I imagine a bird who's fallen into the water and the wings are wet, and it's trying to stay afloat.

Of course, it's just a bird brain that it forgot about flying.

That bird lying in that water, if the water is still and calm and pleasant, the bird is sunbathing.

If the water begins to become choppy, wavelets, disturbances, water gets over the head of the bird and into the mouth and it's hard.

And so the bird struggles to stay above the ripples.

And of course, if it becomes tumultuous, stormy, it's very, very difficult, very, very difficult for that bird.

It's been through that numerous times and it's almost drowned completely.

It's even gone down a few times.

And so the bird, if it had its way, would keep the water calm, would have it be comfortable and have it be peaceful.

Because it has to think that.

Because it needs the water to be still.

And it can't exist thinking it has no control over this.

So somehow it even gets in I know it sounds so silly it gets into the spot where it found out once that it was chirping a little bit because the water was nice, right?

And the water stayed nice.

And that when it wasn't paying attention and looking a little bit to the right, the water got choppy.

And so it developed all these concepts and views and opinions and preferences in its head that if I look to the right, don't do that because the water will get choppy.

And if I do this and trip just right and every once in a while it works, you understand that, okay?

And you come to discuss things with this bird, you don't want to have a discussion with this bird.

这只鸟脑子里想的都是:哇,你是怎么得出这个结论的?

What this bird's got going on in their mind is like, Wow, where did you get there?

答案其实非常简单。

And the answer is very straightforward.

Speaker 1

我必须做点什么。

I had to do something.

Speaker 1

我不能感到无助。

I couldn't feel helpless.

Speaker 1

我不能觉得自己无能为力。

I couldn't feel like there was nothing I could do.

Speaker 1

我不会再沉溺了。

I ain't drowning anymore.

Speaker 1

我不想沉下去。

I don't want to go under.

Speaker 1

天啊,当我做错事时,整个汹涌的海洋和水变得可怕又令人窒息。

My God, when I do these things wrong, the whole tumultuous ocean and water gets amazing and drowning.

Speaker 1

I better make sure I never do that again, cause I'll get completely freaked out.

And when I do things right, when I think right and chirp right and look right and do everything right, the water gets calm and still and I needed to do that, right?

Because I can't always figure out why if I chirped exactly the way I chirped last time, I must not have it right.

There must have been something, past life or something that has affected this.

这就发展出了整套关于业力、关于前世行为的理论。

It developed this whole thing about karma, about things it did before.

It's very complicated.

它前世做过什么,所以即使现在叫对了也没用,会被前世那些事抵消掉之类的。

It did something before so that even if it chirps, right, it doesn't matter now because it was offset by these past things and all that kind of stuff.

然后这整套前世理论,其实是另一只漂过的鸟告诉她的。

Then really this whole past life thing, somebody came along, another bird that was floating along told her about that.

Speaker 1

那根本不是你这次做的事。

That's not even what you did this time.

Speaker 1

可能是你上次做的事。

It could be what you did last time.

Speaker 1

所以现在你要去弄清楚。

So now you're going figure that out.

Speaker 1

对这只鸟来说确实非常困难。

And it really is very difficult for this bird.

Speaker 1

这只鸟正经历着非常、非常艰难的时期。

This bird is having a very, very hard time.

Speaker 1

特别是当水面变得汹涌时,鸟儿要挣扎着保持漂浮已经够难了,现在它还感到内疚。

Especially, it's hard enough that when the water gets tumultuous that the bird has to struggle to stay afloat, now he feels guilty.

Now the bird feels, What did I do wrong?

It's just the most amazing thing.

Speaker 1

And the bird finally figures, I can't figure this out by myself.

It's unbelievable.

I know I'm causing this, but I can't figure it out.

Right?

Speaker 1

也许有另一种力量能帮我控制这个局面。

Maybe there's another force that can control this for me.

Speaker 1

我听说过有更高级的力量存在。

I've heard rumors that there was a higher force.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

我要向它祈祷。

I'll pray to that.

Speaker 1

他们请求那股力量让我所做之事奏效,让水面恢复平静。

And they ask that force to make it so that what I'm doing works and makes the water right.

Speaker 1

这只鸟的全部生命、每一刻,甚至对更高力量的祈祷,都是为了控制水。

And this entire bird, every life, every moment, even the prayers to the higher force are about controlling the water.

Do you understand that?

Speaker 1

Every single thing that bird is doing is about the fact that I'm stuck.

Speaker 1

他甚至不知道自己被困在水中,因为他不知道自己可以脱身。

He doesn't even know he's stuck in the water because he doesn't know he can get out.

I'm too busy thinking about how to make the water calm and do things right and all that.

There's not one part of my mind that has any idea that there's something other than being in this water.

Speaker 1

我就是这水。

I am this water.

Speaker 1

我就在这水里。

I am in this water.

Speaker 1

这就是我的生活。

That is what my life is.

Speaker 1

我能感受到。

I feel it.

Speaker 1

你不能说我不是——每次水动,我就漂浮。

You can't tell me I'm not every time it moves, I float.

Speaker 1

这就是我。

This is me.

Speaker 1

你明白了。

You got it.

Speaker 1

这种处境。

This situation.

Speaker 1

我向你发誓,这毫不夸张地正是一个人如何依托其心灵的状态。

I swear to you that is exactly with no exaggeration how a human being rests on their mind.

Speaker 1

心灵从来就不是你的本质。

The mind is not who you are ever.

Speaker 1

就像水从来不是那只鸟的本质一样。

Just like that water is not who that bird is ever.

Speaker 1

无论那水如何变化,平静还是汹涌,它都不比任何其他东西更代表那只鸟。

No matter what that water is doing, whether it's calm or there's tumultuous, it is no more that bird than any other.

Speaker 1

你明白这一点。

You understand that.

Speaker 1

那只鸟独立于水面,与水分离。

The bird is independent and separate from that water.

Speaker 1

它漂浮在水上,但并不属于水的一部分。

It is floating on it, but it is not part of it.

It has nothing to do with it.

你的意识,你的存在觉知,正漂浮在心灵的涟漪之上。

Your consciousness, your awareness of being is floating on the rippets of the mind.

Speaker 1

在瑜伽中,我们称之为‘心绪波动’。

In yoga we call them vrittis.

Speaker 1

如果你深入且足够静默,你会看到心中确有‘心绪波动’。

Will if you go deep enough and quiet enough, you'll see there are 'Vrittis' in the mind.

When a thought gets created, it starts as a tiny vibration and then it's like a wavelet, it comes up and it but those thoughts, those wavelets talk to you.

And you're right there just like you would see the wavelets on a lake.

Do you see them?

Speaker 1

They have start, finish, and so on.

They come up, they go down.

Speaker 1

That is what your thoughts do.

They are in a calm mind.

The mind is calm.

The water is calm.

如果没有外力作用,没有任何影响水面的因素,它就是平静的。

If there are no forces, none influencing the water, it's calm.

Speaker 1

如果没有落叶飘入,没有风吹过,没有雨滴落下,你能理解吗?

If there are no leaves falling in, if there's no wind blowing over it, if there's no rain falling into it, do you understand that?

水的自然状态是平静的,除非有外力使其改变。

The natural state of the water is calm unless there are forces that are causing it to be otherwise.

Fair enough?

Speaker 1

你的心智完全一样。

Your mind is exactly the same.

It is calm.

Speaker 1

It is it's not it's just calm.

这就是佛教所说的空性。

It's what Buddhists mean void.

空心并不意味着愚钝。

The empty mind doesn't mean it's stupid.

Speaker 1

水不会因为平静就变得愚钝。

The water is not stupid because it's calm.

Speaker 1

它并非不是水。

It's not not water.

Speaker 1

它具备产生波浪的所有潜质。

All the potentials are there for it to create waves.

Speaker 1

只是目前没有外力促使这种情况发生。

It's just there are no forces causing that to happen.

你心灵的天然状态是完全的平静。

The natural state of your mind is complete peace.

Absolute, total calm.

Not thinking nice things.

It's way beyond positive thought.

Positive thought is just a nice wave.

Negative thought is a tumultuous wave.

It's empty.

Speaker 1

这就是佛教所说的。

That's the Buddhist.

That's what Zen talks of.

空心,空钟,虚空。

Empty mind, the empty bell, the void.

Speaker 1

这并不意味着那里什么都没有,而是指里面什么都没有。

It doesn't mean there's nothing there, it means there's nothing in there.

所以心灵的自然状态是平静的水面。

So the natural state of the mind is the calm water.

Speaker 1

It's just absolutely still.

Want to get off subject but Ramakrishna, the great master, once said, The purified mind is no different than the self.

It's very, very deep.

When the mind is calm, it's like empty set.

Speaker 1

那里除了自我觉知的意识外空无一物。

There's nothing there but the consciousness aware of itself.

If you look into the absolute still water, you will see your reflection.

Speaker 1

It doesn't happen when there's ripples.

So they use that example.

When you are in deep meditation, when you're in deep meditation, you don't know you are, not till you come back, then you knew you're in deep meditation.

But if you're in deep meditation, there is no mind.

它不会产生任何念头。

It's not creating thoughts.

You're not sitting there thinking, Oh, I'm in deep meditation.

那样的话你就不是在深度冥想了。

Then you're not in deep meditation.

Speaker 1

存在的只有纯粹的存在感。

There's only the sense of being.

而我在想,我正在存在着。

And I'm thinking, I'm being ing.

不,你只是存在着。

No, you're just being.

Speaker 1

而心智不会干扰或将你从那种状态中拉离。

And the mind is not disturbing or pulling you away from that.

这就是其含义。

That's what's meant.

Speaker 1

纯净的心智与自我并无二致。

The purified mind is no different than the self.

Speaker 1

并非自我在观察一个纯净的心智。

It's not like the self is watching a pure mind.

Speaker 1

没有任何事物将你的意识从存在的觉知中抽离。

There's nothing pulling your consciousness away from your awareness of being.

Speaker 1

你明白吗?

Do you understand that?

即使你通过心智休息,你也只是觉知着存在本身。

You're just aware of being even though you're resting through the mind.

Speaker 1

那是空寂的,空无的心智。

It's empty, empty mind.

Speaker 1

因此,禅宗所说的空心、空铃与虚空与其他传统并无不同,这很美妙。

So it's beautiful that the Zen stuff of empty mind and empty bell and void is no different than any of the other traditions.

They just use different words.

关键在于你就是你。

The key is you are you.

Speaker 1

你是那只鸟,是自我,是意识,是存在的觉知,你正栖息于心念之上。

You are the bird, the self, the consciousness, the awareness of being and you are resting on mind.

The problem is your mind is never still, never still.

倘若你难得进入一次深度冥想,或许能理解何为静止的心。

If you go maybe once in a blue moon into a deep meditation, you understand what still mind is.

否则我要告诉你,只要你留心观察,就会发现心念总在泛起涟漪。

Otherwise, I am telling you if you will pay attention your mind is always creating ripples.

总在泛起涟漪。

Always creating ripples.

这真是难以置信。

That's unbelievable.

Like I said, not until you've experienced absolute still mind can you experience the fact that the mind is not still Because you're so used to it.

The mind is always saying, Well, I'm okay.

God, I like this situation.

This is the happiest time I've ever been alive.

That's mine.

Do you understand that?

千万别把心智想成负面的东西。

Don't you dare think of mind as the negative.

Right?

心智就是这些思绪,这些从湖面泛起的涟漪。

Mind are these thoughts, these wavelets that are coming out of this lake.

我喜欢观察你的心灵,你的内在状态。

I like to see your psyche, your inner state.

What I mean by psyche is the mind and the emotions.

That inner state.

A mind whose waves are steady.

It's always saying the same thing and because it's always saying the same thing they're of the same temperament, same thing.

It's easier to float on.

Do you understand that?

If your mind is sitting underneath saying, God, God or, that's all it's doing, that's a lot nicer place to rest than Oh my god, why did I say that?

Does your mind do that too?

So your mind is always creating these riplets.

Just like the bird has a very hard time when there's all this noise going on and the ripples in the waves, not to mention the tough times.

We understand how tough the tough times are.

Somebody dies, Jasmine leaves you, the sick gets sick, kid gets sick.

Speaker 1

All kinds of stuff goes on, doesn't it?

Speaker 1

And all of a sudden there's this tremendous turmoil.

Speaker 1

Can it get tumultuous?

Speaker 1

Answer me.
