Speaker 0

Do you know what it means to underestimate someone?

Speaker 0

It means you assume that they're less capable than they truly are.

Speaker 0

You sell them short by not realizing their actual abilities or intelligence or potential.

Speaker 0

In today's story, a larger animal underestimates a smaller one in a rather high flying way.

Speaker 0

I'm Rebecca Scheer, and welcome to Circle Round live at the DLF Halton Theater in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Speaker 0

Today, our story is called The Underestimated Beatle.

Speaker 0

It's inspired by tales from Brazil, the largest country in South America.

Speaker 0

Joining me on stage is a trio of talented actors, Frank Dominguez, Caroline Lee, and Phil Vavra.

Speaker 0

Providing musical accompaniment is the one and only Eric Schimelonis.

Speaker 0

So circle around everyone for the underestimated Beatle.

Speaker 0

Visit the lush rainforests of Brazil, and you may see a rather distinctive insect known as the imperial tortoise beetle.

Speaker 0

Now, all beetles have a hard protective shell, right?

Speaker 0

And the imperial tortoise beetle's shell

Speaker 1

Exoskeleton!

Speaker 1

What was that?

Speaker 1

My shell is actually called an exoskeleton.

Speaker 0

Exoskeleton, right.

Speaker 0

Thank you, imperial tortoise beetle.

Speaker 1

You can just call me beetle.

Speaker 1

Did I enter the story too early?

Speaker 0

Oh, no.

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

We were just getting to the part about what makes you so distinctive.

Speaker 0

You know, your My exoskeleton?

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

Exoskeleton.

Speaker 0

I will remember that.

Speaker 0

And, you know, it's really quite the sight.

Speaker 0

All shimmering gold and emerald green and sapphire blue.

Speaker 0

So bright and sparkly it looks like a precious jewel.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

But it didn't always look this way.

Speaker 2

And that's the tale we're about to tell.

Speaker 2

Are you ready?

Speaker 2

To tell the tale of my exoskeleton?

Speaker 2

I'm always ready to tell the tale of my exoskeleton.

Speaker 1

Though now that I think of it, exoskeleton doesn't exactly roll off the hypopharynx.

Speaker 0

Roll off the what?

Speaker 1

The tongue.

Speaker 1

An insect's tongue is called a hypopharynx.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

So since exoskeleton is kind of unwieldy, let's just

Speaker 0

say shell.

Speaker 0

Works for me.

Speaker 0

So long, long ago, back when the world was ruled by animals, beetle's shell was brown.

Speaker 0

Dull, drab, brown.

Speaker 0

Beetle didn't mind her plain hue.

Speaker 0

Yet every now and again, she would look at the other animals in the rainforest and feel a sense of yearning.

Speaker 1

Oh, if only I had bright colors like toucan with her orange and yellow beak or scarlet macaw with feathers as red as the sun.

Speaker 1

And while poison dart frog may be extremely well poisonous, his bright blue spots are incredible.

Speaker 0

The animal whose colors beetle admired most was parrot.

Speaker 1

Could parrot's plumage be any more stunning?

Speaker 1

His feathers are shimmering gold and emerald green and sapphire blue.

Speaker 1

So bright and sparkly, look like precious jewels.

Speaker 1

But why yearn for something I'll never have?

Speaker 0

One day, Beetle decided to explore a new part of the rainforest.

Speaker 0

She was crawling beside a winding stream, heading toward a great big Brazil nut tree, when all of a sudden

Speaker 3

Well, well, well, what do we have here?

Speaker 0

Beetle looked up, crouched beneath the tree, cracking Brazil nuts with a mouthful of sharp teeth, was an animal she had never seen before.

Speaker 0

He was brown and furry with long whiskers, thin legs, and a prominent rump.

Speaker 0

He looked to be some sort of rodent, like a cross between a squirrel and a guinea pig?

Speaker 3

I've gotta say, I've never seen anything like you, little one.

Speaker 3

When I spied you inching this way, and I do mean inching, You were crawling so slowly, I thought you were snail.

Speaker 3

But snail is a sprinter compared to you.

Speaker 3

If he challenged you to a race, you would be eating his dust or his trail of slime.

Speaker 1

Mucus.

Speaker 1

什么?

What?

Speaker 1

That slime is called mucus.

Speaker 1

A complex watery gel made of proteins and mucopolysaccharides.

Speaker 3

Made of what?

Speaker 1

算了。

Never mind.

Speaker 1

Look, my name is Beetle.

Speaker 1

I don't usually visit this part of the forest.

Speaker 1

And for your information, I'm not that slow.

Speaker 1

I move quickly enough.

Speaker 3

Do you though?

Speaker 3

I mean, I know we just met, but something tells me that when you started your journey to this part of the forest, this Brazil nut tree was still a sapling, if not a seed.

Speaker 0

Beetle cringed.

Speaker 0

Thanks to this rude rodent, her blood was beginning to boil.

Speaker 0

Hemolymph.

Speaker 0

什么?

What?

Speaker 0

Beetles don't have blood.

Speaker 0

We have hemolymph.

Speaker 4

Oh, okay.

Speaker 0

Her hemolymph was beginning to boil.

Speaker 1

Look, mister.

Speaker 1

I have had it with your insults.

Speaker 1

Who are you anyway?

Speaker 0

The rodent puffed out his furry chest.

Speaker 3

Agouti is my name and speed is my game.

Speaker 3

Don't let my appearance fool you.

Speaker 3

I may have skinny legs and a plump rump, but I can run faster than a rabbit.

Speaker 0

Beetle began to wonder which was greater, Agouti's speed or his smugness?

Speaker 0

You may be fast, Agouti, but if I need

Speaker 1

to get somewhere quickly, I always find a way.

Speaker 3

Get somewhere quickly, you?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

I can move fast if I have to.

Speaker 3

Really?

Speaker 3

Okay.

Speaker 3

Then how about you prove it and put your money where your mouth is?

Speaker 1

You mean my mandibles, maxillae, labium, and labrum?

Speaker 3

Your what?

Speaker 3

Your what?

Speaker 2

I don't actually have a mouth.

Speaker 1

As an insect, I have mandibles, maxillae, a labrum.

Speaker 3

Whatever.

Speaker 3

The point is I challenge you to a race through the rainforest.

Speaker 0

Beetle blinked her eyes.

Speaker 0

You want me to race you?

Speaker 3

Yeah.

Speaker 3

That is unless you're too scared.

Speaker 3

Do you have butterflies in your tummy?

Speaker 1

Abdomen.

Speaker 1

什么?

What?

Speaker 1

My tummy is called an abdomen.

Speaker 1

And no, I'm not scared.

Speaker 3

Great.

Speaker 3

Then let's talk about prizes.

Speaker 3

The winner of the race has got to receive a prize.

Speaker 4

Is that so?

Speaker 0

Agouti and beetle glanced up, and there, fluttering down from the top of the Brazil nut tree was Parrot.

Speaker 0

The dappled light streaming through the branches made his gold, green, and blue feathers sparkle.

Speaker 4

I believe I heard that you two are holding a race.

Speaker 3

You bet we are,

Speaker 1

parrot.

Speaker 1

Agouti wants to see which one of us is faster.

Speaker 3

Oh, I know which one of us is faster.

Speaker 3

I just wanna watch you chew on my fumes with your mannequins, maximums, laboratories, and libraries.

Speaker 1

You mean my mandibles, maxillae, labium, and labrum?

Speaker 3

Whatever.

Speaker 4

Well, if you two really are holding a race, then a goodie is right.

Speaker 4

The winner should receive a prize, and I would like to offer one.

Speaker 1

That isn't necessary, Parrot.

Speaker 3

Oh, yes, it is.

Speaker 3

Tell us about the prize.

Speaker 3

I bet it's a really fancy item.

Speaker 0

Parrot cocked his head.

Speaker 4

The prize isn't so much an item as a choice.

Speaker 4

A choice?

Speaker 4

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 4

Whoever wins the race shall get to make a choice, a very special choice.

Speaker 4

And once you make it, trust me, things will never look the same.

Speaker 0

Happens after a quick break.

Speaker 0

Today, our story is called The Underestimated Beatle.

Speaker 0

Before the break, quick and agile Agouti made the acquaintance of little brown beetle.

Speaker 0

Seeing how slowly beetle crawled, the speedy rodent challenged the insect to a race.

Speaker 0

Parrot overheard the conversation and offered the winner a prize.

Speaker 4

Whoever reaches the finish line first may choose a new coat of any color.

Speaker 4

Tell me what you wish, and I'll have it made to order.

Speaker 0

Agouti's whiskered face lit up.

Speaker 3

What a cool prize.

Speaker 3

I love how fast I am, but I've never been a fan of my coat.

Speaker 3

It's all brown and boring.

Speaker 3

I want a coat like jaguars with its yellow fur and black spots.

Speaker 1

I don't mind being plain brown, but I do like the idea of a bright beautiful coat or shell.

Speaker 0

Parrot stuck out his beak and marked a line in the dirt.

Speaker 4

This is the starting line right here in front of the Brazil nut tree.

Speaker 4

When I say go, the two of you shall take off from this line and race through the forest.

Speaker 4

You shall follow the winding stream until it empties into the river.

Speaker 4

And whoever reaches that spot first is the winner.

Speaker 0

Beetle and Agouti got into position.

Speaker 0

Parrot stretched his gold, green, and blue wings out to either side.

Speaker 4

All right, racers.

Speaker 4

On your mark, get set, go.

Speaker 0

The moment Parrot brought his wings down, Agouti took off like a shot.

Speaker 3

Woo hoo, here I go.

Speaker 0

The round, rumped, fleet footed rodent ran faster than he ever had before.

Speaker 0

He blazed past glossy leafed mahogany trees.

Speaker 3

I'm blazing.

Speaker 3

I'm blazing.

Speaker 0

And bolted through thickets of ferns.

Speaker 3

I'm bolting.

Speaker 3

I'm bolting.

Speaker 0

He hurdled over moss covered rocks.

Speaker 3

I'm hurdling.

Speaker 3

I'm hurdling.

Speaker 0

And hustled under clinging vines.

Speaker 3

I'm hustling.

Speaker 3

I'm hustling.

Speaker 0

The terrain was tough and his feet were burning, but Agouti was determined to walk away with that brand new coat.

Speaker 3

Don't you mean run away?

Speaker 3

Check out this speed.

Speaker 0

At last, Agouti came to the place where the stream met the river and where Parrot was waiting.

Speaker 0

Welcome

Speaker 2

to the finish line, Agouti.

Speaker 1

Yes, welcome.

Speaker 0

Agouti's mouth dropped open because Parrot was not alone.

Speaker 0

Standing by his side was Beetle.

Speaker 3

What is going on here?

Speaker 3

How did you manage to beat me, Beetle?

Speaker 3

I ran that race like my rump was on fire.

Speaker 1

I know you did.

Speaker 1

But that's the thing.

Speaker 1

I didn't run.

Speaker 3

Well, you didn't exactly crawl if you finished the race before I did.

Speaker 1

I didn't crawl either.

Speaker 1

Instead, I used these.

Speaker 0

She gave her brown body a wiggle, and just like that, out from her sides popped two tiny wings.

Speaker 0

Nobody ever said anything about having to run the race, Agouti, so I flew.

Speaker 0

She beat her wings and lifted into the air.

Speaker 0

Agouti's eyes went wide as saucers.

Speaker 3

You can fly?

Speaker 3

I didn't know you could fly.

Speaker 1

There's a lot you don't know about me, Agouti.

Speaker 1

Isn't that right, Parrot?

Speaker 4

It sure is.

Speaker 4

Agouti, when you saw this little creature crawling around, you made a big assumption.

Speaker 4

You assumed she was slow.

Speaker 4

You assumed she would be eating snail's dust.

Speaker 4

Or mucus.

Speaker 4

The point is, you judged her only by what you observed in that moment.

Speaker 4

Therefore, you underestimated her.

Speaker 3

I under what or what?

Speaker 3

我们

We

Speaker 0

explained it at the start of the story.

Speaker 0

It means you assumed that she was less capable than she truly is.

Speaker 4

Exactly.

Speaker 4

But here's the thing, Agouti.

Speaker 2

If you take the time to get

Speaker 4

to know someone, you'll learn what they're really like.

Speaker 4

You'll learn about their abilities, their assets, the things that make them tick or fly.

Speaker 4

If you don't take that time, you're just judging a book by its cover.

Speaker 4

And now, Beetle's cover is about to look a whole lot different.

Speaker 0

Parrot gazed over at Beetle.

Speaker 4

Tell me, Beetle, what kind of coat or shell would you like?

Speaker 1

In truth, I'd like to look like you, Parrot.

Speaker 1

All shimmering gold and emerald green and sapphire blue, so bright and sparkly I look like a jewel.

Speaker 4

很好。

Very well.

Speaker 4

Consider your wish granted.

Speaker 4

And Agouti, consider your lesson learned.
