New Mobility is a wonderful magazine that we often rely on for disability news.

The first story in New Mobility is called Blood Clots and What to Watch For. This article came out on 08/18/2025 and was written by Tim Gilmer. Here's the story. Thirty years after Arwin Byrd was rear ended with Anne paralyzed by speeding drunk driver, she started hearing ringing sounds in her head. Aside to have an imaging done because I wanted to understand what caused the ringing in particular why I was hearing my heartbeat at the same time, says Bird, now at T.

A. Peril. CT imaging showed both cartoid arteries had artery budges which can cause ringing in the ears, also known as tinnitus. Her doctor theorized that this in her neck were likely due to the C seven T1 dislocation she sustained in addition to the T6, the T8 burst fracture. Decided it was best to repeat imaging at least every three years to guard against unexpected clotting or artery bleeding or rupturing, any which could cause serious damage or even death.

He also prescribed a daily low dose of baby aspirin to lessen the risk. While clotting can be dangerous at a deeper level, this story is also about the health of arteries, the most invisible freeway system that carries life giving blood to every part of the body. With traumatic spinal cord injury, the danger of clotting especially in the lower extremities begins immediately. Doctor. Joseph Schwatzel is a hematologist and scientific researcher at Ocean Health and Science University who has won multiple teaching awards and has published numerous research papers and book chapters on such topics.

Among his colleagues his expertise has earned him the nickname Doctor. Clot and on Twitter X he goes by clotmaster. He says the greatest risk of clotting for an individual with SCI comes immediately following the injury. When someone is just injured, probably during the first three months, they are at a very high risk for blood clots that occur in the veins of the legs, he says. Sometimes they can migrate into the lungs.

A clot in the lungs is known as a pulmonary embolism. Embolisms and blood thinners. I don't have to look far to find someone in our community who has a personal experience with early clotting and a life threatening pulmonary embolism. Bob Vogel, is 65, who I've worked with at New Mobility for the last twenty five years, developed a dangerous clot after a 1985 skiing accident that broke four ribs and crushed his T-eleven and T-twelve vertebrae. It was a massive trauma, says Vogel.

They did a spinal fusion and installed Harrington rods within a week. About two weeks after that I was just lying there very doped up and still groggy talking to my dad. And I just mentioned a sharp pain. Not all that bad. Whenever I breathed in, a nurse came in and listened to him breathe through a stethoscope, followed by a doctor who did the same.

The next thing I know, I am being wheeled down a hallway for emergency operation. They found a pulmonary embolism in his right lung and traced the origin to his right thigh. Vogue was put on Lovenox and I could take it right away and then a different one for another six months until clots in his lungs and right thigh dissolved. I was good to go, says Voe. Then in 2,007 he flipped forward out of his chair and broke his right femur near where he had the clot in his thigh.

He and his doctors noticed the swelling wasn't going down after the fracture. An ultrasound showed another clot had formed. So once again doctors put him on Lovenox. After six months later, a follow-up showed that the clot in his thigh had not completely dissolved but the blood flow had found a way around it. Nonetheless, with his doctor's approval, Vogtle decided to stay on it indefinitely.

Doctors told me once you've had a clot, your chances of having another certainly increase. Finally in 2018, after not having clots for more than ten years, he decided it was safe to discontinue blood thinners. He only had clotting problems following traumatic injuries. He remains vigilant, keeping close, watch on any possible swelling. He also has written down his history of clotting and taking blood thinners and keeps a copy of it in his wallet in case it is ever needed.

Knock on wood, he says. No problem since then. The 2015 study conducted at the National Spinal Injury Center at Stroke and Mannville Hospital in The United Kingdom found that even though blood thinners are routinely prescribed in the first ninety day period of SCI, the rate of PE does range from five to twelve percent. On other hand, the incidence of PE was only one point two five percent in patients who were more than ninety days post SCI and no longer taking blood thinners. The takeaway is clear.

The chances of getting a clot following onset of SCI is the highest during the first few months even with blood thinners but it drops off rapidly after that. In the general population the rate of PE is zero point zero six percent per year. It should be noted that the first three months following SCI are the period of greatest downtime in bed and the least activity which makes clotting more likely. There is also a higher rate of clotting with quads but is not all that different for those with thorax and or lumbar injuries. Everyone is at risk but the risk is relatively small and blood thinners are always an option to reduce the risk significantly.

There is a reoccurring danger. Teal Sheer, another New Mexico associate was injured at L2 in a 1995 car accident in Knoxville, Tennessee. A few weeks after lengthy hospital and rehab stays, she was back in school as a 14 year old freshman when a blood clot came out of the blue. I woke up one morning and my left leg was swollen. She says, we've been warned of blood clot danger.

So right away, I knew what was happening. She went to the hospital and thinks she was given a blood fender and sent home after several days. She's still foggy on the details but I remember when I was discharged I was definitely not on a blood thinner or at least not for that long, she says. She stayed active walking around the house with long leg braces, moving her legs, swimming in outpatient rehab. It was all good.

No more blood clots. Fast forward to 2014, married and pregnant. Her maternal fetal doc put her on a low dose. Lovenox twice daily because she was at a higher risk of forming new clots because of her blood clot history. He told me, you had a clot before.

Now you're pregnant for the first time. Let's just do this and be safe, she says. A year after giving birth to her son River, she fell out of her chair and broke an ankle. Two weeks later she got another blood clot on her left leg. Clots are more likely to inform after a traumatic accident.

I had to go to the ER with a swollen leg then was sent home with blood thinners, she says. After this, I found out I had a compressed vein in my left hip known as May Thurner syndrome which is more common in women who have given birth, says Cher. MTS restricts return blood flow and it's fairly common in women who are 20 to 40 years old who have a blood clot history. After moving to Seattle to be safe, she sought out a vascular doctor decided to put a stent in her compressed vein and open it. The stent did actually collapse and it restricted her, but it's all good now.

I have to wear a compressive socks and I take another blood thinner, she says. Because of my history, I'm on top of my health now. I have my doctors and I see them regular. I'm aware of potential problems even when doctors sometimes aren't. They should have put me on blood thinners when I broke my ankle.

Now I know so I'm thinking about being proactive. So what are the cartoids arteries? If you have a chronicle SCI and wonder if your cartoid arteries might have been damaged from a traumatic accident like bird you can always request a cartoid artery ultra scan. It's a common non invasive preventive procedure that can easily be arranged. If the ultrasound studies find you are at risk from artery damage or narrowing from plaque buildup, Chances are that they are stenting on a routine procedure to remove plaque can be done.

If an aneurysm is discovered, further testing will be done to assess the degree of risk and whether it is best to operate. Sometimes the best option is just to do nothing, possibly taking a daily baby aspirin or some other blood thinner. How many of us might be at risk of an artery problem? In the case of car crashes, the percentage of SCI cases with cartoid artery damage is not known. But assuming it mirrors data of the mainstream population, it could be the one percent to two percent range.

On the other hand, since traumatic vacuolar accidents are all leading causes of SCI, percentage could very well be higher. No matter the cause or incidence, it is important for the SCI survivors to be aware of the potential artery damage from clots or narrowing and taking preventive actions if necessary. This article came out on 09/11/2025 and was written by C. Von Lemarie. Before I arrived in Des Moines, I assumed that Iowa was all that about corn. After all, Iowa is the number one corn producing state in The United States and it's nicknamed the tall corn state. So perhaps it was more than a coincidence that I visited on the same spring weekend as the annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival.

The the whole experience was symbolic of the way to this moist. Fantastic and unpleasantly surprised. City does offer great levels of wheelchair accessibility and plenty of interesting accessible things to do. Beyond the bacon, I found a city brimming with charm, accessibility, and a wide range of things to do.

I've been over a dozen state capitals, and this is by far my favorite. Filled with locally sell sourced wood, beautiful murals, and marble and gold leaf to spare. It's the only state capital of five domes.

Don't skip the gorgeous library. If you don't get your fill of Iowa history at the capital, you can roll just a couple blocks to Iowa State Historical Society. Displays were very well done, and accessibility was excellent. My favorite area focused on the history of moviemaking in Iowa, including Field Of Dreams and the importance of Iowa in The United States political system, especially as a society, the country's first presidential primary each election season. Also, no idea that Iowa has such a rich rich bicycling history.

Rutgers Angley Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa is the world's oldest, largest, and longest recreational bike touring event and hand cyclists have completed the tour in years past. Since you're already in the East Village area of Downtown Des Moines, why not do some shopping to support local small businesses? This area is packed with fun and interesting shops and restaurants. My favorite store is a t shirt shop called Ragoon with thousands of t shirts featuring any and every quote or anything you could possibly imagine, organized into sections with themes like sports and politics. You're bound to find something or you can head upstairs and make your own.

The owner's grandfather was an animator for Popeyes cartoons, and you've seen some nods to that on the walls. You have some energy left for the late night entertainment.

It's a relaxing oasis when you need a break from the city. It's much smaller than many other botanical gardens I visited, but packs a lot into the middle of a urban space.

I love that you can see the river in the downtown skyline from a large terrace adjacent to the Guardian Gardens. You can explore tropical plants in a warm and humid dome. Marvel at the beautiful tulips in the spring along the many carefully manicured and accessible outdoor pathways. My favorite feature is a waterfall that you can row underneath in your wheelchair. Ask for extra medication refills so that you have emergencies apply on hand and discuss how to manage possible treatment disruptions. If you depend on electricity, whether for powered school orders or oxygen or refrigerated medications, contact your power company before disaster strikes.

If your disability affects how quickly or safely you can evacuate, consider leaving before an order is issued. Because Mr. Deal knows that gathering and loading his supplies into the car could take precious time in emergency, keeps them ready to go.

For many home and community based care is the difference between living in an institution and a life comparable to peers who don't have a disability. In Kentucky, Boone Stroeder, who's four, has a condition that caused severe skin wounds. A waiver program covers infection preventing supplies that private insurance does not plus physical and occupational therapy. Ion Aldabot, an eight year old in Pennsylvania who uses a feeding tube and a catheter because of a meth metal cold, dry disease, cannot go to school when one of his nurses is sick or unavailable. And nine year old Spencer Everett, who has a gastric tube and a certain other conditions, has been in regular public school classroom since kindergarten, thanks to the help of miss Chandra, who worked with him in addition to June.

Cuts may affect her work, but for her, it's personal too.

However, since COVID, nearly all high street banks have withdrawn the service citing costs and complex compliance laws. In recent weeks, Nationwide Building Society became the latest provider to pull out of the market. Closures have removed a lifeline from learning impaired people who are already financially excluded, according to the charity MEN CAP, which warns that ordinary counts may put them at risk of financial abuse.

Nationwide had written to say it intended to close this account and required the original trust document that the MHRC registration she said. Meanwhile, without warning, it put a security block on the account.

We accept we could have been clearer that restrictions could be placed on these accounts and that there had been made delays in resolving the issues with some customers when they had supplied us information for review. Exodus from the trust market has left few options for families wanting to secure the financial future of adult dependence. Metro is the only high street bank that still offers a service, although accounts holding less than £25,000 incur a £5 a month fee.

Artisan filmmaker Andrew Coding returns to the themes of conscientious and memory, both individual and collective, in his playful doc essay in which he is again working with his daughter, Eden, she is at once his subject and his collaborator. Eden was born in 1988 with the genetic disorder Joubert syndrome. She draws and paints and often appears in Coding's films. I have in the past wondered aloud if Coding might tackle the challenges of being with Eden more straightforwardly.

It could be that it is only this complex, layered, tonally, elusive approach which refuses the conventional grammar of clinical concern, does justice to the idea of seeing the world as Eden sees it. She is in a group alongside other adults and learning development issues, and on the shop floor of a factory where they are pretending that they are producing memory blocks with machine tools and three d printers hollowed out metal blocks which are containers or constituent elements of memory. They participate in the fiction that these blocks will stimulate consciousness and send them back in time to happy memories.

If the political and media class advocates policies that leave disabled people hungry and dirty, the disabled community must explain why we should be allowed to eat and be clean.

I've seen chronically ill people make reels on social media listings for strangers. They intimidate ideas that need disability benefits to pay for.

Disabled people have to prove our humanity on repeat, sharing even more intimate details of our life and bodies to prove otherwise worthy, not least of taxpayer money. Each time it happens, I can feel myself shrink and shift a little more. It's ironic or telling that the degradation reminds me of disability benefits assessment.
