Speaker 3

Speaker 3

But today was Grapeleaf Day, when Lina would help her grandma make warak enab.

Speaker 3

Siti was losing her eyesight, and Lina loved helping her cook.

Speaker 3

'I want to tell Siti about the snowstorm and make sure she's okay.' the snow's so deep,' Lina's mom said.

Speaker 3

We could go with you,' Lina's dad offered.

Lina squinched her eyes and pulled her scarf over her nose.

Speaker 3

Speaker 3

I wonder if this is how Siti feels, Lina thought.

Speaker 3

Snack, snack, snack.

Speaker 3

The noise was low to the ground.

Speaker 3

What was that?

Speaker 3

It was the treads of Lina's boots crunching snow into tiny waffles.

Speaker 3

Two ways to hear snow.

Speaker 3

Speaker 3

She listened for more.

Swish, swish, swish, swish.

Speaker 3

Scritch, scratch, scritch, scratch.

Speaker 3

Another snow noise?

Speaker 3

Lina saw long skinny tracks by her boots.

Speaker 3

Speaker 3

Lena reached Siti's building all out of breath, her boots covered with white powder.

Speaker 3

Stomp, stomp, stomp.

Speaker 3

Lena giggled.

Speaker 3

She was making the eighth way to hear snow.

Speaker 3

Hello, Lina, the lady in the lobby said.

Speaker 3

Go on in.

Speaker 3

She pointed towards Lina's grandma's room.

Speaker 3

Lina tapped on the door.

Speaker 3

Surprise, City, it's me.

Speaker 3

I came to make grape leaves with you.

Speaker 3

Lina threw her coat and mittens on the radiator to dry.

Speaker 3

Wonderful.

Speaker 3

The lamb and rice are ready, Siti said.

Speaker 3

Yalla, I can't wait, Lina shouted.

Speaker 3

Let's get started.

Speaker 3

Lina rinsed the grape leaves and placed them on towels.

Speaker 3

Put some filling in the center, rolled them up and put them in the pot, Siti instructed.

Speaker 3

They're like little grape leaf cocoons, Lina said, looking at them piled on the plate.

Speaker 3

Or lots of little sleeping bags, Siti replied.

Speaker 3

Mine looked like a mustache.

Speaker 3

Lina held up her stuffed grape leaf under her nose.

Speaker 3

Siti held hers under her nose, too.

Speaker 3

That's good, she wrinkled up her face and said, We look like a couple of real tough guys, in the tough guy voice.

Speaker 3

Siti, did you know we had a blizzard last night?

Speaker 3

Of course.

Speaker 3

Lina was surprised.

Speaker 3

How could her grandma know when she couldn't see very well?

Speaker 3

Then she heard a noise.

Speaker 3

Drip, drip went the mittens.

Speaker 3

It was the sound of snow melting.

Speaker 3

Nine ways to hear snow.

Speaker 3

Suddenly, Lina understood how Siti knew.

Speaker 3

Siti, did you hear the snow?

Speaker 3

Siti smiled.

Speaker 3

Each morning I opened the window and listened.

Speaker 3

Today, everything sounded hushed and soft.

Speaker 3

No noise is the sound that means it's snowing.

Speaker 3

City, I listened to.

Speaker 3

I heard snow nine different ways.

Speaker 3

Shovels were one.

Speaker 3

Boots were two.

Speaker 3

The blue jay was three.

Speaker 3

Slow down, Habibti.

Speaker 3

I want to hear them all.

Speaker 3

但现在

But right now

Speaker 1

Shh.

Speaker 3

Siti went to the window and opened it again.

Speaker 3

Listen, she said.

Speaker 3

Outside, the late blue afternoon was completely still.

Speaker 3

Quiet is the tenth way to hear snow.

Speaker 3

结束。

The end.

Speaker 2

Oh, the quiet is so calming.

Speaker 2

I almost don't wanna break it.

Speaker 1

This book is a beautiful reminder of how powerful it is to listen.

Speaker 1

Kathy, what inspired you to write this story?

Speaker 3

Well, I grew up in Wisconsin, and we had very snowy winters.

Speaker 3

I loved how an overnight snowfall transformed everything and how a blanket of snow makes everything quieter so you can actually hear more.

Speaker 1

That's really true.

Speaker 1

It makes everything so peaceful and calm.

Speaker 1

It really does.

Speaker 2

Kathy, did your own grandmother cook with grape leaves like siti in the story?

Speaker 3

Yes, she did.

Speaker 3

I remember seeing her doing it, and my mom helped to write down the recipe because I was pretty little.

Speaker 3

But the other thing I remember is she had big grapevines growing in her garden, and when we were little, we would get sent out to pick them.

Speaker 3

And we were always told to pick leaves about the size of our little hands cause they would be the most tender.

Speaker 2

Oh, how fun!

Speaker 2

And it sounds delicious!

Speaker 1

It really does.

Speaker 1

Well, thank you, Kathy, for sharing your book with us today.

Speaker 3

It was my pleasure.

Speaker 3

And now it's back out into the rain for me.

Speaker 2

Oh, stay dry.

Speaker 3

I'll try.

Speaker 3

And I bet there are 10 ways to hear rain too, don't you think?

Speaker 1

Yes, I do.

Speaker 1

Bye bye, Kathy.

Speaker 2

再见。

Bye.

Speaker 2

再见。

Bye.

Speaker 2

See you soon.

Speaker 2

Sometimes when I'm feeling overwhelmed, I just listen really closely to the sounds around me and it calms me down.

Speaker 1

Kathy: Let's try it now.

Speaker 1

What did you just hear, listeners, in our world and in yours?

Speaker 1

Was it an airplane overhead, A bird chirping?

Speaker 1

Someone talking in the background?

Speaker 2

Or maybe just the rain on the windowpane here in the library.

Speaker 1

Sometimes I like to listen like this when I first wake up in the morning, Before I do anything else, like reading the news or checking my phone, I just sit quietly and listen.

Speaker 1

Listeners, why don't you try it sometime?

Speaker 2

Maybe you could write a poem about all the sounds you hear.

Speaker 2

Oh, and if you do, please

Speaker 1

share it with us.

Speaker 1

I'd love to read what you write.

Speaker 2

We'll be back in just a moment with another great book.

Speaker 1

What about you, mom?

Speaker 1

Well, I love writing funny poems.

Speaker 1

If something makes me smile or laugh, I like to see if I can write a poem about it.

Speaker 2

That's true.

Speaker 2

One of my favorites is that one you wrote about the giraffe.

Speaker 1

Oh, you mean a giraffe poked his head in my window and my heart leapt into my mouth.

Speaker 1

I couldn't think of a thing to say.

Speaker 1

So he licked my nose and headed south.

Speaker 1

I thought, as I groped for my hanky and I passed this on to you, that if a wild animal comes to call, say a tiger or meerkat or roo, if like me you want him to stay or even come back another day, then perhaps it would really pay to say, welcome and how do you do?

Speaker 2

Yes, I love that poem.

Speaker 2

I think it's wonderfully silly.

Speaker 1

Yes, it is silly.

Speaker 1

And speaking of wonderful, it's time for

Speaker 0

wonderful, wonderful, wonderful words.

Speaker 2

There are so many wonderful words.

Speaker 2

Some of them conjure up a lovely image, like the word glisten from Daniel Hears a Poem.

Speaker 2

It means to sparkle or shine like morning dew on the grass.

Speaker 1

And then some wonderful words are simply fun to say, like hush.

Speaker 1

I love saying the word hush very quietly because it makes me feel the meaning of the word.

Speaker 1

Try it.

Speaker 1

Hush.

Speaker 1

See?

Speaker 1

Yes.

Speaker 1

That just gave me the chills.

Speaker 1

Emma, why are we still whispering?

Speaker 1

I I don't know.

Speaker 2

Speaker 0

发音。
