This isn't just a teen movie. This is Bottoms, where the football team is worshiped like Greek gods, the cheerleaders are emotionally feral, and the lesbians are trying to start a fight club to get laid. Welcome to the weirdest, sharpest, bloodiest coming of age story that you didn't know you needed. This is required watching where we watch the essential films from lists of cinematic influencers and look at them through the lens of learning about filmmaking and how to move forward. I'm Tre Epps, and I love this movie.

I love this movie quite a bit, actually, and I'll say that without a single problem. Emma Seligman, since watching Shiva Baby and Rachel Senna are, like, indeed gems to me, I'm really appreciating that Emma was able to direct a movie this outlandish and ridiculous, and we've seen more and more Rachel since shivababy. Come on. Ayo. She's amazing, and there's no brighter star at the moment.

This is a starting strong if you ask me. I think one of the boldest choices Bottoms makes is fully committing to to how absolutely absurd it is. There are no rules in this world, and I think that's the point. It's heightened reality, and it isn't just for laughs. It's exposing it's exposing how ridiculous real high school lives and hierarchies are.

Speaker 0

I think everything is dialed up to 11. The violence, joke delivery, sheer chaos, none of it feels random. The set tire is precise, I think. You're not just laughing. You're clocking exactly how broken the rules are of teenage society.

Speaker 0

Queerness in bottoms isn't just a subplot. It's the engine driving it forward. Josie and PJ are messy, selfish, chaotic, and lesbians. And I think that's important distinction. I mean, honestly, I kept thinking about super bad in the best possible way.

Speaker 0

It's been a while since we've had a movie like this, let alone a movie that's diverse. A a black lesbian? All about it. All about black lesbians and the premise of this entire film. I think it's refreshing.

Speaker 0

The lesbians, like, Josie and PJ are not sanitized, but they're also not tragic. They're not trying to be a moral compass. I think they're just being real teenagers. Of course, exaggerated, but still. The film doesn't try to make queerness palatable.

Speaker 0

It makes it messy and awkward just like how teenage lives are. And that's a really interesting choice in a genre like this because it often treats queerness as an accessory instead of it being the main focus in how these characters move forward. Bottoms is not afraid to wink up the camera, but it never loses control. It walks a tightrope between being in on the joke and still letting the joke land. And that's the whole thing about this meta comedy.

Speaker 0

It builds character instead of flattening it. Everyone gets heightened. Everyone gets a job. Everyone gets a task. And I think that's what makes this funny.

Speaker 0

And if you throw in the actions of these completely unhinged teenagers, I think you do still get this emotional connection, emotional stakes, and I think that's what makes the writing so good. But if we're gonna talk about the fights, let's do it. They're not clean. Like, it doesn't feel like they're choreographed at all. Like, this is not a Marvel movie fight, and I think that's what makes it so great.

Speaker 0

It's just this weird naturalistic way of fighting. Everything both feels heightened and exaggerated but also really natural. The fights are wild and scrappy and personal, and I think every punch says something, whether it's about insecurity, desperation, or identity. Violence is not just for shock value. It's a manifestation of the rage we feel in real life and the emotions that these characters are going through.

Speaker 0

In a world where women are told to be soft and accommodating, these girls screaming with their fists feels appropriate. I felt connected to it, and I imagine a lot of women did too. Beneath all the blood and jokes is a great tonal balance. It goes from absurd comedy to emotional honesty. Rachel and Ao do a great job of syncing up with each other.

Speaker 0

And if you're a writer or director, I think this is a thing that you wanna study. Right? It's how you push genre boundaries without losing character. How do you get weird but stay grounded in emotional truth? It's one of those things that I think is a hard balance and the reason why a lot of films in this world feel flat.

Speaker 0

Bottoms is required watching for all the reasons that I just said. It dares to be ridiculous but has a purpose. It's messy. It's queer. It's violent, and it's really, really smart.

Speaker 0

And it's the kind of movie that laughs at the system while showing you how to tear it down. I can see people thinking that this film doesn't work, but I challenge you to rewatch it if you haven't watched it yet and really take in what this movie is saying. If you want to know how far you can stretch genre and still say something real, then this is for you. What do you think? Do you think bottoms is too chaotic or is it just the right amount of unhinged?
