Our perception isn't reality, but how we perceive something changes how we respond. How we respond affects reality. Hey there.

We explore when we're more likely to believe, the purpose of delusions, and unmasking deceptions. The ideas in this episode are from Shankar Vedanta, who's a journalist, writer, and science correspondent focused on human behavior and the social sciences. He's perhaps best known for his hidden brain family of products, book, podcast, and radio program. Now let's dive into the key ideas. The first idea comes at six minutes, where Shankar says, even when deceptions are unmasked, many of us are unwilling to let go.

The reason isn't because we're foolish, it's because those beliefs and delusions are often tied up with things that have become important to us. To challenge those self deceptions also means challenging the relationships we've built through those beliefs, as well as admitting that we were once deluded. The second idea comes around twenty nine minutes, where Shankar says, When we think about the delusions, we're often so focused on the content of the delusions that we forget to ask the deeper psychological question of what purpose the delusion serves in the first place. Understanding the function and purpose of a delusion doesn't mean you need to agree with it. Understanding delusions gives you tools to potentially dismantle dangerous delusions and embrace useful ones.

For the third and final idea, Shankar says, when we are in the grip of fear or terror, anxiety or loneliness, we are far more likely to reach for beliefs that allow us to cope. The reason why we often become deluded is because there is an underlying grief or vulnerability that we're trying to find a way to deal with. When we're outside of that grief, if we don't share in that grief, it's easy to look down at people who believe in certain delusions. And only when we're in those same situations ourselves do we realize how easy it is to turn to such beliefs. A question that we think is worth reflecting on after listening to this episode is, can you think of a self delusion that is useful?

我们还有《The Tim Ferriss Show》、《Hidden Brain》、《Making Sense with Sam Harris》等其他播客的摘要。
