You may think you know grim fairy tales, and you may think that they are sweet and boring.

But listen, those tales you heard were the cute, happy, little kid bedtime versions of the grim tales.
原始的黑暗童话根本不是那样的。
The original grim fairy tales aren't like that at all.
它们古怪、有时令人作呕，而且常常令人恐惧。
They're weird and sometimes gross and often scary.
换句话说，它们就是黑暗的。
In other words, they're grim.

And I'm about to walk into a classroom and tell one of the original grim grim tales to a bunch of kids.

On a scale of grim, grimmer, and grimmest, the story I'm going to tell today is grimmer.
它不是最吓人的故事，但绝对充满悬疑，而且有一个极其邪恶的阴谋。
It's not the scariest story, but it's definitely suspenseful, and there is one very evil scheme.
如果故事进行到某个部分，你开始感到害怕或不适，你可以这样做。
If I get to a part of the story and you start to feel scared or uncomfortable, this is what you could do.
你可以把音量调低，数到五，然后再把音量调回来。
You could turn down the volume and count to five, then turn the volume back up.

The water of life.
从前，有一位国王病得很重，所有的医生都说他必死无疑。
Once upon a time, there was a king who was very sick, and all the doctors said he was sure to die.
国王有三个儿子。
The king had three sons.
长子和次子都很悲伤，但他们说父亲年事已高，是时候让王国传到他们手中了。
The eldest two were sad, but said that their father was old and it was time for the kingdom to pass to them.
但最小的儿子非常希望父亲能活下来，他问遍了王国里所有的医生，看是否有任何办法能救活父亲。
But the youngest son desperately wanted his father to live and asked every doctor in the kingdom if there was any way to save him.
每位医生都说不行。
Every doctor said no.
救活国王是不可能的。
It was impossible to save the king.
直到最后，有一位医生说：如果你能找到生命之水，他或许还能活下来。
Until at last, one said, well, if you could find the water of life, he might live.
但那是不可能的。
But that's impossible.

Besides, I don't know if it even really exists.
当国王的小儿子听说了生命之水后，他充满了希望。
When the king's youngest son heard of the water of life, he was filled with hope.
他宣布：
He announced
我会找到它，救我父亲的命。
I shall find it and save my father's life.
但他的兄弟们并不高兴。
His brothers, though, were not pleased.
大儿子说
The eldest brother said
我们不能让他去。
We cannot let him go.
如果他找到了生命之水，父亲肯定会把王国给他，而不是给我们中的任何一个。
If he finds the water of life, surely our father will give the kingdom to him and not to one of us.
于是，大王子心里想：
And then the eldest brother thought to himself,
我去。
I will go.
我要么找到它，父亲就把王国给我；要么我离开期间父亲去世，我照样能继承王国。
Either I will find it and our father will give me the kingdom, or our father will die while I am gone, and still I will inherit the kingdom.
我们对大王子怎么看？
What do we think of the eldest brother?
他很邪恶。
He's evil.
你觉得他很邪恶？
You think he's evil?
他有点贪婪，因为他真的很想要王国。
He's kind of greedy because he really wants the kingdom.

He does.

So the eldest brother announced his intention to his father and brothers and set off to find the water of life.
大儿子骑着马疾驰时，在路上遇到了一个蓝色的小矮人。
The eldest brother was galloping along on his steed when he came across a blue dwarf on the road.

You heard that right.
一个蓝色的小矮人。
A dwarf who was blue.
是蓝精灵吗？
A smurf?

Not a smurf.

Let's be clear.

As the eldest brother went galloping by, the blue dwarf called out.

But the eldest brother bellowed.

Out of my way.
他用马鞭抽了那个蓝色小矮人。
And he swatted the blue dwarf with his riding crop.
好吧，这个蓝矮人并没有无视他。
Well, the blue dwarf did not blank that.
当大哥策马离去时，他咒骂了大哥。
He cursed the eldest brother as the brother galloped away.
不是对着他咒骂。
Not cursed at him.
是咒骂了他。
Cursed him.
对着他咒骂意思是说了脏话。
Cursed at him means you used a bad word.
咒骂他是什么意思？
What does cursed him mean?
就是给他施个咒之类的。
To put a like spell on him or something.

Exactly.
长子很快发现自己来到了一条峡谷中，那是一条非常狭窄的山谷。
The eldest brother soon found himself in a ravine, which is a very narrow valley.
峡谷变得越来越窄。
It became narrower and narrower.
长子试图继续前进，但最终峡谷变得太窄，他既无法向前也无法后退。
The eldest brother tried to push ahead, but eventually the ravine was so tight that the eldest brother could go neither forward nor backward.
他被牢牢卡住了。
He was stuck fast.
在城堡里，国王和他的另外两个儿子越来越担心长子。
Back in the castle, the king and his two remaining sons became more and more worried about the eldest brother.
直到有一天，最小的儿子宣布道。
Until one day, the youngest brother announced.
我要出去找到我的长兄和生命之水，把他们俩都带回家。
I shall go out and find my eldest brother and the water of life and bring them both home.
但二儿子心里想。
But the middle brother thought to himself.
我弟弟只是想独占所有功劳，这样他就能继承我父亲的王国。
My little brother just wants all the credit so that he will inherit my father's kingdom.
于是，二王子宣布他要去寻找。
So the middle brother announced that he would go instead.
他就出发了。
And off he went.
二王子骑着马疾驰时，遇到了路上那个同样的蓝色小矮人，不是小精灵。
The middle brother was galloping along on his horse when he came across the same blue dwarf, not a smurf, in the road.
这到底是怎么回事？你说什么？
Why is this what did you say?
肯定是小精灵。
Definitely a smurf.
当二王子走近时，蓝色小矮人喊道：
As the middle brother approached, the blue dwarf called out,
你这么着急要去哪儿？
where are you going so fast?
但中兄弟大吼道，
But the middle brother bellowed,
让开！
out of my way.
他用马鞭打向那个蓝色小矮人。
And he struck the blue dwarf with his riding rock.
蓝矮人决定，这俩兄弟是他见过最糟糕的，于是他也诅咒了中兄弟。
Well, the blue dwarf decided that these were two of the rottenest brothers he had ever met, and he cursed the middle one too.
中兄弟很快来到了一片树林。
The middle brother soon found himself in a wood.
荆棘变得越来越密集。
The brambles became thicker and thicker.
中兄弟试图向前推进，但最终荆棘太密，他既无法前进也无法后退。
The middle brother tried to push ahead, but eventually the brambles were so thick that he could neither go forward nor backward.
他被牢牢困住了。
He was stuck fast.
回到城堡里，国王和他的小儿子非常担心。
Back in the castle, the king and his youngest son were very worried indeed.
最后，小儿子宣布道：
At last, the youngest announced:
我要出去找我的兄弟们和生命之水，把他们带回家。
I will go out and find my brothers and the water of life and bring them home.

And off he went.
最小的兄弟骑着马疾驰而过时，遇到了路上同样的蓝矮人。
The youngest brother was galloping along on his horse when he came across the same blue dwarf in the road.
蓝矮人本想不问青红皂白就诅咒这个最小的兄弟，因为他早已厌倦了这些王子骑着马横冲直撞，完全不顾将来这些道路上会有的限速规则。
The blue dwarf considered just cursing the youngest brother before even asking his question as he was sick to death of these princes galloping along on their horse, totally disobeying the speed limit that would one day exist on these roads.
但这位王子看起来似乎与他的兄弟们有所不同。
But this prince somehow looked different from his brothers.
于是蓝矮人决定赌一把。
So the blue dwarf decided to take a chance.
你这么快要去哪儿？
Where are you going so fast?
蓝矮人问道。
The blue dwarf asked.
然后他举起手来保护自己，因为谁也猜不准王子们会做什么。
And then he raised his hands to protect himself, because you can never tell with princes.
但这位最小的兄弟绝不会用马鞭打一个陌生的蓝矮人。
But the youngest brother would never smack a strange blue dwarf in the face with a riding crop.
他勒住马，回答了蓝矮人。
He pulled up his horse and answered the blue dwarf.
我正在寻找生命之水。
I am looking for the water of life.
我父亲病得很重。
My father is very sick.
而且，我也在找我的兄弟们。
Also, I'm looking for my brothers.
你见过他们吗？
Have you seen them?
哦，我见过他们。
Oh, I've seen them.
蓝矮人说。
Said the blue dwarf.

But I wouldn't worry about them.

They're no good.

I can help you find the water of life if you like.

And so the blue dwarf told the youngest brother where it was.

The water of life sat in a well in a courtyard of an enchanted castle.
蓝矮人解释道。
The blue dwarf explained.
如果你心地善良，取得它应该不会太难。
If you're kind and good of heart, it shouldn't be much trouble to get it.
最小的兄弟走了不久，很快就来到了这座魔法城堡。
The youngest brother journeyed for a short time, and soon he was at the enchanted castle.
通往城堡的道路由铁制成，最小的兄弟的马蹄在铁路上行进时发出奇怪的咔嗒声。
The road leading up to it was made of iron, and the youngest brother's horse's hooves made strange clacking sounds as he rode down the center of the iron road.
当最小的兄弟到达城堡大门时，一位美丽的公主迎接了他。
When the youngest brother arrived at the castle gate, he was greeted by a beautiful princess.
他告诉她，自己正在寻找生命之水，以拯救他垂死的父亲。
He told her he was seeking the water of life to save his dying father.

She saw that he was brave and good of heart, so she gave him the water of life.
很简单。
Just pretty easy.

Though the princess had warned the youngest brother of a hard and evil year ahead, he was so overjoyed at having gotten the water of life for his father that he made his way back to the blue dwarf with a happy heart.

But still, he had not found his brothers.
因此，当他来到路上的矮人面前时，最小的弟弟恳求矮人。
So when he came to the dwarf in the road, the youngest brother begged the dwarf.

Help me find my brothers.

I cannot bear to return home without them.
蓝矮人说。
The blue dwarf said.

Don't worry about your brothers, please.
他们不是好人。
They are no good.

But the youngest brother begged and pleaded with the dwarf.
由于王子善良而真诚，矮人最终心软了，将大儿子从峡谷中释放，将二儿子从荆棘丛中解救出来。
And because the prince was kind and earnest, the dwarf finally relented and released the eldest brother from the ravine and the middle brother from the brambles.
当三兄弟重聚时，他们欣喜若狂。
When the three brothers were reunited, they rejoiced.
接着，最小的兄弟告诉其他人他找到了生命之水，以及公主们的承诺。
Then the youngest brother told the others of finding the water of life and the princesses promised him.
他的兄弟们欢呼雀跃，因为父亲的病有了治愈之法，而且最小的兄弟的前途也有了保障。
His brothers cheered that the cure for their father's illness had been found and that their youngest brother's fortune was secure.
但他们内心却充满恐惧。
But in their hearts, they were afraid.
如果父亲因为最小的兄弟找到生命之水而将王国赐予他，该怎么办？
What if their father rewarded the youngest brother for finding the water of life by giving him the kingdom?
那样的话，他就会拥有两个王国——我们的和公主们的。
Then he'd have two kingdoms, theirs and the princesses.
那他们会怎么样呢？
And what would happen to them?
深夜，在回家的路上，大儿子和二儿子密谋了一个计划。
Late at night, on the journey home, the eldest brother and the middle brother concocted a plan.
趁弟弟睡觉时，他们偷走了他手中的生命之水。
As their brother slept, they stole the water of life from their youngest brother.
他们把生命之水倒进了大儿子的瓶子里。
They poured the water of life into the eldest brother's flask.
然后用附近肮脏池塘里的水代替了它。
And they replaced it with water from a filthy pond nearby.
第二天早上，最小的弟弟毫无察觉，三兄弟仍像朋友一样继续回家。
In the morning, the youngest brother suspected nothing, and the three brothers proceeded home as friends.
当他们到达王宫时，父亲泪流满面地拥抱了儿子们，然后感激地接过最小的儿子献上的生命之水。
When they reached the palace, the father embraced his boys tearfully, and then he gratefully took the water of life the youngest brother offered him.

No, no, no.

And the king drank it down.

Oh, okay.

Immediately, their father began to choke and cough, and then he vomited.

Our youngest brother must have been trying to poison you.

But instantly, their father recovered.

He huddled with the eldest brother and the middle brother, and it was decided.

For his betrayal, the youngest brother would be banished from the palace, and anyone who tried to give him food or comfort would be executed as a traitor.

The youngest brother lived in the wilderness, foraging for nuts and berries and what food scraps careless woodsman left behind.

And if they saw him walking on their lands, they would holler and shout, It's the father killer, the traitor.

The youngest brother wandered the icy forest, wondering what had happened to his bottle, the water of life, and hoping not to starve to death.

He did occasionally wonder about his brother's role in his exile, but he couldn't believe that they would have betrayed him.

Finally, after wandering for an entire year, the youngest brother fell to the snowy ground, unable to go any farther.

Just then, he saw a tiny figure coming through the forest toward him.

It was Murph.

This is Murph?

The blue dwarf came through the trees and sat down by the youngest brother.

He took out his wine skin and gave him some hot spiced wine and helped him to eat a slice of bread.

When he had recovered some strength, the youngest brother said,

And the blue dwarf said,

I told you not to trust your brothers.

The youngest brother thanked the blue dwarf and began his journey on foot to the enchanted castle.

However, they had not forgotten about the princess in the enchanted castle.

Sounds fair to me.

So on the appointed day, the eldest brother set out to the enchanted castle to steal the youngest brother's promised bride.
他到达后，发现一条美丽的金色道路一直延伸到城堡大门。
He arrived to discover a beautiful golden road leading all the way to the castle gate.
长子宣称。
The eldest brother declared.
我不敢骑马走在这条路上。
I dare not ride on this.
我的马蹄可能会把它踩裂。
My horse's hooves may crack it.
于是他让马沿着道路旁行走。
So he steered his steed to walk alongside the road.

He's not gonna work.

But when he arrived at the castle gate, the guards refused to even open it or listen to his business.

The youngest brother was weak from his year of exile and so grateful to find the enchanted castle and so eager to get to the princess who had been so kind to him that he sprinted for the enchanted castle in his tattered shoes and filthy clothes, not even noticing what kind of road he was running on.

The gates were thrown open and princess was waiting for him, beaming with joy.

Yay.

A month later, their wedding was to be celebrated.

An invitation arrived for the two elder brothers and their father.

Enclosed was a note from the youngest brother explaining that he was innocent, but that he forgave his father and brothers for suspecting him.

It further explained that he was to be married to the princess of the enchanted castle and would they come and make up with him on the day of the wedding.

The brothers arrived with wickedness in their hearts and long knives tucked into their tall riding boots.

Late that night, after everyone was in bed, the eldest brother and the middle brother crept out of their rooms and made their way down the dark hall to the youngest brother's room.

They snuck inside quietly, making not a sound.

And they came to the side of their youngest brother's bed.

And they stabbed him with their long knives.

And that is a great question, which I have no idea where it came from.

And, like, what could we possibly have been talking about in that classroom that provoked that excellent mind experiment?

Maybe I've told you this in another secrets episode.

I was terrified about that.

So I was trying to get these kids to stop saying it was a smurf, which, of course, as you all know, is the worst possible thing you can do.

And, of course, none of this was planned.

Moving on quickly from Smurfs.

This story is really kind of a classic.

It fits the tropes of fairy tales really perfectly.

I mean, almost like it would be a cliche.
有一个国王，三个兄弟。
There's a king, three brothers.
大儿子和二儿子对最小的弟弟很刻薄，而他却非常善良。
The eldest brothers are mean to the youngest one, and he's really kind.
他们启程前往世界，去赢得王国。
They set out into the world to win the kingdom.
他们遇到了一个陌生人。
They meet a stranger.
年长的兄弟们态度粗鲁，而最小的弟弟却很友善。
The elder brothers are rude, and then the youngest is kind.
我的意思是，这本该是一个非常老套又有点无聊的童话，但事实并非如此。
I mean, it would be like a really cliche and kind of boring fairy tale, except that it's not.
这并不是因为一个完美的童话，即使你听过上百万遍，它依然是完美的。
It's not because a, a perfect fairy tale is a perfect fairy tale even if you've heard it a million times.

And then, of course, there's the kids who make it even better, and then Alana Milner, our producer on this episode, who put all the music together and directed the actors and sound effects.

We do that all the time in these fairy tales in particular.

So when the brothers really start doing bad stuff, when they switch out the water of life on their younger brother, for example, I kind of love that actually what motivated them was fear.

It's not just they were some evil guys and they did evil stuff because they're evil, but they were afraid that they would lose the kingdom.
他们害怕自己会惹上麻烦。
They were afraid that they would get in trouble.

I think that's actually really realistic.
就像在现实生活中，我不相信真的存在纯粹为了作恶而作恶的人，或者这样的人极少极少。
Like, in real life, actually, I don't believe that there are people who are just straight up evil for evil's sake or very, very, very few.
历史上大多数反派，老实说，很可能是因为恐惧或渴望被爱而行动，主要是害怕自己不被爱，或者渴望权力，又害怕别人比自己更有权力、能控制自己。
Most of the bad guys in history were honestly probably motivated by fear or by a desire to be loved and mostly a fear that they weren't loved or a desire to be powerful and a fear that somebody else would be powerful above them, have power over them.
所以，仅仅用‘他们害怕’这个词，就让这两个年长的兄弟显得格外真实。
And so just that little word that they were afraid, to me, makes these boys, these two elder brothers feel kinda really realistic.
继续谈反派这个主题，我觉得当蓝矮人说‘你的善良很好，但你不必蠢到这个地步’时，特别有意思。
Keeping on this theme of bad guys, I think it's really interesting when the blue dwarf says, your kindness is all well and good, but you don't have to be an idiot about it.

I love the voice of the blue dwarf in this episode, by the way.

That actor nailed it.

I think sometimes it's easy for me to try to be so kind that I give people the benefit of the doubt when they don't really deserve it.

You know, this happened to me a fair amount as a kid, not because I was kind, but because I wanted the cool kids to like me.

They would, you know, tease me and I would forgive them and be like, you know, I'm sure they didn't really mean it or we were just having a good time.

So our rule in our house is try to identify the unreliable friends, and if you still want to be friends with them, you can be, but you should know they are gonna be unreliable.

And if you get your feelings hurt again and again, you just have to say to yourself, this is an unreliable friend, and I don't need to be an idiot about it.

And this is true not just of bad guys in your life or bad people in your life, but also of bad guys in the world.

Sometimes people really do show you who they are.

And sometimes the kindest thing that you can do for yourself and other people is to be clear headed, clear eyed, and strong, and stand up to people who are doing bad things.
