So something funny happened right before I started recording.

今天的嘉宾本该是塞巴斯蒂安熊。

My guest today was supposed to be Sebastian the bear.

他是只可爱的缅因州东部小黑熊。

He he's this sweet little eastern black bear who lives up in Maine.

他叔叔是个大人物，有架直升机，所以今早专程飞来录音棚见我。

His uncle is some kind of big shot and has a helicopter, so he flew down this morning and met me at my studio.

今天的故事关于熊准备冬眠。

Our story today is about a bear getting ready for hibernation.

我本希望塞巴斯蒂安能告诉我们他如何准备冬眠。

So I was hoping Sebastian could tell us how he gets ready to hibernate.

但是他睡着了。

But he fell asleep.

他现在正睡在我工作室的地板上。

He is currently sleeping on the floor of my studio.

Let me try one more time to wake him up.

你们能帮我一下吗？

Can you guys just help me?

We're gonna whisper his name.

Sebastian.

伙计们，他彻底倒下了。

Guys, he is down for the count.

我觉得他醒不过来了。

I don't think he's gonna wake up.

我该在九月份录这段的，照现在这情形，他怕是要在我工作室里开始冬眠了。

I should have recorded this in September because at this point, I think he just started his winter hibernation in my studio.

好吧。

Okay.

Let me let me just get some background for you.

Okay.

显然，黑熊每年要冬眠三到八个月。

Apparently, black bears hibernate for between three and eight months out of the year.

为此它们需要大量进食增加体重，因为在冬眠期间它们完全不吃东西。

To prepare for that, they have to eat a lot of food and put on a lot of weight because during their hibernation, they don't eat at all.

挺酷的吧？今天我们讲的故事叫《大熊的长眠》。

Pretty cool, Well, our story today is called Bear's Big Sleep.

Here we go.

It was November.

细小脆硬的独木舟从枝头飘落地面，划出旋转的芭蕾舞步。

Tiny, crisp canoes sailed from branches to the ground, tracing pirouettes twirling round.

红、橙、黄三色树叶无声飘落，轻触森林地面。

Red, orange, yellow leaves falling down, hitting the forest floor without a sound.

一片皱巴巴的棕色树叶轻触熊的鼻尖。

A crinkly brown leaf touched upon Bear's nose.

他轻轻甩开了它。

He flicked it away.

他今天很忙。

He was busy today.

几周以来，他一直忙得团团转，觅食、咀嚼、填饱肚子，把各种美味都塞进肚子里。

For weeks, he'd been in a tizzy, foraging, munching, filling his tummy, stuffing himself with everything yummy.

觅食的最佳时间是黄昏时分，那昼夜交替的时刻。

The best time to forage was at dusk, twilight, that time of day that's on the cusp of night.

是的，黄昏时分最理想，但这些日子，在他即将进入冬眠之前，熊可没时间按部就班了。

Yes, twilight was the best, but these days, the ones right before his big sleep, Bear couldn't afford to have a schedule to keep.

现在他整天都在外面，甚至中午也在不停地吃啊吃，因为他的长眠即将到来。

Now he was out at all hours, even at noon, eating and eating, for his big sleep would come soon.

不再和兔子野餐。

No more picnics with rabbit.

不再和狐狸聚会。

No more parties with fox.

不再和鹿儿在岩石上跳跃。

No more jumping with deer down on the rocks.

熊已经好几周没和他的朋友们——他亲爱的朋友们一起在森林里嬉戏了，因为季节即将结束，而熊不确定他们是否明白。

It had been weeks since Bear had romped through the wood with his friends, his dear friends, because soon the season would end, and Bear wasn't sure they understood.

兔子、狐狸、灰松鼠、猫头鹰、鹿。

Rabbit, fox, gray squirrel, owl, deer.

不，他们不太清楚为什么熊不能参加他们的聚会，为什么他每时每刻都在吃浆果和嫩枝。

No, they weren't quite clear on why Bear couldn't attend their shindigs and why he spent every moment eating berries and twigs.

他们当然也做了准备。

They certainly gathered.

他们囤积了食物，但他们并不太在意时间的流逝，不在意天气的变化，不在意每一阵微风中的新寒意。

They beefed up their food stocks, but they weren't quite as concerned by the time on their clocks, of the shift in the weather, the new chill in each breeze.

No.

They took it in stride.

They adjusted with ease.

但小熊忧心忡忡，感到时间紧迫。

But Bear worried and felt hurried.

它想念那些聚会，想念朋友们，多希望在季节结束前还能抽空去树林里嬉戏。

And he missed the parties, and he missed his friends, and he wished he could find time to spend to romp in the wood before season's end.

与此同时，附近的洞穴里，兔子开始点名。

Meanwhile, in a nearby hole, rabbit began to call roll.

松鼠，到。

Squirrel, here.

猫头鹰，鹿，到。

Owl, deer, here.

狐狸，到。

Fox, here.

朋友们，我叫你们来是为了策划一个活动。

Friends, I've called you here to plan an event.

你们都见过小熊了。

You've all seen Bear.

你们能看出他精疲力尽了

You can see he's spent.

他一直忙着进食

He's been so busy eating.

连抬头打招呼的力气都没有

He barely lifts his head in greeting.

我们和他相处的时光转瞬即逝

Our time with him is fleeting.

很快他就要进入冬眠期

Soon, he'll enter his big sleep.

接下来三个月、五个月甚至更久，我们都听不到他的动静

And from him, we won't hear a peep for three months, five months, maybe more.

那时我们不再受欢迎登门拜访

We won't be welcome at his door.

只能留他独自在那里打鼾

We'll have to leave him there to snore.

所以让我们在他结茧前赶紧办个派对吧。

So let's throw a party soon before he slips into his cocoon.

兔子看向他所有的朋友们。

Rabbit looked to all his friends.

是的，狐狸说道。

Yes, Fox said.

在季节结束前办个派对。

A party before the season ends.

猫头鹰鸣叫。

Owl hooted.

举办一场美食盛宴，让熊能好好歇歇脚。

A party with lots of food to eat so Bear can take a load off his feet.

朋友们都兴奋地点头，迫不及待要为他们的朋友熊准备这场丰收派对。

The friends all nodded, excited to prepare this harvest party for their friend Bear.

接下来的几天忙碌而模糊：熊四处奔波，狐狸抓了些鳟鱼，松鼠采集橡果，兔子摘浆果时避开荆棘，鹿用鲜嫩的青草做了沙拉，而猫头鹰则熬制糖用甜菜来制作糖浆。

The next few days were a blur as Bear hurried about, and Fox caught some trout, and squirrel gathered acorns, and rabbit picked berries while avoiding the thorns, and deer made a salad of fresh grasses, while Owl cooked some sugar beets to make molasses.

朋友们聚在一起整理他们的收获，为拥有如此丰富的食物而欢欣鼓舞。

The friends then met to assemble their cache and delighted in having such an abundance dash.

他们跳着舞互相击掌庆祝。

They danced around giving high fives.

这些食物比他们一生中见过的还要多。

It was more food than they'd seen in all their lives.

是时候了，兔子说道。

It's time, Rabbit said.

我们过去给他看看这丰盛的宴席吧。

Let's go get there and show him this spread.

猫头鹰被派去当中间人，因为他既善于说服又敏锐。

Owl was sent as the go between, for he was both persuasive and keen.

其他动物知道他能让熊放松下来，说服他穿过树林暂时放下觅食，这是其他动物自认做不到的。

The others knew he'd put Bear at ease and convince him to follow through the trees and leave his foraging for a spell, something the others knew they wouldn't do as well.

于是猫头鹰飞走了，很快找到了熊，他看起来孤独疲惫、憔悴不堪。

So Owl flew off and swiftly found Bear, who looked forlorn and tired and the worse for wear.

但熊成功增重了，猫头鹰对他壮实的状态印象深刻。

But Bear had succeeded in putting on weight, and Owl was impressed by his heavier state.

熊啊，他停在树桩上叫道。

Bear, he cried as he perched on his stump.

你的辛勤付出有了回报。

Your hard work has paid off.

你看起来相当圆润了。

You're looking quite plump.

熊露出微笑说道，谢谢你，朋友。

Bear cracked a smile and said, thank you, friend.

但在季节结束前我还得吃更多。

But I must eat even more before season's end.

我的冬眠期快到了，我已经开始犯困了。

My big sleep is nearly here, and I'm getting quite sleepy.

但我必须坚持下去。

But I must keep going.

必须再吃一口。

Must always eat another bite.

熊转身蹒跚离去，知道自己没时间玩耍。

Then Bear turned to lumber away, knowing he had no spare time to play.

但猫头鹰飞下来挡在了他的路上。

But Owl flew down and perched in his way.

熊，我来告诉你一个盛宴的好消息，那里有能让许多野兽饱餐的美味佳肴。

Bear, I come to you with news of a wonderful feast, a collection of treats that could feed many a beast.

我今天刚发现的。

I came upon it just today.

我带你去看看。

I'll show it to you.

跟我往这边走。

Come right this way.

熊盯着猫头鹰，皱起了眉头。

Bear eyed Owl and furrowed his brow.

哦，小熊，猫头鹰轻声说道。

Oh, Bear, Owl said gently.

来吧。

Come now.

我们走吧。

Let's go.

你可以在享用最后一餐时休息。

You can rest while you eat your last meal.

快点。

Come on.

别逼我编套说辞。

Don't make me come up with a spiel.

走吧，亲爱的朋友。

Let's go, dear friend.

你可以在季节结束前享受最后的时光。

You can savor your last hours before season's end.

熊思考了片刻，然后耸了耸它宽厚的肩膀，接着跟随猫头鹰越过倒下的树木和巨石，一路上打着哈欠，微微喘息，一英里又一英里。

Bear thought for a moment, then shrugged his big shoulders, then followed Owl over fallen trees and boulders, yawning all the while and panting a bit, mile after mile.

最终，他们到达了离熊巢不远的一片空地。

Finally, they reached a clearing not far from Bear's den.

猫头鹰发出响亮的'呼呼'声，然后狐狸冲了出来，拖出一条又一条鳟鱼。

Owl gave a loud, whoop whoop, and then fox bolted out, dragging trout after trout.

松鼠带来了橡果，兔子带来了浆果，鹿带来了青草，猫头鹰取来了糖浆。

Squirrel brought the acorns, rabbit the berries, deer brought the grasses, and owl fetched the molasses.

他们开始唱歌，而熊只是站在那里，咧嘴笑着。

They all started singing, and Bear just stood there, grinning.

熊感到一滴泪水滑落脸颊。

Bear felt a tear slide down his cheek.

它高兴得几乎说不出话来。

He was so happy, he could hardly speak.

‘这些都是为我准备的’，它终于开口说道。

All this for me, he finally said.

这一切都是为我准备的，这丰盛的宴席？

All this for me, this wondrous spread?

松鼠开玩笑说，我们想着你可能会分享。

Well, Squirrel joked, we thought you might share it.

是的，熊大笑着回应。

Yes, Bear laughed.

我想我可以分给大家。

I think I can spare it.

大家相互拥抱，然后热情地享用美食。

There were hugs all around, and they all ate with zeal.

多么美好、丰盛又温馨的一餐啊。

What a lovely, scrumptious, friendly meal.

他们还没开始品尝兔子的浆果派时，鹿突然说，嘿，看看我们的伙伴。

But they hadn't even started in on rabbit's berry pie when Deer said, hey, look at our guy.

大家转头看去，只见他们疲惫的朋友熊，闭着眼睛在季节的尾声里打起了呼噜。

They all turned to see Bear, their tired friend, with eyes both closed, snoring at season's end.

朋友们齐心协力，当晚抬起小熊送他回家。

Together, the friends combined their might, and they lifted Bear and carried him home that night.

当他们抵达熊的洞穴时，星光璀璨。

The stars shone brightly as they reached his den.

因为他们知道再也见不到他了，便轻声告别，承诺会告诉他发生的一切。

And because they knew they wouldn't see him again, they whispered goodbyes and promised to fill him in on everything.

然后他们为春天设好闹钟，走进森林迎接冬季的到来。

Then they set his alarm clock for spring and went out into the forest to see what winter would bring.

塞巴斯蒂安还在睡觉呢，伙计们。

Sebastian is still asleep, guys.

但就在我讲故事时，他一定做了个好梦，因为他毛茸茸的脸上露出了微笑，还揉着肚子像是在回味最后一餐。

But as I was telling the story, he must have been having a good dream because he got this little smile on his furry face, and he was rubbing his tummy like he was thinking back to his last meal.

唉。

Ugh.

我也累了。

I'm tired too.

我想我该睡觉了。

I think I'm ready for bed.

你知道，我不太喜欢冬天，所以冬眠听起来挺不错的。

You know, I'm not a huge fan of winter, so hibernation sounds pretty awesome to me.

虽然你可能无法冬眠，但今晚睡觉时可以假装自己在冬眠。

And you may not be able to hibernate, but you can pretend to hibernate when you go to sleep tonight.

所以晚餐一定要吃饱，这样你就能睡整个冬天。

So make sure you fill your belly up at dinner so you can sleep all winter.

我是说，一整晚。

I mean, night long.
