I love this movie quite a bit, actually, and I'll say that without a single problem. Emma Seligman, since watching Shiva Baby and Rachel Senna are, like, indeed gems to me, I'm really appreciating that Emma was able to direct a movie this outlandish and ridiculous, and we've seen more and more Rachel since shivababy. Come on. Ayo. She's amazing, and there's no brighter star at the moment.

There are no rules in this world, and I think that's the point. It's heightened reality, and it isn't just for laughs. It's exposing it's exposing how ridiculous real high school lives and hierarchies are.

And that's a really interesting choice in a genre like this because it often treats queerness as an accessory instead of it being the main focus in how these characters move forward. Bottoms is not afraid to wink up the camera, but it never loses control. It walks a tightrope between being in on the joke and still letting the joke land. And that's the whole thing about this meta comedy.

It builds character instead of flattening it. Everyone gets heightened. Everyone gets a job. Everyone gets a task. And I think that's what makes this funny.

But if we're gonna talk about the fights, let's do it. They're not clean. Like, it doesn't feel like they're choreographed at all. Like, this is not a Marvel movie fight, and I think that's what makes it so great.

It's a manifestation of the rage we feel in real life and the emotions that these characters are going through.

In a world where women are told to be soft and accommodating, these girls screaming with their fists feels appropriate. I felt connected to it, and I imagine a lot of women did too. Beneath all the blood and jokes is a great tonal balance. It goes from absurd comedy to emotional honesty. Rachel and Ao do a great job of syncing up with each other.

And if you're a writer or director, I think this is a thing that you wanna study. Right? It's how you push genre boundaries without losing character. How do you get weird but stay grounded in emotional truth? It's one of those things that I think is a hard balance and the reason why a lot of films in this world feel flat.

Bottoms is required watching for all the reasons that I just said. It dares to be ridiculous but has a purpose. It's messy. It's queer. It's violent, and it's really, really smart.
