But you're here to tell us about yourself and maybe where you've been and what you're doing now.

So 2006 to 2010, I was in solar at that time actually, and the financial crisis threw that for a loop back in 08/00/2009.

I had gotten into building performance in 2010, and I think we met shortly after that.

The journey took me from building performance.

I actually was a BPI trainer for about a year traveling the state of California through a grant program.

And after that, found an opportunity to do testing back in Fresno, which is where I grew up.

So I was down in San Diego, made the difficult decision to move back to Fresno from San Diego, and founded Balanced Comfort in 2012.

And so Balanced Comfort started out as going out and doing energy audits for homes.

We were doing HERS two testing, which is unique to California, going in doing a blower door duct test, infrared camera, and then providing customers with a report based on what we found.

So we shifted the company over to doing mechanical and plumbing engineering for a while.

I found out how challenging that was going to be.

And then I started working with a local contractor who did air conditioning at the time and was able to influence them into getting into building performance.

Back then, was called the Energy Upgrade California program that had just gotten started.

And so I went in and said, look, I've got all these certifications that you need in order to work with this program.

Why don't we work together?

So they had an opportunity come up.

I went out, did the audit.

Speaker 2

The owner came to me and said, do you wanna go out and present this and offer these upgrades to the customer?

Speaker 2

So I went out and at the time, their average ticket was $7,500.

Went out, presented two duct systems, an AC unit, insulation, And I remember very clearly sitting at the kitchen table with them and them saying, yeah, let's go forward with this.

And so I walked in the office the next day and said, okay, let's go.

Speaker 2

And they were just blown away.

There's a huge opportunity here.

So that led to a relationship working with them for about five years.

During that time, started to get Balanced Comfort into insulation.

So we started installing insulation through Balance Comfort, and then eventually got my HVAC and general contractor's licenses, so for Balance Comfort.

I think I hear a common thread through all this.

I would love to say that I planned this all out.

One of my favorite things to do is surf.

I don't get to do that much in Fresno.

So that's essentially what I did.

I came into HVAC from a very nontypical path.

I was doing HERS ratings, and I'd go out and say, your subcooling is off.

Contractor would say, well, how do I fix it?

This is for you to fix.

So there was a huge learning curve for me.

You could go almost every day and learn something new about building science.

And so I was able to learn a tremendous amount about building science hands on from experts down there.

Those are opportunities that I wouldn't have had just about anywhere else.

So that was a huge advance in my career.

And so learning the basics down there, to your point, allowed me to look at things differently and approach HVAC from a different standpoint.

And all the while, it sounds like you were solo, and then you became an entrepreneur, and then hired people.

So back in 2010, we had started a company in San Diego, and we were doing a lot of the work ourselves, Hirsch ratings, BPI audits, stuff like that.

It's just at that time, the demand was three or four audits a day, and then it would be going back to process all of that data at night.

And so that was something that I had to adapt to in working with people to get as best information as I could working with them as possible.

And so we built a canvassing team to go door to door to offer what were fully subsidized, essentially free energy audits to customers.

And offering free energy audits is more challenging than it should be, because people think that there's some catch to it.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

I had come from the service industry.

And so customer service was very natural to me.

Management, leadership, those things had to be learned, and understanding how to get people to do what you really need them to do, not necessarily what they want to do, I would say, is still a challenge.

But you've paid attention to signals along the way, obviously, as you made these shifts.

Speaker 3

Can you think of anything specific that signaled you to look in a little different direction?

That's a great question.

I think the things that helped drive where I've ended up is just persistence and just continuing to get after it one way or another.

My connection to the contractor that I started working with in 2015 was out of I was going to the local business networking international, the BNI group here in town.

Speaker 2

And I happened to meet them through that and offered them HERS rating services, and they said no.

Speaker 2

So it was just seeing where the market might be going, but then at the same time, it wasn't waiting for things to happen.

What thought process brought you into balanced comfort, and what was the history behind that a little bit?

My goal had always been to identify what does something cost, what is gonna be the benefit, and really what makes sense for a homeowner.

It's not something that's easy to do because you want something that fits.
