them too hard? Find that out.

Huge and I and I do this even when I don't have access to specific dry line training at lunchtime. I get teased for doing static demos, showing people how to do things at lunch. If you're gonna go out on snow, you know, you might do a lap through a terrain park, you know, which might have five jumps and a lap through a park might take you, you know, if you're off skiing with eight kids, that's gonna take you maybe half an hour.

So yeah, I think, you know, dry land gym training doesn't have to be, you know, it could be ten minutes at the end of your day, your indoor session.

Yeah, I think for your recreational skier, like someone who's super interested in it, to buy an ID1 specific mogul skier is $1,100 plus bindings. Some simple alternatives, I think often people think of a slalom ski because it's short. Especially if we're talking about the zipline bumps, the slalom ski has way too much radius. So you're gonna like hook up and shoot across the hill. So the best is an old giant slalom ski and so not a fish GS, like a recreational master's GS.

Yeah, guess to clarify we're talking a little bit more, you know, a bit more targeted towards sort of your zipper line mobiles, know, competition style mobiles. Yeah, but the ideal is to ski quite carved and direct, so you're not twisting the ski, you know, the hill. So, you know, the less you twist the ski, know, it's if you're just starting out and you have a lot of twists and a lot of pivot down the course, that's where, you know, a long ski is gonna, you're gonna find tricky. But yeah, as we get to the more advanced level and you're skiing a more straighter direct line, you know, it's more about like the skinniness of the ski. So you can roll from edge to edge really quickly.

Yeah, totally would agree. Would say, I'm just going add one more thing that resonated from a student I was coaching online this season who's really wanted to improve their bumps and he mentioned he was like, there's nothing- you have to spend more time on the bumps. It's just such an obvious thing, but I think if people are honest with themselves and think about how much time do I spend training groomer style skiing, short turns, long turns, so easy to rack up time there. But you probably see it too, so many people don't actually spend the same amount of hours, not even close to it, like two bump runs and like, oh, I'm done, instead of, you know, like fifteen, you know, mogul runs. Like, I think people just need to spend way more time in it with what you suggested, being athletic, not overthinking it like technique wise, just try and get your reactions and predictability of seeing certain shaped bumps and blah blah blah.

So my my piece of advice is be honest with yourself, start counting how many mogul runs you actually do if you go out training and compare with how many like paced type runs you would do and you wanna get closer towards like, how much you would you would spend there. There's no substitute for that for that.
