From mini hot pots to partitioned barbecue seats, the restaurant industry is reinventing itself for a generation that values both efficiency and emotional comfort. And attentions, everybody. There's a new craze in town, gold panning. From young couples to families with kids, people are trading beach towels to buckets. They might not leave rich, but they leave smiling with a memory, a photo, and maybe a speck of gold. Why has this hands on muddy pastime become the latest golden travel trend?

Yeah. A little a little anxious, especially after being so used to dining alone like the rest of the a 125,000,000 people living alone here in China, and that's what's going on nowadays. The number is still growing. And, also, a CCTV finance report lately indicate that the solo dining market already hit 800,000,000,000 yuan in 2024 and could break 1,000,000,000,000 next year with an estimated compound annual growth rate of about 22%. That's massive.

I wonder yeah. My first question is because we know that a lot of people will get roommates in China too. Right? So it might be common for a couple or three strangers to live together. But I wonder if that house with three strangers living together would be included in the 125,000,000 or not.

Because those three people living together would live kind of solo lives, I would if you see my point.

They would contribute to the rising rates of people eating alone in restaurants.

Yes. But you do see the market size of leading alone being already very massive and still growing, not only the ones that Yushan has already mentioned. Even if for takeouts, you see that for those kind of platforms that or the kind of restaurants that labeled with solo dining tag, they have seen a 26 increase in orders. Right?

所以当你打开手机APP点餐时，会看到有个单人用餐的小标签可以点击，然后他们会为你展示单人份餐食。

So that's when you open up the app on your phone to order some food. There you'll see a solo dining little tab there that you can click, and then they'll show you meals for one.

对我来说，如果线上餐厅没有开设单人用餐这个小分类，我就会觉得这家店不够包容、不够主流或者说不够高端。

For for me, if online if a restaurant doesn't open that little category of one we're solo dining, then I'll consider this one not as inclusive and major or or as higher end as

我就不会点。我没那么浪漫。因为对我来说，单人用餐意味着食物种类和份量都更合适。当然可以多点一些。

I would order from. I'm not that romantic. The reason is that for me, if it's solo dining, it means that the variety of the food, the proportion of the food is more suitable for solo dining. Sure. Can order a bit more.

点个两三道菜可能有点多，但还不至于让我觉得'啊这些得吃一整天'。

Having a bit, like, more than two or three dishes, maybe a bit too much, but to still not feeling that, ah, I have to eat this for the entire day.

没错。因为很多餐厅主打的是共享用餐体验对吧？点餐时很多菜品都是两三人份甚至更多。

Yeah. Because a lot of the food you go to a restaurant, a lot of there's a lot of shared dining. Right? Shared dining experiences. So when you order food, a lot of the times, the dishes will be for two or three people or sometimes more.

所以我认为保留那些标签很重要，这样人们就能明白，哦，原来可以点单人份的餐食。嗯，如果我看看这家餐厅提供什么。

So it is important, I think, to to have those tabs there because it allows people to know, oh, okay. I can get an individual sized meal Mhmm. If I check out what this restaurant has to offer.

Yes. So food delivery, relatively simple. You can eat by yourself or others. But if you're eating outside, you're eating in a eatery, in a restaurant, What are some places that are more suitable for solo dining?

这种现象其实随处可见。比如拉面店就是这一趋势的明显先驱。在中国南方的深圳市福田区，你会发现下班后的上班族在提供单人套餐的拉面连锁店排队。这种形式高效、实惠，专为单人设计。根据我们的调查，许多这类餐饮连锁店都位于深圳。

Well, it's really happening all across the places. Ramen shops, for example, are is one of the obvious pioneers in this endeavor. In Shenzhen's Futian District, for example, that's in Southern China, the city of Shenzhen, you'll find office workers lining up after work at ramen chains offering solo set meals. It's efficient and affordable and made just for one person. So a lot of these food franchise or restaurant, they're located in Shenzhen, at least based on our research.

Another one is the barbe que restaurant.

Yeah. This one I this one I like because, you know, from a ramen place, you kind of expect it. And that's part of that's in Japan too. If you go there and eat ramen at a at a restaurant, they'll have separated partition spaces for one.

Yeah. Sometimes standing booths. Right?

Yeah. And some this is kinda cool. They'll put like a partition in front of you as well, which separates you, the diner, from the ramen noodle kitchen area, and then they'll slide up the screen, and then just a hand comes with

your So nobody talks to me kinda experience.

You don't even see their face. It might be a robot. I don't know. Just a hand comes with a bowl of noodles Extreme. And then the screen slides back down.

言归正传。又来到深圳了是吧。我们预料到会有拉面店，但没想到会有烧烤餐厅。但在深圳，他们就是这么做的。他们有一排单人用餐位，同样用隔板分开，每个座位还挺酷的。

Anyway, I digress. In Shenzhen again yeah. So we expect the ramen shops, but we don't expect barbecue restaurants. But in Shenzhen, that's what they're doing. So they have a row of single dining seats that again are separated by partitions, and each seat this is kinda cool.

餐厅考虑得很周到。每个座位都配有手机支架。还有服务呼叫按钮，需要时可以叫服务员过来。餐厅经理解释说，这样设计的初衷是让顾客用餐时能享受更多隐私，充分享受美食，目前反响不错。那个特定位置每周大约接待200位独自用餐的顾客，据说晚上6点到8点间通常有十几桌在排队等候。

Well thought of by the restaurants. Each seat is equipped with a mobile phone holder. They also have a service call button, so you can get the service staff to come when you need something. And then the restaurant manager explained that the original intention behind all of that was to allow the customers to experience a little bit more privacy when eating and enjoy their food fully, and it's gone well so far. They serve about 200 solo diners per week at that particular spot, and apparently, there are usually a dozen or more tables waiting in line between 6PM and and 8PM.

So people are lined up down the sidewalk to to try to get into that place.

Oh, sorry. 200. Then this one gets it to a higher extreme side. So one fast food outlet restaurant in also in Shenzhen said that half of its 4,000 orders in September were from solo diners. And that number just keep rising month by month.

显然，便利性和舒适度推动了这股风潮，鼓励人们...是的，现在正是我独自用餐、享受独处时光的时候。

So it's clear that convenience and comfort are driving this wave, encouraging people to yeah. It's time for me to just eat alone and enjoy the fact that I'm dining alone.

我们之前稍微提到过，对于那些在包装上标注'单人餐'标签的餐厅，这类套餐通常种类更丰富但分量较小。最近我最爱点的就是这种单人火锅杯。准确说不是小杯子，而是装满蔬菜、肉类、菌菇等食材的小桶装，有时还能自选配料。

And we mentioned earlier a little bit about the fact that for those kind of restaurants that put the solo dining tag on their kind of crumble and package you can order, those kind of sets are usually a bit more diverse but in small small proportion. Recently, one of my favorite food ordering is this solo meal hot pot cup. Right. It's precisely a little I don't think it's a little cup. It's a little bucket full of the vegetable, meat, and mushroom, and other things that you sometimes you can select the ingredient you like.

Sometimes they just have the whole set for you. And when you carry your little bucket home or receive it from your doorstep, you can enjoy a hot pot without boiling, without ordering, without worrying about I cannot finish the entire cabbage because it's just so huge. Just pure enjoyment. So we see these kind of food delivery services also providing relatively more adapted and customized design for eaters out there.

It it works too. Putting that label this is from the delivery platforms, the data. Just putting that solo meal label can increase the number of orders from a particular restaurant by 26%. Yeah. Wow.

所以确实有效。

So it's effective.

我不确定是谁率先推出你提到的桶装火锅，洪林。但中国领先的生鲜零售商盒马肯定在积极布局。很多零售商都在大力推行这种模式。盒马新推出的'火锅杯'包含番茄牛肉等口味，买回家用微波炉加热5分钟即可食用。平台运用了速冻技术，并与专业包装供应商合作开发了专属的微波炉安全容器。

I'm not sure which one took the lead to make that sort of bucketed hot pot meal that you mentioned, Hong Lim. But I think one of the leading Chinese food and grocery retailer, Hema, is is definitely stepping in. The retailers, a lot of them are definitely just practicing this very actively. So Hema launched these new hot pot cups, they call it, including flavors like tomato, beef, and everything that cook that could cook in five minutes in a microwave if you purchase it back home. And the platform has applied the rapid freezing technology and also incorporating partnered with professional packaging suppliers to create exclusive microwave safe containers for its hot pot cups.

So like you mentioned, all of these are catering to the details kind of services provided for young people and just just people nowadays to feel safe and feel comfortable of eating alone, buying one of those hot hot pot cups.

Around five or ten years ago, I remember seeing a post on social media saying that one of the loneliest thing or 10 loneliest thing, a list of 10 things that you do by yourself that shows that you're really alone and lonely. And one is eating hot pot by yourself. Oh. Yeah. And other ones include going to hospital or going to a movie theater.

Or searching lists about why you're lonely on social media. Maybe too.

But the funny thing is, I also remembered several years ago in these major and popular hotpot chain restaurants, when you're eating alone, they will bring a huge toy, maybe a huge bear, a the huggable Oh, Really? Yeah. In front of you so it can sit next to you.

No. That makes it worse.

Yeah. It makes that person look pathetic.

Right? Exactly. That's what I'm talking about.

That's the problem. At that time, eating alone is considered something that is a little sad, that needs a bit more attention, that needs maybe an extra plate of watermelon just to make you feel better.

But nowadays, it's considered something cool. Mhmm. And it's even being not being encouraged per se, but you are given different choices, and the restaurants in different places provide different types of services that you can choose.

Yeah. And the same thing's happening in America and Canada too. And also in the West, we had that kind of stigma about eating alone, like, if you're alone. And I used to hate it. I used to hate eating alone because I didn't know where to I didn't know where to look.

You know, didn't you can't stare at the other customers, but yet if you look at your table, there's nothing really there to look at, and so you're just staring at your phone the whole time. But then as I got a little bit older, I started to enjoy the experience of it, and and that is somehow related to this. I found an article from Forbes last year, and they did a survey in The States, and and what it showed was that large in large cities in America, about half the respondents said that they often eat alone. Now that shows that the trend is happening there too, but this is really beneficial for the restaurants because restaurants might think initially, oh, we would prefer to have a larger group of diners eat together. Yeah.

Yeah. Big a bigger bill. Mhmm. Right? But the downside to that is larger tables often stay for longer.

Right.

他们还从另一项研究发现，独自用餐者的消费比其他食客高出约50%。其中一个原因是独食被视为自我关爱。这是你与自己独处、放慢节奏、真正享受美食并反思一天或任何事情的时刻。这与西方过去对独食的看法完全不同。

And they also found out from another study that solo diners spend about 50% more than other diners. And one of the reasons is solo dining is seen as self care. It's a way for you to catch up with yourself, slow down for a moment, and really enjoy your food, and reflect on your day or or what have you. So that's a total shift away from peep the way people used to view solo dining in the West too.

我喜欢独自用餐。也喜欢与朋友共餐——不一定是大型聚会，就是和亲友一起吃饭。我认为重要的是你可以自由选择。两种形式都被视为绝佳选择，都是在照顾自己、享受生活。

I enjoy solo dining. I also enjoy dining with my friends, maybe not a huge party, but, you know, eat together with friends and with family. And what's important here, I think, is that you can choose. Either form is considered a great choice, and you're taking care of yourself. You're enjoying life.

And as long as it's it's good well, in my opinion, it's always a good thing to have more choices. And this one is just becoming a much, much more preferential choice in my opinion. Me too. Yes.

Across China, former mine towns are turning into shimmering playgrounds for tourists. From Shandong to Zhejiang, the hunt for gold has returned. Not really with the kind of tools that you need to be rich, but with smartphones and selfie sticks. What does this gold panning craze say about how we find value in travel, in nostalgia, and experience? What is it about gold panning tourism?

For the record, this is the first time I ever heard about such tours. You can go gold digging literally somewhere. And here's the news. One mining themed park in Eastern China's Zhejiang Province, and it's called Sichang County. They reported a 13% year on year increase in ticket revenue by late August.

Yeah. Well, it was in October that gold prices hit their record high this year. It got up to $4,000 an ounce, so maybe that had something to do with the popularity. Yeah. But it's not like customers to these theme parks are becoming millionaires.

There was one person online who said that her husband managed to find a tiny gold flake, and though hard hard to find a little bit, but not worth much, she said the kids were thrilled

There's another coffee factory or a coffee manor, I guess, is what they call it, Kaohsiung. They developed dual factory routes. One focused on hands on brewing and the other offering a bean to cup field trip. So this kind of industrial tourism is quite popular here in in China, and I think this gold panning experience and the jewelry making and the tour of the museum there is is part of this too.

And it's about not only the museum or the theme park, but the entire city's economic development. For example, in the ones that we talked about in the Hangzhou ones, the annual number of ticket buyers has already surpassed 100,000. And only by the August, ticket revenue was over 7,000,000 yuan, hotel revenue over 2,000,000 yuan, totaling about 10,000,000 yuan, a 13% year on year increase.
