Hi. Welcome back to Eat Your Crest podcast. I'm Jisoo.

Speaker 1

我是Crystal。我是Katie。

I'm Crystal. I'm Katie.

Speaker 2

我是Jimin。

And I'm Jimin.

Speaker 1

So the last time that we had Geminon, talked about fantasy sports. And actually, this time we'll be continuing that conversation with Katie as an added guest because we had a very fun activity. We all partook in slash spectated, which is the loser punishment for fantasy football. Jisoo, Katie, and I are in one league, and Jimin is in another league. And it just so happens that both of our leagues had the same punishment this year, which is the nine ninety nine challenge.

Speaker 1

We had the pleasure, I guess, of watching it happen two times within two months. We thought it would be fun to bring Katie and Jimin on to talk about their experience doing the challenge, some strategies they might have picked up, and maybe tips for anyone who ends up having to do this challenge in the future. So to start us off, let's talk about what nine ninety nine exactly is.

Speaker 2

So three nines basically mean nine beers, nine hot dogs in the span of nine innings or, like, a standard baseball game. The idea is the loser has to consume all 18 items by the end of the game. By the strict rules of nine nine nine, it's usually one beer and one hot dog every inning. However, I think there's been variations where it basically boils down to just finishing it all by the end of the game. I think it's you know, it really picked up some steam a couple years ago, and then and an added twist that we might talk about later, right, is the with tweaks to the MLB rules that has made this challenge maybe a lot harder than it originally intended to be.

Speaker 0

Can you elaborate on that, Jimin? I have heard of what the changes are and how baseball, especially in terms of, like, duration of the game, looks a lot different from when we were younger versus now. But what are some of the changes that you think impact September?

Speaker 2

The big one was, like, the added the pitch clock. Right? So I think in the past, games used to just run super, super long, like, three plus hours, four hours even. And so I think in an attempt to maybe keep the viewers more engaged, they added this pitch clock, which sort of, you know, speeds up the pitching and in a sense makes the innings go faster. I don't really follow baseball all that much, but, you know, some of the sporting apps, they'll have these, you know, highlights or news or something.

Speaker 2

And so when the nine nine nine was implemented as, like, the punishment, maybe a few weeks later, I got this notification where people were sort of blown away that a baseball game ended in under two hours. And so, you know, you sort of see that. You're like, oh, shoot. We gotta eat all these things in potentially under two hours. You have to keep this time thing in consideration now.

Speaker 2

And another thing which happened, I think, for for mine, but not for Katie's, was that some stadiums implement sort of a we stop serving food and or alcohol after, like, the seventh inning. So now you have to think about stockpiling your stuff ahead of time if you need to. So that'll involve, like, you know, scouting some of your stadium logistics and planning ahead.

Speaker 0

I also wonder if you wanna be strategic about the teams that you pick because I remember for Jim and your game, the game was really short. I remember it was maybe, like, two hours and fifteen minutes or something. Then for Katie's, it was slightly longer. And I was like, damn, Katie did a good job picking the teams to maybe go for a longer game or something like that. And then the other thing that I thought was great and strategic for Katie's was morning of nine ninety nine, Katie and Avi woke up and cooked, I wanna say like 80 hot dogs or something.

Speaker 0

Katie,

So Katie, do you wanna talk about like what went on behind that decision?

Speaker 3

So actually we were looking at the games and we mainly chose that one because it worked at the timing and it was the cheapest tickets. So we were like seeing like which game would be cheaper tickets so we can all just get tickets together and it would be easy. For the hot dogs, yeah, I guess since a lot of people in our league wanted to participate as well, we looked into buying a ton of hot dogs so we could all do it. So we won't have to, like, pay I don't know how much it is because we didn't have to buy any per hot dog. So we bought, like, 72 hot dogs from Costco and, like, a bunch of buns a couple days before.

Speaker 3

Honestly, when we're cooking it, I was like, wow, this smells really good. I could really go for a hot dog. And I think Jimmy was like, should we eat one? Should we eat one? And then and then we're like, no, Jimmy.

Speaker 3

Like, every bit counts when we're doing it. We're gonna really regret it if we eat it. Luckily for us, like Yankee Stadium, they allow you to bring in food. So yeah. And it was pretty easy for all of us to bring in the hot dogs.

Speaker 3

So that was great.

Speaker 1

Oh my god. It was such a crazy thing. Was it, like, a total of maybe 10 to 12 people attended the game as, like, our friend group, and we each held a bag of seven to eight hot dogs just, like, with us. And we walked through security. No one even batted an eye.

Speaker 1

But I remember when we all got off

Speaker 0

the subway station, we were each handed that gallon sized ziplock of hot dogs and the plan was like, okay guys, split up.

Speaker 1

We don't know how strict they're gonna be here. Might be sus if we walk in with like 80 hot dogs, everyone go to a different entrance. And my heart was like pounding as we walked through the metal detector thing, and they were like peering through our bags. And it was a little bit more okay for me because I had like a handbag, so the ziplock is less obvious, but James didn't bring anything so he was just like walking through clutching that bag of hot dogs and I was like, we're

Speaker 0

gonna get in trouble. But it was all fine. Most of the hot dogs were consumed actually.

Speaker 1

Yeah I thought it was really fun that everyone wanted to participate and try along with Katie. But the funny thing is, I told one of my friends that, who's not in our league, and they were like, what's the point of the punishment? They're like, if everyone's doing it, is that even a punishment?

Speaker 3

Yeah, I mean, I feel like it was really fun that we all got to do it together, and I think it kind of boils down to like why fantasy is so fun because it's really like every week you kind of get to spend time with your friends online or like everyone's watching the games together. It's like a common thing that you guys bond over. So yeah, I thought that was really fun that everybody participated with me and I was really happy about that.

Speaker 1

Yeah. I was honestly very wholesome of everyone to be like, let's do it.

Speaker 2

I think somehow James signed me up without notifying me. Crystal's like, yeah. You're on the roster for it. I was I was like, okay. I guess we're doing it again.

Speaker 1

I'm like, yeah. They're making our hot dogs right now.

Speaker 2

So James is also in the other league that I'm in for this punishment. So we we both did it, and then we reported our numbers back to that group chat. And the general response from them was like, wait. You did this again, like, for fun? Or she's I was like, James and I are just like, yeah.

Speaker 0

There's two types of leagues. There's two types.

Speaker 1

Yeah. I remember because Katie and Abi were getting the hot dog count. They're like, alright. Who's, you know, doing this challenge? And then James just volunteered Jimin and I was like he I he said something like, oh, Jimin said he's down to try again.

Speaker 1

And I looked at that message and I was like, did Jimin say this?

Speaker 3

When I was talking to James, he was like, yeah, Jimin wants to try again because, you know, at the end of the other one, I feel like he could have done more. So I think he wants to try to finish. I was like, okay. Cool.

Speaker 0

Jimin

Jimin's like, this is news to me, but I'm down. Yeah.

Speaker 1

I will say, so we bought tickets so that we were all seated in like one long row together. And it was so funny because I was sort of on like the edge of the row. Every like ten minutes, I would look down to see how everyone was doing. And every time I looked down the row, people had like a hotdog in their hand, like a beer in their hand, were like staring off into the distance visibly in pain. I was

Speaker 0

like, dude, I can't believe this

Speaker 1

is what we're all doing on like a Saturday morning.

Speaker 0

But another thing that I thought was really smart about bringing our own hot dogs in was that you can actually standardize the size of the hot dogs. Because a couple months prior to this, had gone to a baseball game in San Francisco and I was staring at someone eating a hot dog because that thing was huge. It must have been, I don't know, like a 10 inch hot dog.

Speaker 3

Oh my god.

Speaker 1

I was like, how are Katie and Jimin gonna eat nine of these things?

Speaker 0

But I think the hot dogs that you can make from home tend to be kind of smaller. They're not like stadium sized. So I thought that was super smart. The other thing that I think is interesting is the size of the beers. One beer in our league with Katie and Crystal, we standardized to like the 330 mil can.

Speaker 0

So for example, if you go to the stadium and they only sell the big beers, you can kind of prorate them to the count of like the small can. But I

Speaker 1

think for Jimin's League, they were a little bit more strict. So they did it by unit count.

Speaker 0

The beers weren't prorated, which is a little crazy.

Speaker 2

Yeah. Shout out those assholes. I was like, it's like, can one of these tall boys count as two? And then one guy was just like, yeah. If you drink two of them.

Speaker 1

Which is also crazy because no one in that league could do nine nine nine, and they're so strict about it.

Speaker 3

Wait. So did you end up drinking, like, the tall boys? Or

Speaker 2

So what we tried to do since for mine, we didn't premake or anything. So we ended up going sort of right around when the gates open to look for the smallest possible cans and most reasonable sized hot dogs. I think we found 16 or 18 ounce cans were probably the smallest ones they had, and so we tried to just drink those versus, like, a 24 ounce. Like Jisoo said, there were several different sizes of hot dogs, so we just went for sort of the more reasonable sized ones compared to, like, these foot long 10 inch ones that yeah.

Speaker 1

We found some that were kid sized or labeled as kid sized.

Speaker 2

Yeah. They were labeled, but they were the same size as standard ones. So

Speaker 1

Yeah. When we opened them, we're like, this looks like a normal hot dog. I remember because Jisoo, me, Jimin, and James got there a little bit early, and we were scouting as Jimin said. Once we found those, like, kid hotdogs, we're like, alright. Don't let anyone else buy these hotdogs.

Speaker 1

Only send one of us four

Speaker 0

to buy these hot dogs

Speaker 1

because who knows what anyone else would buy. So we had certain strategies like that. I think someone offered to buy a beer for Jimin, and we're like, alright. Get this one. The Mikkelov Ultra slightly smaller can.

Speaker 1

And they're like, no. I'm gonna get him the biggest can. And we're like, wait. Fuck. We can't let anyone buy him beers anymore.

Speaker 3

That's evil. And they didn't even do it with you.

Speaker 2

Big friends, all of them.

Speaker 0

Yeah. I think Crystal, me, and James did end up shuttling like a decent amount of the hot dogs and beers, which is a great strategy because we also had the three of us to kind of rotate through. So then there was a constant stream of hot dogs and beers coming. But I wanna talk about other strategies. I think in the beginning, Jimin said that the classic form of doing nine ninety nine is to always do the one dog, one beer per inning.

Speaker 0

But are there any other strategies that you guys try to do to kind of keep pace or make sure that your stomachs are feeling okay throughout the game?

Speaker 2

I opted to eat as much as I can first just because I think me personally, I don't like to or nor can I drink, like, an excessive amount and still be okay? So my goal was just like, alright. I need to hit at least nine of one of the two. So I think I could eat a lot. So I think, okay.

Speaker 2

I can eat nine hot dogs pretty easily. So I'm just gonna try to hit nine there and then do as much as I possibly can with the beers afterward. For mine, we got there pretty early, loaded up, you know, got, like, three hot dogs and one beer. Just sat there waiting for the first pitch to go off. And once the first pitch went off, I just shoved all three, like, into my mouth and just tried to finish as quickly as possible.

Speaker 2

Just was trying to wash it down with the beer over time too. So I'd go in, like, sprints basically of, like, three hot dogs at a time. So whenever someone's like, oh, I'm gonna go up, I was like, can you grab me three? Come back to three. And I just sit there and, like, stare for two seconds and then just keep going.

Speaker 2

So that was basically my my approach was I I wanna get at least nine of one down. I knew I could probably pack the nine hot dogs in before I packed in nine beers.

Speaker 3

Going in, I think my strategy was that I could also maybe do, like, a couple of each and then slowly like progress. So I was like thinking, okay, maybe I'll do three hot dogs and I'll do like a couple beers and then I'll do some more hot dogs and like some more beers. But I think as I was doing it, after I ate two hot dogs and started drinking, I was thinking that if I ate another hot dog, like I don't know if I could drink anymore. So I think when it actually went down, we started walking around like me and Melissa, And I think that helped a lot. And then that kind of unlocked this new strategy.

Speaker 3

Was like, oh, I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna walk around and like do laps. And I think that actually helped a lot. So I think I did two hot dogs and then I did all the beers for the last two beers. It was pretty tough, but after I finished it, was like, okay, then I'll just like do as many hot dogs as I could. Because I was getting like pretty close to the beer.

Speaker 3

So was like, okay, let me just like finish the beers and then we'll see what we can do with the hot dogs. So yeah, the walking around helped a ton. I think that's how I was mostly able to finish most of the beers.

Speaker 2

That's a good point. I didn't walk around. I feel like I should have moved around more, but our tickets, I think, weren't as optimal as as as the Yankee's ones. We were kinda stuck, I think, in the middle of a section, so it was hard harder to move around. But I did end up walking a little bit at the end, and it it did help.

Speaker 2

I I think by the end of this episode, we'll find that Katie did have the superior strategy.

Speaker 1

Also, I feel like for the game that we did in SF, the sun was, like, beating down on us, which I don't know about you guys, but when I'm too hot, I don't wanna eat. Mhmm. So I feel like walking, you're, like, in the shade. It's hopefully a little cooler. Probably also helped in that factor.

Speaker 1

Because our New York game was it wasn't super sunny, but it was still really hot. Mhmm. It was, like, kinda muggy.

Speaker 3

Yeah. It was super humid that day. Remember the walking around helped a lot. That was not my strategy going in at all, but then Melissa was like, should walk around. I was like, wait.

Speaker 3

That's such a that's genius.

Speaker 1

It was so funny though, because I would

Speaker 0

like do my rose scans and I would always be like, dude, where's Katie? Like, I

Speaker 1

haven't seen her since the second inning. Wait. Yeah. When you reappeared and you're like, yeah, my count is like six beers. We're like, Where have you been?

Speaker 1

Who witnessed the beers?

Speaker 3

I was like I was like, don't tell them. Don't tell them our strategy. We must win. We need our edge. Keep walking, keep walking.

Speaker 3

And it was so funny because we're like, okay, let's find the ramp so we don't have to go down the stairs because the ramp is perfect because you can just kind of like saunter up and down. So we ended up finding this ramp that was closest to our section and we're just going up and down and it was great. It worked.

Speaker 0

Okay. I have like a question for you guys that I think was kind of debated during the two nine ninety nine's. So obviously, as you're consuming all these hot dogs, every square millimeter of stomach space counts. But at the same time, your mouth starts to get bored with the hot dogs. Right?

Speaker 0

So did you guys put condiments on your hot dogs? And if so, what was the strategy? Same kinds of condiments each time? Or did you have like a mustard dog and a ketchup dog? Like how'd you kind of switch it up?

Speaker 3

Unfortunately for me, I don't think I put any condiments on any of my hot dogs, which was kind of sad, but I think my first year, was just like, alright, let's just get this down. And I wasn't in the stadium yet. Like I started right when the game started, because I was in the parking lot. And then I think like the last couple of dogs, was just going for speed. We just, we just get them down.

Speaker 3

No condiments. I don't even know where the condiments were at that point, I think.

Speaker 2

Yeah. I think sort of same. I think for mine, the first salvo was no condiments. And then by, like, the sixth one, I needed to change it up a little bit. So at the Giants game and this is, like, kind of the issue, I think.

Speaker 2

But Oracle Park actually has really good concession food outside of hot dogs. And so when we were, like, first going in, Crystal and GC, you guys, oh, crab sandwiches and garlic fries. I'm just sitting here like, fuck. I really wanna try this, but, like, I can't waste stomach space. It smells so good.

Speaker 1

Wait. But you did end up eating some.

Speaker 2

I did end up eating, like, one bite. I was like, oh, okay. I gotta I gotta come back.

Speaker 1

And some fries too. I had one.

Speaker 2

That's one is negligible. But towards the end, yeah, I I think I had to, like, ask Crystal or someone, like, can you go grab some ketchup and mustard just to, like, spice things up? So I think for New York, we employed condiments much earlier. So Abi and I, like, we just got, like, a tray and just loaded up all the ketchup, mustard. They actually had honey mustard at the Yankee Stadium too, so I just got a little bit just to try what that'd be like on a hot dog.

Speaker 2

And probably wouldn't do that again. But it it it made some variety.

Speaker 1

Dude, also what's crazy is in the Giants Arena in SF, I asked them for, like, a tray so that I could just dump a bunch of condiments on it. Everyone was like, sorry, we can't give you that. Like, you have to buy something. Also, for cups, was like, can you give me, like, a water cup or something? They're like, no.

Speaker 1

Sorry. We actually keep inventory of these and it's how we keep count of, like, sales or, like, partially one of the ways we keep count of sales. And I was like, okay. Bye. But then in the Yankee Stadium, they were just giving out trays.

Speaker 1

And I was like, what the heck? Why was it so hard for me to get a tray in in SF? They're strict in SF. But it's like, damn, our posse bought, like, nine hot dogs and nine beers. Like, cut us some slack.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Yeah. Like, spare us one tray, please.

Speaker 1

I remember I was so shocked because once we sat down, like Jimin said, Avi already had a tray. And I was like, oh my god. Where'd you get that? Like, none of us bought anything yet. He was like, I just asked for one.

Speaker 1

I was like, are you serious right now?

Speaker 0

There's actually another secret strategy that came up during the New York game, which was actually something that the guys came up to kill the carbonation of the beer because that was one of the complaints, right? Like it's so carbonated, you're so full, how are you getting all this alcohol down? And one of the guys pulled up with a straw, He was like, dude, trust

Speaker 1

me, this is gonna help. And he started blowing bubbles in

Speaker 0

his beer and also using the straw to like keep sipping at the beer. So you're not like tipping your head back, guess least resistant to the movement, just like easier to sip. And that guy actually went on to finish all nine beers and all nine hot dogs. So if you guys were to do this again, do you think the straw strategy would help or are you like, it's not worth it to cut the carbonation?

Speaker 3

No, the straw strategy actually did help me finish my beers because I think at my last couple of beers, did run into Eddie and Nathan and Josephine and they're like, guys, out this strategy. And then we're like, oh, that's kinda gross. But, like, yeah, we'll try it. And it actually really, really did help. Without the carbonation, you can kinda just, like, drink a lot more of the beer faster.

Speaker 3

So, that is a good strategy, although it's a little gross.

Speaker 1

Dude, all I'm hearing is that because we had so many people doing it in New York, it's like so many different strategies came out, which were ultimately all very helpful.

Speaker 3

没错。

Yeah. That's so true.

Speaker 2

I hate that all these new strategies make me wanna try this for, like, a third time now. I was like, dude, degassing your beer? Genius. The order?

Speaker 3

天才。天才。

Genius. Genius.

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah. That's true. After the February, Jimin and I were debriefing. And we were like, oh, I guess, like, eating the hot dogs first is not as ideal because then when you drink the beer after, it expands the bread in your stomach. Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Maybe you just don't get as much done. But if you just get really drunk in the beginning, then like, drunchies, you know, you just you're down to eat after. Mhmm. Mhmm. So we were like, if you were to do this again for the third time, mind you, what would be the new strategy?

Speaker 2

I would definitely do what Katie did and then add in the degassing early.

Speaker 3

Maybe we have to do it for a third time. June, I think you have to do it for for a third time.

Speaker 2

For science.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I think I said if I did it, I'd do it at home, though. You could put the game on.

Speaker 1

No need to spend all that money. Every beer was, like, $20.

Speaker 2

是的。是的。

$20. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 0

Just get the walking pad out.

Speaker 1

No need to, like, do

Speaker 3

笑。所以

laughs. So

Speaker 2

dude, we got everything here.

Speaker 1

I actually also very casually attempted attempted the the 99999, nine, but I was very, like, not motivated. So I just tried to do it the one beer, one hot dog per inning, which I feel like is a fine strategy, but at some point, it started just slipping, like everything was slipping away from me because suddenly this inning was like two minutes, or you know this one inning was maybe like ten minutes and it gave gives you a false sense of security. I ended up doing like four-four. At that time I was just like, yeah whatever. I can't keep up with these innings, like, I'm just gonna chill now.

Speaker 1

But I do feel like probably back in the day, pre pitch clock, it's probably the move.

Speaker 0

I also wondered if it was getting confusing for people around us because our row was not super loud, but we were also just like cheering every time there were balls. And we would get like really sad when people were striking out. And I was like, are these people just turning around being like, who do you who are

Speaker 1

you guys even rooting for? Like, what is even happening in this row?

Speaker 2

So that day, it was like the Yankees versus, like, the Orioles. Right? And the Orioles are objectively just ass. We were just complaining about every time the Orioles go up to bat, they were just immediately done, and we'd just be so sad. And I think in front of us was, like, a family of Baltimore fans.

Speaker 2

And they're just like, oh, man. This row of, like, hot dog eating people would just be like, why

Speaker 1

is it all happening?

Speaker 0

At one point, I was just like, dude, I feel like

Speaker 1

we reek of hot dogs. Like, I can't get the hot dog smell out of my brain. Wait. Also, there was a really funny moment where we're getting close to the end of the game and James was, like, trying to eat a few more hot dogs. And he was like, I think I'm gonna be sick.

Speaker 1

And then the row in front of us turned around it with, like, shock and horror. And then James was like, oh, wait. No. Sorry. I was just kidding.

Speaker 1

Like, I'm not actually gonna be sick.

Speaker 2

And they're like, okay. Should we move?

Speaker 0

Like Direct splash zone. I

Speaker 3

think at one point, this was when I was like drinking a lot of the beers and they're still very carbonated. I thought I was going to like yak a little bit because of the carbonation, but I didn't, which was good. I don't know. In some form of $9.99, if you throw up, like, have to, like, start over, which is crazy because imagine just starting over and doing way more than nine ninety nine.

Speaker 1

Yeah. I think those were the rules that Jimin's League was going by. Like, if you throw up, you have to start over.

Speaker 3

It's brutal.

Speaker 1

That's why when Katie asked, at that point, you, like, asked in the group chat. Right? You're like, what is the rule around throwing up? Not that I'm going to, but just in case. And then I just responded with whatever Jimin's League had said.

Speaker 1

And then everyone was like, woah, that's kind of harsh. And I was like, damn, dude. Like, Jimin's League is harsh.

Speaker 2

Yeah. They're mean. Every time I complain, they're like, maybe just stop losing. I was like, alright.

Speaker 3

Cool. You know? But

Speaker 1

I think we ended up on something like, if you throw up on purpose, you definitely have to start over. But if it's, like, not on purpose, then just pick yourself back up.

Speaker 3

Yeah. Lock it. Yeah. Yeah. When I read that message from Jimmy, I was like, thank you, Jimmy.

Speaker 3

You're so you're so kind. You're so kind and so fair.

Speaker 1

It probably helped that everyone was doing the challenge. So they're like, oh, yeah. I could totally see someone throwing up from me. So I think it's okay.

Speaker 3

Yeah. True. I think if you're just dictating, you'd be like, no. Why would that be allowed? Because you're not you're not in it.

Speaker 2

Like, I think a lot of people hit walls sooner than they thought they would. Maybe that gives them also a greater appreciation for you and I, Katie, for trying at least to hit hit her metrics. And, of course, for Eddie actually completing the whole thing. So.

Speaker 3

By being honest, I think at my after my two dogs and my second or third beer, was like, oh, I'm feeling it. And I barely have, like, eaten or drank anything. This is gonna be really rough.

Speaker 1

I remember a lot of the guys were like, I'm humbled today.

Speaker 3

Yeah. I guess I actually thought maybe more of the guys were gonna finish it, but yeah, only Eddie.

Speaker 1

I thought if anyone would be able to finish it, it would be Eddie because we all know Eddie is very capable of eating a lot and drinking a lot. So I was like, in this challenge, I think he can do it with enough time.

Speaker 2

I think another thing that we lost, I guess, in a sense was usually if the, I guess, the home team. Right? The home team is usually playing the bottom of the inning. And so if they're leading by the time the away team is done with, like, the top of the ninth inning, the bottom of the ninth inning actually doesn't get played. So you lose that half inning there too.

Speaker 2

I think, Katie, you were almost done, and then they stopped after the top of the ninth. And I think I remember you were just like, no. We had more time. We could, like, get an extra one in or something. So that was, like, another time management thing that I think we sometimes forget about.

Speaker 2

Right? It's, like, sometimes the bottom of the ninth just doesn't get played.

Speaker 3

I actually didn't know that happened. So thank you for informing me that they didn't play the bottom of the ninth. Like, think at the end, I was just, like, really drunk. I didn't know yeah. No.

Speaker 3

I think if I had more time Yeah. I could have done a couple more.

Speaker 2

Exactly. I I think that's why I remember you're, like, you're just sitting there. You're just, like, eating. Just, oh, no. I could keep going.

Speaker 2

Like, hey. The game's over.

Speaker 1

Dude, Mel was like, wait. What happened to the bottom of the ninth? She was like, what happened to the rest of the game? Why don't we just end?

Speaker 3

Yeah. And I remember at the end, there's, like, nobody there Yeah. Besides us.

Speaker 1

We like sat there for another forty like thirty to forty minutes I think.

Speaker 3

Did they kick us out?

Speaker 2

We left before they kicked us out but they were starting to.

Speaker 1

To be fair we were also celebrating Katie's success and also Eddie having completed the whole thing.

Speaker 0

So I guess reflecting back now, how do you feel about your final dog and beard count? And do you feel like you beat your own expectations going into the punishment, or are you kind of like, oh, I did worse than I expected?

Speaker 2

So our league, the previous year, was also a variance of the nine nine nine. Although, I think because, you know, not everyone could have done it, we they had negotiated down to just nine and nines. You had to drink and eat a total of nine items that would qualify. So I think going in, I, of course, wanted to try and finish the whole nine nine nine, but I think my floor had to be at least nine items and then ideally hit nine of one item. Having said that, I do think I fell short on the drinking part, so I would like to redeem myself maybe at some point if if a third attempt is called for.

Speaker 3

Wait. So last year, what did they eat and drink?

Speaker 2

So last year, I believe it was either five and four or six and three. I'll have to check, but he apparently went home and then took a huge dump after and said he felt very unwell.

Speaker 3

So he also did beers and hot dogs or

Speaker 2

what was and hot dogs.

Speaker 3

好的。

Oh, okay. Okay.

Speaker 2

The the total hatched the tally up to nine. Oh. Although he had a corn dog too, but they counted it. So

Speaker 3

Oh, delicious.

Speaker 1

Yeah. Dude, and they were still so strict after the previous person only did nine total. True.

Speaker 2

They're all strict until it's them having to do it, right? It's not them, they're just like, oh, yeah, whatever, yo.

Speaker 3

I think for me, I was pretty nervous. I was like, I don't know honestly like how many hot dogs I could eat. And I'm not really good at drinking volume. So going into it, I was kind of nervous. I was like, Oh no, I don't wanna disappoint anybody and Obi's putting all this pressure on me.

Speaker 3

He's like, You leave it. You gotta leave it all out on the field. Blah blah blah. And I was like, okay okay like I'm gonna try my best I'm really proud of my numbers I didn't think I could drink nine beers in like a little less than three hours and also do the hot dogs I don't want to sound like I'm not being humble, but you know, I think I had a couple more hours. Maybe I could have finished the hot dogs.

Speaker 3

Yeah. So I'm proud of my numbers.

Speaker 0

Dude, you crushed it, Katie. Like seriously,

Speaker 1

I was like, dude, this is

Speaker 0

when you came back and you had

Speaker 1

this aura of like being locked in and you were

Speaker 0

like, yeah, I'm at like six

Speaker 1

or seven beers, two hot dogs, I was like, oh my god. She's like gonna do it or gonna

Speaker 0

get really fucking close to actually finishing it. I was amazed.

Speaker 1

But yeah, you came back with such confidence. We were like, oh my god, she is. She's here to take on this challenge.

Speaker 3

Yeah. I think like when I came back, that was when we discovered the the bear straw trick. Mhmm. And then I was like, oh, I can finish these beers. So I was like, alright.

Speaker 3

Let's go. We gotta lock in.

Speaker 2

Based on total units, right, you had 15. For me, I was about 15 as well. I'm, like, twice your size. So you basically, like, outperformed me. So that's, you know when we when we saw your I saw your file numbers, I was like, damn, that is that's mad respect right now.

Speaker 3

Thank you. Thank you.

Speaker 1

Oh, how was the aftermath of this all?

Speaker 2

The first time or the second

Speaker 1

time? Both, I guess.

Speaker 2

First time, I think I took it a little more seriously. So I, like, didn't eat too much beforehand and then bought, like, these two liter bottles of green juice from Trader Joe's. I was like, I need, like, a fucking vegetable after this ordeal, and I was just, like, drinking that. I was actually okay. Like, the next day, I think I was mostly fine.

Speaker 2

My stomach was, like, a little uncomfortable maybe towards the end of the second day. But after about, like, two two days, I was pretty back to normal. Was like, I could probably eat, like, a hot dog again. But I did not. I did not until, like, maybe a few weeks later, and I had a hot dog and then immediately got depressed.

Speaker 2

So I don't know. So it was like my body reacting adversely to, like, more hot dog meat. But I, like, ate it. I told Crystal, was like, dude, I just had a hot dog and I feel kinda depressed.

Speaker 1

The trauma. It was like lunchtime, I think. He's like, woah. There's, like, hot dogs today for lunch. Maybe I'll eat one.

Speaker 1

And then two hours later, I get a text that's like, I'm depressed.

Speaker 3

我不

I don't

Speaker 2

I don't feel good.

Speaker 1

I was like, oh, no. The body keeps score.

Speaker 3

Your body's like, no. Abort. Abort. Abort.

Speaker 1

我当时

I was

Speaker 2

like, what is this? Not again. My adviser is like a kind of a big sports guy. This one professor on my on my reading committee, she's like this like, she's from Italy. Like, she's very Italian.

Speaker 2

Like, doesn't really understand America sometimes. And so the next day, like, I ran into her. She's like, oh, how was your weekend? I'm like, do you really wanna know?

Speaker 1

她说,

She's like,

Speaker 2

yeah. Tell me. Tell me. And so I explained this nine nine nine thing and, like, the look of horror on her face, like, as the description continued. She's like, why would you do that?

Speaker 2

Like, why would you do this to yourself? I was like, for fun? She was like, for fun? I'm like my adviser just standing there and, like, you just see his eyes, like, dying as he was, like, looking at me just like just like, this is what my student does.

Speaker 3

On the weekend, he eats nine hot dogs and drinks nine beers for fun.

Speaker 2

Yeah. That time was okay. And then the second time, I think same thing. Took about two days.

Speaker 3

After, I felt drunk, so I felt good. And then maybe a couple hours afterwards, like, I passed out. And then I remember you guys went to dinner and Obi was like, do you wanna come? And I was like, man, I really I really can't get up right now. And then I I continued to pass out until, like, maybe for like five hours.

Speaker 3

I think I woke up at 11:30PM. And then at that point, my body wasn't feeling it wasn't feeling terrible. I was still feeling really, really full. But I remember I was like, I really, really want to eat something that's not a hot dog. Like, I really want it.

Speaker 3

I deserve something to eat other than a hot dog. So I think I was really craving actual food, but my body was still really, really full. So I ended up making some cold noodles. And so I started eating that. I like, wow, this tastes really good.

Speaker 3

But my body was still really full, but I just wanted to like taste something that was not, I don't know, hot dog. Yeah. And then I think the next day I actually felt surprisingly not too bad. So, yeah, I was a bit surprised by that. But I guess there's like a decent amount of water and beer, so I felt okay.

Speaker 1

I guess the sleeping probably helped a lot. Yeah. And the walking.

Speaker 3

走路。

The walking.

Speaker 1

The walking once again comes into play. I think we unfortunately trapped Jimin after his game, because we went up to SF to, like, you know, for the game. And so we carpooled up and we were gonna go back down together, but we ended up just like hanging out, drinking, and all of that. And Jimin was a trooper, and he stayed through the whole thing when I feel like he really probably needed to go home and sleep.

Speaker 3

Good all.

Speaker 2

Yeah. Some somehow that night, I I became the most okay by the end of the night. I was I was the most most okay person.

Speaker 1

The responsible one. Yeah. Yeah. But we learned our lesson. Did we?

Speaker 3

I I was surprised that Eddie and I no. I was surprised that all of you guys went out to eat more. I was like, wait. How did they do that? Oh,

Speaker 1

wait. That's true. That Eddie, of all people, also went out to eat. Jisoo didn't really do the challenge, and then Nope. I stopped pretty early.

Speaker 1

The other girl who was with us, Cindy, she also didn't do the challenge. So us three and our boyfriends went out and then the boys went out much later though. They went out at, like, nine, I think Yeah. To eat. I think they were trying to stall because they were like, I'm so full.

Speaker 1

But I remember because Mel was like, wait, guys. Can we go eat dinner? At, like, six or something. And they didn't end up eating till, like, nine.

Speaker 3

That's crazy. Yeah. I was like, Eddie went out to eat after that. I was so surprised. But Eddie's felt different.

Speaker 3

He's felt different. That's true.

Speaker 2

I think he went home to take a nap first.

Speaker 1

没错。没错。

Oh, wait. That's right. That's right.

Speaker 3

Wow. Jimin's the true trooper going out after nine ninety nine.

Speaker 2

两次。两次。

Twice. Twice.

Speaker 0

Okay. Well, I have a final question for both of you. Now that you have done what I would consider a major punishment for losing fantasy football, do you feel like the experience changed the way that you see future punishments for fantasy or just punishments in general? You know, like your thoughts on being in a punishment league or maybe this changed the way you wanna pick the punishment next season, etcetera, etcetera?

Speaker 2

Unfortunately, I end up losing more often than I'd like, so I've been subjected to several different punishments now. I still like to believe that I won't end up getting punished. So I'm usually for, like, something that's a little more a little more challenging, I would say. And then as the season progresses, I wish we chose, like, the more tamer one. But, I think also for your league, Katie, Jason, Chris Lee, like, league also has, like, a weekly punishment too.

Speaker 2

Right? And I think that also changes how you view things. Our league has, like, a similar variation of that punishment. So, you know, instead of also worrying about your, like, overall win loss record every week, I'm also sweating, like, each individual player's improvement. So if I know, okay, I'm gonna lose this week's lineup, but at least I need everyone to, like, be in the positive.

Speaker 2

Right? Otherwise, I'm cooked for this other lurking punishment that we have. But, yeah, I think at the end of the day, it's like, we have this punishment. It's supposed to be fun. Don't kill yourself over it, but at least try.

Speaker 2

As long as you try your best, no one's gonna fault you for it. I've kinda just gotten numb to

Speaker 1

Sounds so jaded.

Speaker 2

I'm tired, boss.

Speaker 3

Yeah. I guess this is like my first time participating into this type of Fantasy League and also doing, I guess, like one of these major punishments. I think for this time around, not only I gave my best effort, I think everybody else also kind of participated with me. Going forward, I think it seems like we'll also pick something that's, like, similar intensity to, like, keep it going. But it does seem like our league, like, everybody wants to participate or like try it out as well.

Speaker 3

So it seems like it's going in the direction where we're like, okay, let's try to pick something that's not too easy, but also, you know, other people can participate for fun. It seems like not a negative thing, the punishment.

Speaker 1

That's true. I feel like we've always been like, as we decided this year's like, a big thing was can everyone make it? Is it gonna be, a fun activity for everyone to at least watch or be a part of? So, yeah, I guess that, what is this? Are we just, like, hating ourselves?

Speaker 1

Trauma bonding. Yeah.

Speaker 2

It's it's community building. Right? I think, like like Katie said, everyone flew in for that. I mean, for mine, people also flew in and made a weekend out of it. And so in a very macabre manner, it builds community.

Speaker 3

We're creating conflict for ourselves so that we can we can get better.

Speaker 1

Also, an exciting news, Katie's been destroying the league this year.

Speaker 2

I'll get a bench.

Speaker 1

She's, like, four and o right now. I don't wanna jinx anything, but, like, things are looking good for her.

Speaker 3

Yeah. I was, asking some other people over doing nine ninety nine. I was like, oh yeah, like, is there a chance that I could end up doing it, doing the punishment again? And they said no. So I was very happy about that.

Speaker 3

I was like, yay.

Speaker 1

Well, I feel like similar to our first episode about fantasy sports, the theme is similar that even though there's, like, this big, harsh, scary punishment at the end, it's still very community building and somehow trauma bonding, I guess, when we subject ourselves to join. But regardless, I feel like it's a fun time because at the end of the day we know that it's not necessarily completely possible, but what matters is that we put in the effort and have a good time. It probably sounds kind of crazy, this whole episode and these punishments, but don't worry, we're secretly having fun. Thank you so much, Katie and Jimin, for joining us to talk through surviving a punishment for a fantasy league. And for our listeners out there, if there's any interesting punishments you've seen or heard of or even participated in, feel free to share with us.
