There's a cool one coming up very soon about lower back health and about back health in general and how included in this podcast you can be more efficient to hit the golf ball further.
So watch out for that.
I'm sure you will enjoy the podcast with Thomas Malchai.
Anyhow, today, this is about improving your scoring and the best way to do that, as I said, is to improve yourself from inside of forty fifty yards.
That is where instantaneous score changing comes.
Oftentimes, and the disclaimer about this, it's not the easiest thing to practice.
It's not the most fun thing to practice.
It's certainly not the sexiest thing to practice.
I know it's more fun to go to the range and whip drivers away as far as you can or can or to tinker with your swing.
But if you wanna see a direct correlation to your golf score, improve inside 30 yards, and that is why this podcast is I've been looking forward to releasing it for so long.

Yes.
It's as passionate as those people are, I would think so.
好的。
Okay.
Let's delve into the short game.
But before we do that, James, I want you to introduce yourself to our global audience.
You know, I've sort of seen you from afar on the PGA tour from a long time, but let's get to know you.
First off, how did you come to where you are?
Well, after playing in college, I went to play those days, there was no web.comtour or Hogan tour or whatever.
So the players either went to South Africa or Asia or Europe or Australia.
And, so I went and played the Asian golf circuit for, four years and along with South America.
And, as a as a young man who didn't quite have the goods, when it was time to move on, I wasn't qualified for a whole lot else other than golf.
So, I I did what I knew best, which was was trying to make a life in in golf, coaching or teaching instead of playing.
And So that's where it started anyway.
And the short game.
I mean, obviously, you were a a proficient player in your own right, but was the graduation to an instructor of the short game expressly kind of a function of what you did well or more the fact that this intrigued you and you realized that, hold on, this is the way to really make inroads on your golf score?
Well, I I think it was the latter, really.
The the my interesting the the interesting part and my kinda my unique path, so to speak, to where I really started with the fact that my short game was it was fine.
It was, you know, it was average, I would say.
Mhmm.
But, when I quit, one of my brother's best friends was Sevi Balusteros when he he Yeah.
Played on tour.
He because he played in Europe for seven years before he played 11 on the PGA Tour, and had the opportunity on several occasions to, you know, go around with Sevi and watch it practice and whatnot.
所以
So
That'll open your eyes by
the It it it was awesome.
Yeah.
So so as as I began to open my own academy, I had about four months off, and one of the things I did is I went to the players championship to Katie for my brother and took a video camera.
In those days, it was kinda you had to rest on your shoulder.
Yeah.
I remember I remember those
days fondly.
没错。
Yeah.
It took two days of video, basically, of Seve hitting every kind of shot and Corey Paven and Raymond Floyd and all these great players.
And before I opened my door, so to speak, I thought, you know, I don't really know what proper fundamentals are.
I know that it's not, you know, lean left, keep your hands ahead, keep your head still because that that that's clearly not what Suri Balusteros was doing.
And so I just dive deep into the the footage, and I thought, well, whatever whatever I see on tape, I'll just wipe this slate clean, and that's what I'll teach.
And so I I didn't have a moment at that time going, oh, I'll specialize in the short game.
I'm gonna be this short game guru.
I just, like, had this amazing access to these these elite performers and realized soon after studying the tape that, wow.
All this stuff I've heard to do, that's not what they're doing.
They're doing, you know, nothing like this.
So that's where my my interest really peaked and where I I started to study deeply.
Hey.
Isn't that crazy?
Because you and I both have brothers that have been good professional golfers and successful.
But but you you you hear methodology, and you hear folks opine on stuff, then you go and watch the world's best, and I've had the good fortune of watching Sevii up close too.
I'll never forget an interaction I had with him and my brother in over in Munich at the BMW championship way back.
And there was little green Jeff Ogilvie was out there, and a lot of good short game guys.
And Sevi was nipping these sand wedges in there.
The only guy who could get them to stop, and just the technique was so different to what was kind of, taught at the time.
A 100%.
100% true.
Just not not only different, but nearly opposite of and and my theories on on how that happened are really twofold and and somewhat off topic, but, you know, back in the day, like, seventy had a 56 degree wedge.
That was all he had.
Yeah.
It's all he had.
没错。
Yeah.
And he he could make a dance.
He could hit it high.
He could check it.
He could do anything.
You know?
And then at some point, as the 60 degree wedge, became pro prevalent, and players now are pulling it out really when they shouldn't.
They're visualizing a low shot, and they're pulling out their 60.
You know, there's there's only one or two ways you can do it to pull that shot off.
So I always tell players, just listen.
If you have a if you have a, you know, 60 degrees meant to go straight up in the air.
And if you have a a 10 year old hotshot kid and you give him a a six degree wedge for his birthday present, you're, like, doing him a huge disservice.
He's has to learn to create trajectories and use the club the way it's intended, which would be to, you know, hit hit that lofted wedge up in the air.
And I don't know about you, but when I grew up, you know, I chipped with a pitching wedge.
And then in the sand, we used a sand wedge.
Mhmm.
And because of that, I developed hands and ability to use the club property and put it up in the air.
So a big Look.
Look.
Component of of that.
所以
So
Oh, yeah.
Absolutely.
And and it's why I see you being hired by so many folks in the PGA Tour.
You know, you share this anecdote about the sand wedge and the lob wedge, and and my eyes wanna start spouting blood when I see guys get this thing back in the stance, the hands way in front, they're digging the frontage of the club into the ground, and it's not performing like it should.
And I've had the good fortune over my career as an instructor to work with Larry Maes for a while as he was moving on to the PGA Tour Champions.
And he still only carries a sand wedge.
There's no lob wedge in there.
And just the creativity, I mean, is a guy who had probably the most recognizable pitch shot ever.
You you know, as you point out, being able to manipulate and hit different shots with this one club.
Yeah.
It's it's so important.
It really retards the growth for doing doing young people a real disservice.
And, you know, the real eye opener there's two eye openers at that time when I had the camera with Chevy, and I I I looked back to that.
We're on the third green, and he's hitting these little chips, and they're soft and rolling up, you know, like a a 35 foot little chip.
Mhmm.
And I was just trying to stay out the way, but I was also taking video.
And then when he put his club in his bag, it was, an eight iron.
And I was thinking, well, my pitching wedge is not coming out that soft.
He's got these beautifully soft little eight iron little off the edge chips.
And that's really if you you know how to use the club properly, you need less loft.
You need less bounce.
You need less loft.
You you know, the, if you can understand how and why the club was designed and use it that way, you know, it's more forgiving.
It's more versatile.
But you don't get the versatility by putting it behind your back foot and digging a trench.
You you get it by changing clubs if you need to to hit that low shot.
Isn't that just a conundrum?
Because you'll hear one guy oh, okay.
Let's let's just call this teacher a.
Right?
So he my his name might be Mark or whatever the case might be.
But he'll say to a student, an elite player or a more advanced player and go, well, the long irons, you need to hit them high, and the wedges, you need to hit them low.
Okay?
And then the next thing, you're trying to hit these lower wedges with the most lofted club in your bag.
It just doesn't make sense if you think about it from that point of a view.
Yeah.
I mean, was I always define a wedge shot by what the goal is.
So if you're saying the skill of value inside 20 yards, what is it?
Well, I'm gonna say it's a soft touch.
It's height.
It's spin.
It's being able to control the speed of the club.
Well, if if that's the case, you don't wanna hit it low.
You know?
And to hit it low, you gotta lean the shaft and rotate your body.
Mhmm.
Another hand so so that therefore, in that that type shot where you that flight is desired, the lower body is very passive and very creates stability, and the the club passes.
On the other hand, if I have a 75 yard shot and I wanna keep it a bit out of the wind, then I'm gonna control the the the face and the the strike more with body rotation.
So now we call that a distance wedge.
So the Yeah.
The kinematic sequence of a flighted, you know, 70 or 80 yard wedge is completely different than something from ten, twenty, or 30.
Hey.
That that that is a beautiful observation.
Let's drop the anchor and stay there for a little while because one of the questions I wanted to pitch to you, because your club golfer out here, again, we we we exist here to help them to do better.
I feel like they're gonna do better if they just get to control distance around the greens a little bit more proficiently.
So so let's stay right where you are because, you know, everyone thinks about holing, but you gotta get the correct correct distance on the thing to be more consistent.
What are your thoughts?
没错。
Yeah.
当然。
For sure.
I think the skill of value is is controlling distance, and that starts with consistent contact.
And so that's why mechanics are important.
But, honestly, as a coach, and I I'm I'm sure you would agree with this, is if you're saying, hey.
Come to me for a lesson.
I'll teach you how to swing.
You're you're literally teaching that person maybe 20% of the the the puzzle.
The other mechanics are important because you need the contact.
You need the control.
But what about how you walk into the ball to get your mind clear and committed?
What about what type of training you're doing to develop mental and physical skill?
And one of the things I've always tried to do in my lessons, if I think that mechanics are 20% of the the puzzle piece, then I'm gonna spend about 20% of the time on them, and we're going to work on, other things.
I mean, simple simple things that people don't do well, like breathing
Uh-huh.
Properly.
You know?
And it's funny, you know, with both having worked with tour players, a lot of times I'll get comments or even I thank you.
Now it's like, gosh.
You know, the most important thing you ever taught me was how to breathe.
How to how to walk into the ball with a little bit more confidence or or or whatnot.
So it's not always about technique.
I mean, it's certainly important, but it's it's not the only thing.
Well, look, you bring up such a good point because the majority of folks within earshot of this podcast are probably in a place where they get closer to the green, and they probably get more and more apprehensive and nervous, and and it is to me the great dilemma, is like, as you get close to the green, the shot should become easier, yet a lot of the folks listening to this, they like, minds are wracked with fear and tension and apprehension, and everything as they approach just a regular green side pitch over a bunker shot over a bunker.
Yeah.
100%。
100%.
And that's because they're they're concerning themselves with something they can't control, which is the outcome.
You know, if they could learn to focus their mind on on just what they have to do to execute and not worry about how it's gonna turn out and what it all means and if it's gonna be embarrassing or what it means to their legacy or, you know, all the things they think about it certainly should be easier.
Right?
Absolutely.
But I also feel like that's important where there's been so much misinformation over the years, and this kinda leads back to where we started, which is, the other reason besides people using too much loft around the green is that at some point, you know, this high handicapper's, you know, stopping their arms and their chest and flipping at it and scrolling across the green, and this somehow the solution to that became, hey.
Keep your hands ahead.
Well, that's that's just correcting an error with an error.
The real solution would be keep your arms moving and your chest rotating if need be, but it's certainly not to to create tension in your hands and hang on for dear life.
So You bring up such a good point there, and and you you used the term kinematic sequence earlier, and and I think and I want your take, please.
You're the guru.
A lot of folks struggle around the greens, and and I I wanna parlay this into a a smash factor question that we've had posed here before.
A lot of folks around the greens, they don't understand kind of the ratio of the club head swing to what the handle is doing to what the torso is doing.
So talk a bit about the timing of the action, you know, because there's there's huge misunderstandings in my opinion.
是的。
Yeah.
Well, I would I would agree.
Now one of the things that probably put me on the map originally is that I I had, when I I studied, you know, Corey Pavin and and Raymond Floyd and Seve, and other things I noticed and I'd written down in a notebook that I give every player is that how the sequence is different than a full swing and that when you get it wrong, this is this is these are the shot errors that tend to happen.
And at the Child's Performance Institute where I'm on the advisory board, doctor Rose and Dave Phillips had kinematic sequence, three d data on over a 110 players hitting 10 yard shots as as well as full swing.
And out of these a 110 players, there was a group that had kind of this unique, weird sequence.
If you look at the players Describe it first.
I'll I'll do that to you, but let me just tell you who the players were first.
It happened to be Luke Donald, Jeff Oglevy, Steve Stryker, Tom Pernice, Corey Pavin, Patrick Harrington, you know, all the
Best pitcher of the ball ever.
Players.
对。
Right.
对。
Right.
So that's where, you know, I I really hit my mark because Greg Rose read my notebook and said, hey.
You've just described to me exactly what I've been seeing on three d data and didn't quite understand what was going on.
And that the reality is at the top of your backswing, these elite wedge players at the start of their downswing, rather, there's the clubs at rest, their bodies at rest.
The club actually moves slightly faster than the lead arm in the transition or at least together, where there's no down could no down cocking or no flash of speed.
And the angles start to come out of their wrists because the club's moving slightly faster.
The the club moving, accelerating, actually decelerates the arm slightly there at the beginning.
And so the kinematic sequence of a full swing would be where the the chest is rotating first and faster than the arm while it flips because of the club dropping.
So the club goes, the arms going, now the arm and the chest kind of, match up Mhmm.
And kinda ride through together.
But if you think of the arm and the club, think about how much further they have to travel.
They have to move so much faster Mhmm.
To be linked up or to kinda so the club can stay in front of you.
Hey.
You sound like choirs of angels to me, and you know what it gets me thinking about as you as you share this?
Because I've spoken to Luke and Jeff Ogilvie.
We've had him on this podcast, and, I mean, he's like a symphony when he hits a wedge green side.
Brett Rumford is another one.
I think of Ernest Jones in his book, you know, Swing the Clubhead, where he had the the the the the pen knife attached to the handkerchief, and he was swinging it back and forth, and how you've gotta kinda wait with you to allow this pendulum to catch back up with you, and it's so appropriate to what you're describing.
Exactly right.
I mean, the reality is if if you're if that's a conceptual picture in your mind, think about what tension and No.
It's holding there.
Off the angles and all that does to that that motion.
It it ruins it.
You know?
We need around the greens, you need fluidity and rhythm and, you know, this unique sequence, I think, is impossible with tension or if you're trying to hit it super low, lower than what the club is designed and and all these things we've talked about.
Hey.
And also to that, I I I listened to things that could kinda throw the cat amongst the pigeons here, and certainly trying to hit the lofted wedge too far, because if you green side, and please share your opinions here, if you green side and you're practicing, you know, with a little late iron or whatever, you suddenly realize that any flashing speed, and you're gonna whip this thing way too far.
You gotta kinda sense the speed of the club more.
Exactly right.
A matter of fact, you're you're just hitting upon my favorite drill.
Oh, please, sir.
是的。
Yeah.
And my favorite drill, where you get these people at the flash of speed, they they down cock, they drive their legs, they they have no, softness.
And I I call it gathering speed where the club starts slowly.
It's picking up pace as it goes.
Mhmm.
Maximum velocity of the club head is actually a little past impact.
It's not Yeah.
Before at all.
And so I like to take I call it a short shot leapfrog game.
Mhmm.
And so imagine you take out your nine iron pitching wedge.
好的。
K.
And you put your balls down one foot from the edge of the green.
Okay?
Oh, yeah.
Now your your job is to hit it, the first ball, on the green, but as close to you close to the edge of the green and fringe as possible.
So, literally, you're taking this pitching wedge or nine iron, and you're hitting about a two and a half foot chip with it.
You barely move mean, it.
The the backswing is super slow motion.
It might be three or four inches long.
I'm always obviously doing this off kind of a nice clean tight lie.
The next shot just has to go, a little bit further than the first ball.
Then what you're gonna do is a leapfrog order, missing the balls as you go to a far target.
So I might put this alignment stick out there 25 feet away.
And the first ball has to be on the green, the next ball has to be past it but short of the stick, the next ball has to be past it, but short of the stick, and you're trying to see how many balls you can fit into the space.
Oh, I love it.
I saw IK Kim as one of my good, better students Mhmm.
Who's won the British Open this last year when it was British Open.
Mhmm.
Fit 17 balls into this space in leapfrog order, and it was her it's so incredibly impressive just the touch.
You know, she's hitting one ball six inches past the next, all with this little wedge.
And then if you just did this drill and you moved over to the side and you gave somebody a 15 foot chip, with a nine iron, and normally, they'd be going, oh, there's not enough room for nine iron.
All of a sudden, you just realize how much space there is to use this nine iron and hit this little short shot, and that's a real eye opener for a lot of people.
It's an awesome way to learn rhythm.
Man, I love it.
成交。
Deal.
I love it.
And I'll tell you what I I tell you what as as I listen to this, because I challenge folks at times, and this is for all players.
You know, I'm down in the Southeast, and you've got that Bermuda rift to deal with.
You gotta be able to get the club coming in on appropriate angle and and kinda landing in the right spots, that I think sometimes people, they get too fast in their downswing.
You know you know, they they actually accelerating, where sometimes around the green, just the mass of the club and the momentum of the thing are enough to move the ball the appropriate distance, and then the green can take care of the rest.
Yeah.
A 100%.
I mean, just like I said, if the skill value is height and spin and having a soft touch and controlling the speed of the club, that's exactly it.
I mean, gravity is your friend.
Just allow that club to just kinda to to fall on the ball.
And then, obviously, as you know, Augusta National is a special place to me and my family, and I had experience with Sevi over in Europe, but then watching Jose Maria around Augusta National, around those chipping venues off those lies, you can see what you're describing, how there's no hyper acceleration.
It's almost like the club, and I might sound there'll be folks tweeting me here.
It's almost like the club is guiding what the athlete is doing through contact on some of these touch shots.
没错。
Yeah.
Exactly.
That and that's where I get with with, like, what I call gathering speed.
It's kinda one of the terms I use.
It's like if you if you dropped it, it would start picking up speed and, you know, at some point, gravity's working on it.
It's going faster and faster and faster, but there's no visible over acceleration or I mean, it's just it it's falling.
Mhmm.
It's falling, picking up speed as it goes.
Hey.
Two okay.
Well, let's let's get let's get really in-depth with this now now because I know the folks are intrigued.
So now they wanna go and practice this thing, and and and you talked about, you know, you don't lean left too much with the ball back in the stance and the handle ahead.
So for this basic green side pitch shot that they might be practicing your touch drills, describe stance with, describe ball position, describe handle position, and kinda where the pressure is in the feet.
好的。
Alright.
So let me let me let's just define the shot.
Let's say fairway lie Okay.
10 yard 10 yard carry with a sandwich.
Mhmm.
And so you might have a 18 yard shot or something where you're just gonna, you know, simple bread and butter.
So so that stance should be very narrow.
对。
Yeah.
And the the narrower, the better because we're trying to really, to some extent, take the legs out of it.
The the role of the lower half in this type of shot is to provide balance and stability, aid in balance and provide stability.
Mhmm.
So, narrow stance are, like, open, both the lead foot pulled back and turned open if I if possible.
I want the chest open.
Mhmm.
And I'm gonna call it a a Bobby Jones left arm or lead arm.
If you look back to old days, I I like to show a video of Bobby Jones hitting little chips with the with nibble, which is a nine iron.
It was soft wood, man.
Oh, boys.
A ton of hip pins, soft elbows.
No so he's got I like this folded kind of lead arm around the corner, which opens the chest.
And at that point, it's it's, just very quiet, lower half, very reasonably quiet chest.
I mean, you're not restricting anything because that ruins rhythm, but you just, swing the club up, allow that trail arm elbow to fold a little bit, and then just let the club drop on the ball.
If the club's dropping on the ball, like I said, at some point, the the, lead arm and the chest will match up, and the chest kinda supports the release of the club through the bottom of the swing.
But it it shouldn't look, I mean, the guy that does it the best is is is my first, professional client.
I've I've I've been lucky enough to coach him for twenty five years.
But if you're out there, folks, and you have a chance to watch Tom Pernice hit some little center 15 yard pitch up, this is a symphony.
And he can just do anything with the ball.
So hopefully, I described that adequately.
Yeah.
You really did.
And and and it it's just opening up thousands of questions for me.
First off, you know, we've had a few experts on on this podcast before, and they speak of smash factor, and so a lot of folks are proponents then because of that, because as you get a straighter faced club in your hand, the smash factor heightens, so the ball comes off faster.
So there's not that one to one sort of ratio.
But the way you're describing this, you know, you can swing a pitching wedge, and you're doing this, and even though it's a less lofted club, and, in effect, more powerful, you can still get the golf ball coming off softly and not shooting away from one.
Right?
A 100%.
And it's just a function of, in my my opinion, great technique, and and we've we've gone backwards, Mark, over the decades.
Mhmm.
I have video of Ben Hogan, of Jimmy Demeritt, of, Bobby Jones hitting these little shots around the greens, and then it somehow you know?
I don't know how it morphed into lean left hands ahead.
Don't break down, but it it it but I think the pendulum has swung back.
I think there are more people in the camp now that people realize.
It's like, no.
That was that was all wrong.
That was like the golf machine or or whatever.
Well, look, to that, and you know, and okay, let's let the listener into a typical conversation on a PGA to a practice short game facility, right?
They get to a grainy place, and the first thing they're like, dang, this leading edge is sticking in the ground, and then the whole conversation is like, well, I need to expose the bounce of my loft club to the ground.
The only way you do that the only way you do that is if you do what you're saying.
Right?
是的。
Yeah.
That and and also club selection.
Like I said, I mean, if you you take out your 60 and you're just seeing a low shot, you you you got zero percent chance.
So one of the things you gotta do is you're gonna learn to use a little less loft and play a little higher than normal trajectory shot with it.
And and if if you keep it in that simple shot making terms, then it's I think it's reasonable the movement is reasonably intuitive.
确实。
Yeah.
It really is.
Hey.
I you you've already helped folks with your descriptions here, James.
I I just wanna take this to now because they've gotta go and practice this.
So so how do you advise, and it's very generic, I know, because of the variation and and the diversity of our audience, but but if you were with them and they were just going to go and practice, how would you advocate this?
Different lies block practice, what would you say?
Well, you gotta have something that you believe in from a foundational standpoint, and there are million you know, obviously, every student gets a little different drill or or whatnot to to get them moving properly.
Mhmm.
But let's just take, take for example your your your friend Jeff Ogilvie.
So let's say you went out, and you've you're the move that works for you is just, a little right arm only drill.
So you just rest your hand on your left leg, and you hit 10 little pitch shots, right arm only, just feeling the club swing, feeling it start first, feeling it pass.
Mhmm.
And after you did 10, now all of sudden, you take three or four clubs, and you just do a lap around the green.
You're hitting low shots, high shots, upslopes, downslope, you know, lies, and you're practicing your shot making skill, your decision making, and and how you walk into the ball.
So I always start with the block practice first.
It's like just a bit of a warm up to
Mhmm.
Think of the fundamentals, whether it's you know, like I said, everybody's are different, but it could be just ball position.
It could be the shaft lean.
You know?
And I would like to say one more thing.
When you you know, I didn't talk about shaft lean there, but the shaft should be leaning forward at setup for the most part unless you're into that in into the grain type Bermuda or whatnot.
But it's marginally so.
Right?
It's not as much as people think.
Well, I'm gonna say this.
Let's say it's six degrees, which which I would say is about normal.
好的。
Okay.
Here's the number one mistake amateur players make.
If you say if you said, hey, James.
What's the number one mistake When the shaft is sitting 90 degrees like it would a putter Mhmm.
And the leading edge of the club lines up with it, we'd call that square.
对。
Yeah.
Correct?
Mhmm.
Well, when people lean the shaft six degrees forward, the face should rotate right along with that
A little low.
And appear to be six degrees open.
是的。
Yes.
Exactly.
It needs to line up its shaft to be to square.
So when people lean the the the the thing that screws them up the most is they'll lean the handle a bit forward, let's say, of their zipper.
Mhmm.
But they'll hood the club face.
So it looks like it's pointing at the pin.
And then at that point, they're really in trouble.
Oh, man.
Then there's a jet
that's about to come out there.
It in, they hit it straight, and then they hang on to it, and then it's a dull so if I had one tip for everybody, so as you lean the shaft forward on a stock shot, that club face leading edge has to line up with the shaft.
So it needs to appear open, and good players play it square to the shaft or open to it.
Never hooded.
So that that's a big one to me.
That's super that that is super, super insight for the folks because, you know, what I sometimes see too because then they'll watch the professional and the pros crank that face wide open, and then they get the shaft a little forward.
So now you better be releasing and speeding up the club head.
Your club golfer doesn't, and then they wipe these little drippers off to the right hand side that are always short.
没错。
That that's right.
And that's really the kinematic sequence.
I mean, when you Mhmm.
You get the handle forward, you get the face way open, that lower body better be providing stability so the head of that club can be released or thrown, what I call hitting the bottom shaft.
Because otherwise, if you hang on to it and pull the handle at that scenario, all you can do is shank it out to the right or
Yeah.
Mhmm.
You know?
So so, yeah, the more open the face, the more the club's released, the more speed, the more spin, the more height.
And so that's where you're seeing these incredible shots on TV, but they're not certainly not doing what what would appear to be a a square closed club face.
Man, I love you so much.
This has been awesome stuff.

I mean, there are too many PGA tour guys that have got your own practice greens week in and week out.
That's true.

I love that leapfrog drill that he describes.
That is absolute gold because if you can develop sense in your hands you've heard people on this podcast speak about skill acquisition.
Well, acquisition, a lot of that is a function of awareness in your hands, an awareness between your hands, your body, your pivot, and the club face, and how those all work together in order for you to present that club face in a desired fashion to the golf ball.
So go and do that drill.
