This time, we're talking about finding game shelves in unlikely locations, hubs, rec centers, abandoned cabins in the woods. Game collections can be anywhere and contain many surprises. Yes, please. I, so this is a lighter topic. I was at a family camp over the weekend. And, and as camps do, they they have activities for rainy days. And, this is one of those where the cabins are all in the woods and there's no Wi Fi except just like one building in the entire camp.

And, and I was there, ran into a parent who was using the Wi Fi to make their moves on board game arena, which was a neat discussion. But we also found in the corner a shelf of board games. And and just perusing what was there, like there were a million copies of Uno, but there were some surprises in those shelves as well. And I thought it was kinda cool how often we run into these mini board game collections in places where you don't expect them, and wanted to talk about what we find on those random game shelves. So, yeah, where what's the most unusual or surprising place you've run into a small game collection?

I guess the one that I I tend to be surprised at is when it's like a hotel common room or an Airbnb. And somewhere what it hasn't been billed as a board game central location. It's just this is a vacation destination, and you're you're checking out the living room, and, oh, they they have a shelf of games. And what usually surprises me is that it's not just the, the staples. That's not just a copy of Scrabble and Monopoly, but you might find the little gems.

Who knows? I find these, these little pockets of more interesting games to be delightful when I run into them. Like, you're you're scanning the shelf, and, yeah, there's gonna be copies of UNO and Connect four and and Scrabble. But when you find one that's out of that sphere, like a a resort we went to in Rhode Island had Lord of the Rings, the confrontation, the classic cosmos printing of this game, the two player generally considered pretty, you know, hobbyist. This is not one that you just pick up on a whim.

I don't know if someone seeded the library with that or if the hotel owner decided to put something there. But when I find one of those games, it's a delight. Like, oh, maybe even if it's one that I hadn't really considered playing before, maybe it's one I am gonna get off the shelf because this is the one they decided to sprinkle in amongst all of the mass market stuff. And maybe if it's a rainy day, as you said, Julie, and the parents are sick of playing Connect four, they pull off the one that's different and and maybe try out this two player Lord of the Rings game. I find those really, really cool and a nice little surprise to find, and you almost run into one in every one of these little pocket collections.

Sure. I think the selection has been getting better. Like, I often will see Apples Apples, Ticket to Ride, Catan, Carcassonne. I see these much more often as I peruse these, but I also almost always find one game there, and I'm like, can I throw that away when no one's looking? Because it's, you know, something like advanced squad leader or Woah.

Indeed. I sort of set libraries aside for the end of the discussion because they are a different animal, really. They're they're a cultivated, shelf or multiple shelves. In fact, if you haven't been to your local library in a while, you might be surprised to find what they have on the shelf. My local Simsbury library has a pretty significant game collection with a wide variety of titles.

Our friend, Jen Bartlett, the board gaming librarian, is semi local. And I think she's just celebrated ten years cultivating board gaming at the Manchester library here in Connecticut, and she's got some amazing stuff and puts out themed selections of games. So I'd check out your local library. You might have a very dedicated librarian who is working at cultivating something more significant than what we're talking about.

Right. Airbnbs are hard in the sense or any sort of, any kind of public place, that means you're talking about the public. So whoever comes in, not everybody is going to be as respectful as you're so as an Airbnb person, you're the owner or you're hiring people to clean, and they are probably not they're looking at cleaning and not looking at mending the condition of the games, which means, you know, if you're gonna put them out there correct, every so often, have to go in and cull and put in new ones or try to repair, which again, thrift stores, friends. But that's probably why you see so many copies of Scrabble because thrift stores have so many copies of Scrabble.

There's a wide range of games played, but the majority of games are euros, which will last one to four hours depending on the game and players analysis paralysis. Sam says I hadn't been there for several six months, but he managed to get to a session a couple weeks ago, and he's welcomed back by a guy he enjoys playing games with. And that gentleman said, let's play Merv, which he had just brought from another regular attendee. He had bought it from that attendee.

Maybe his friend is Tom Vessel. Anyway Mhmm. Other people were setting up games, and I assumed Bob would jump in on one of them, but that didn't happen.

Bob wandered off at some point, and I asked the other two what was up as they clearly were dead set against playing the game with Bob. The game could easily have accommodated a fourth player.

It transpired that he had been along several times before, and several of the regulars had said they would never play a game with him again. Sam said I felt bad about the situation.

The meetups are in a public place, and everyone is welcome. Generally, the regulars try and make newcomers feel comfortable and introduce them to easier games if they have no or little gaming experience. Having said that, for many, this is their one chance a week or maybe even month to put get in a heavy thinky game. If they have played a game with Bob before and found it to be an awful experience, then you can you can't expect them to voluntarily go through that same scenario again. Thanks, Sam, for then asking us what would we advise in that situation.

I have met said Bob on multiple occasions.

That's why nobody was why he kept games were getting started, and he wasn't in on it.

So moving on to my thorn. I have been a huge fan of the 18 card escape games, puzzle games from Grand Gamers Guild. There's a whole series of holiday themed ones. I think there's 12 now. There's also an offshoot of the Endangered series, which I've been very happy with.

This is a new series that ties into their other titles, in their board game line, and the first of those is journey to Tir Nanogue. This is a different designer than the holiday ones. So he's he's got a a pedigree of of lots of other board game titles. As far as I know, this is his first escape room game.

In Journey to Tirna Node, you're gonna work your way through these 18 cards. It uses the same system, in entering your answers in. If you're familiar with the holiday hijinks games, you're gonna know how this generally works. The difference here, though, is that while the holiday games are generally pretty family friendly and easy to jump into, they they on onboard you pretty smoothly into these puzzles. You might run into a couple of speed bumps, but it's pretty straightforward.

It it very quickly, even from the first puzzle, not only do you have to go with the context clues that are on the card that you're trying to figure out, but also make a couple of logical leaps that aren't necessarily presented to you. You have to go, well, maybe I need to organize things this way because that would make some sort of sense. And and from then on, it gets more difficult. I was asking for hints from the second question, from the second puzzle.

And so this got a little the like, the frustration level just kept going. And I got past that puzzle, and then it was take these four words and scramble the letters to form four other words, and then do that another five times to get to the end of the puzzle. And then whichever letters you used, cross those out on the it just got more and more complex. And as these then, you know, any puzzle game has this potential to cross the line from being fun to just just let me get through this. And, unfortunately, I found that too many times with this game.

And the final puzzle involves cursive that I'm not sure I could read even knowing how to read cursive.

It's so there was an the original Katsudoku was a roll and write where you wrote the numbers, then you had to fill them in, and it was following Sudoku esque rules where you couldn't have the same number. This one is a two to four player game where you're putting in cards. So you have a nine by nine grid, and you have, I believe, five colors numbered one through nine perhaps. But you're putting down the cards, and you can't have the same color or number, orthogonal in the line or the row or column that you are placing it.

You gain little well, if you get the bonus stuff, they were fish shaped, but otherwise cubes, tokens where you if you pay two, you can play one from your reserve to the board, but if you have them by the end of the game, they're worth negative points.

That's it. That's the whole game. It was light. It was simple. It was very fun, and strategy wise, thinking about, well, I really want them in this column or this area was important.

Okay. So the other week, Eric already talked about playing four doors and how difficult it was to play.

Yeah. I was pretty happy with the the system, though.
那个系统对吧?简单来说:四扇门初始开启状态,当阴影侧积累超过3-4张牌时恶灵会侵入,此时需半闭门扉;若再次触发,则永久失去该门。
The system. Right. So the system, very quickly, you have the four door the four doors, and they are open, and bad spirits can get in if you get up to over three cards or four cards in one side or the other of the door of the shadows. You then partially close the door. If it happens again, you lose that door.
如果你失去了那扇门,且尚未通过它获得神器技艺,你就输掉了游戏。目标就是集齐四件神器,然后点亮顶部的灯笼。嗯。从玩法上看相当直接,算是同类机制中较为轻量的游戏。每位玩家操控一个拥有特殊能力的角色,在门之间上下移动,可能使用“照明”行动驱散部分阴影牌(将其放回弃牌堆)。但每次翻动弃牌堆时,都必须往门两侧放置更多阴影牌。
And if you lose that door and you haven't gotten the art of artifact from the through that door, you've lost the game. The object just get all four artifacts and then light the the lantern at the top. Mhmm. So gameplay wise, pretty straightforward, kind of a lighter weight game for what it's doing. And then each of the players has a character that has a special ability, and you're getting to move up and down between the doors, maybe illuminate, which casts away some of the shadows and puts them back in the discard, which but every time you have to go through the discard, you're upping the number of shadows that you have to put on on either side of the doors.

So to me, playing it solo, you lose all the tension of coordinating with other players. So are you giving up that action because you know they're gonna be able to do a thing? Like, that kind of tension is actually bringing a lot to the game.

I don't know if it's also the because a lot of the specific character cards say, here's here's what their ability is for a solo play, and here's the different thing. And the different thing just isn't it's it's not hidden.

It's they're not. They're either overpowered or not balanced at all. You use an action to switch out characters, so it's not something where you're like, I am playing Oh. This one character, and that's it. You can switch out.

Speaking of hard, have either of you played Regicide ever? No. Yes. So Regicide is a game that I don't know. I think it it it hit the public domain or something around 2020, I believe, is when it it came out.

You flip over a jack, and then you draw a hand of cards, and you have to hit that jack for a certain number of hit points.

They're the same four suits in a sense, but they you know, a sword shows that it's double attack. Shield shows that it blocks. It just makes it easier in your head. And then after you fight these four royals, things happen. Cards are stickered.

Who knows? So there's things like that. But it also has a very fun catch up mechanism, essentially. So when you lose I'm not saying if. When you lose a a battle Yeah.

New cards might show up, ways to change your existing cards, but the bad guys keep having, you know, unique ways. Each time I get to a new one, I'm like, oh, wow.

I can't lose now, not with the deck the way it is. Then they introduce the bad guys, and I go, okay. I'm gonna lose. Okay. I could lose.

But it's fun. It's a fun puzzle. There are some people who swear by playing it multiplayer. I'm not as interested in that mostly because it has that stupid, you can't really communicate rule. And I don't know.

Santa Monica. Right. Santa Monica. And so it has a little bit of that look. It's a very cute look, but the way the game plays is really fun.
