And, of course, what were our rosiest roses, our thorniest thorns, and our hoopiest hoops?

Speaker 0

I'm Eric Summerer.

Speaker 1

I'm Julie Ahern.

Speaker 2

And I'm Tom Bassel, and did not name any of the segments.

Speaker 1

Already?

Speaker 1

Hoopiest.

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

Salty.

Speaker 1

We've just started.

Speaker 0

It's already Hoopiest hoops.

Speaker 0

Now we've barely begun.

Speaker 2

There's a limit.

Speaker 0

The hoopiest hoops.

Speaker 2

There's a limit.

Speaker 0

I've used the same term for the past several years.

Speaker 2

I probably complained then too.

Speaker 1

You did.

Speaker 0

I like saying hoopiest hoops.

Speaker 1

A tradition.

Speaker 2

I will say this.

Speaker 2

I think the episode's called looking back at 2025.

Speaker 2

And looking up the show notes, I'm not sure everyone's in the same year.

Speaker 0

But Oh, interesting.

Speaker 2

So, anyway, yes, it's 2025.

Speaker 2

And if you wanna know the top 10 games of 2025 and all that jazz, it's on our channel, even Eric's.

Speaker 0

Even Eric's.

Speaker 2

I was surprised at Eric's.

Speaker 2

Number one.

Speaker 0

It I was surprised as well, but I I can't I can't deny my heart.

Speaker 0

I can't can't go against the urges.

Speaker 2

Number three will shock you.

Speaker 0

Is that what we're resorting to clickbait at this point?

Speaker 0

很好。

Good.

Speaker 0

Excellent.

Speaker 2

Audio clickbait.

Speaker 2

Alrighty.

Speaker 2

Well, it was a year for sure.

Speaker 2

There was a lot of things that went on in the industry, and we talked about them as we've done this show ad nauseam.

Speaker 2

I think and and I I hesitate to say this because people always take this and run the wrong direction with it.

Speaker 2

I think it was a down year, but I don't mean that in there was no good games and gaming is getting worse and blah blah blah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

There's thousands of great games still.

Speaker 2

It's fantastic.

Speaker 2

It's just that compared to '24 or even compared to, like, ten years ago, 2015, the slate of games that came out was not as jaw droppingly amazing.

Speaker 2

Many, many great games still, and I know there's external factors that have to do with a lot of this.

Speaker 2

Although I don't believe the external factors have a lot to do with the games that came out this year as opposed to you'll see more of effect on the future years.

Speaker 2

But it was a good year, a very good year.

Speaker 2

I just think it wasn't as good as last year, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Interesting.

Speaker 0

I think I think I agree with you, Tom.

Speaker 0

I think there's maybe not as as strong standouts this year, but I do feel like there are just so many.

Speaker 0

There's still an overwhelming number of games, and it's easy to just sort of ignore sections, styles of games, or releases that come out.

Speaker 0

I've I've learned about things that that came out a year or a year or two ago, and and I just didn't realize that they were out yet.

Speaker 0

And and that's the sort of landscape we're in.

Speaker 0

I've noticed, though, that it seems like there's a lot of reprints either coming out this year or in the works announced for, the next year or so.

Speaker 0

And I wonder if that's because it's more of a safe bet, you know, banking on a a known quantity.

Speaker 0

I'm looking at all of these awakened realms deluxe editions of euro games, and, like, castles of burgundy.

Speaker 0

And and isn't there like oh, what?

Speaker 0

There was a a new Kinesia game that just got a reprint announcement that I'm blanking on now.

Speaker 0

But it seems like there's just tons of these anniversary editions or two point o editions of games coming out more so than there used to be.

Speaker 2

Maybe it's just me.

Speaker 1

No.

Speaker 1

It's not it's not just you.

Speaker 1

And, usually, I'm the Pollyanna.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna agree with both of you.

Speaker 1

And, again, we're not gonna get into the nuts and bolts of it, but I agree with Tom that it's because of reasons that still haven't fully resolved.

Speaker 1

So you're gonna see a lot of safer, like, also you said, Eric, safer bets and reprints.

Speaker 2

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Because the other thing being if you a reprint takes a very short amount of time by comparison to a new game to manufacture.

Speaker 1

There's no back and forth of looking, or not as much back and forth of the quality controls and making sure things you can say, I'd like to reprint this, and the factory making them is going to turn it around much more quickly.

Speaker 1

So for windows of shipping, that's a factor.

Speaker 1

Knowing how much they sell, that's a factor.

Speaker 1

And bigger companies have been tending to consolidate towards that.

Speaker 1

Like, Asmode has a lot of its studios doing that regardless now.

Speaker 1

So more and more of that being the trend in the last couple years, but we're seeing a bigger increase in that because of shipping and manufacturing fun things that have happened in the world.

Speaker 0

Do you also save on that development cost if you're doing a an upgrade of a reprint?

Speaker 0

Like, you're doing a special edition of a particular game, you're not developing the rule set, you're just changing the art out.

Speaker 0

Does that also give you some sort of savings?

Speaker 1

Oh, absolutely.

Speaker 2

I do agree with you, though, Eric.

Speaker 2

When I take a look at the reprints or second editions or second versions of games that came out this year, you could make a top 10 list of that.

Speaker 2

Hey.

Speaker 2

I did.

Speaker 2

And It's on the channel.

Speaker 0

Number three will surprise you.

Speaker 2

Well, actually, you know, it's funny because we we I did that top 10 list, and I think my number one I played post that list being made, which is the new Awakened Realms version of Puerto Rico, which is unbelievably cool.

Speaker 0

There we go.

Speaker 0

But, I

Speaker 2

mean, it's not just that.

Speaker 2

There's just there's so many games, whether it's another follow-up like FinSpan or, you know, another Everdell or whatever.

Speaker 2

There's a lot of really solid games out there, and Kenizia remakes all his games all the time.

Speaker 2

Like, because Phoenix.

Speaker 2

是啊

Yeah.

Speaker 2

But but I mean

Speaker 0

Well, there's, like, entire publishers based around Kenizia reprints.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

But they're really good games.

Speaker 1

They are.

Speaker 2

I think that these these older solid games are almost a better bet than the new ones.

Speaker 2

Don't get me wrong.

Speaker 2

There's still a lot of great new games out there, but, what a year for reprints.

Speaker 2

I think that that's my biggest takeaway of 2025.

Speaker 2

I think it was the best year for reprints we've ever seen.

Speaker 1

On a personal level, for me, it was my year of really purchasing selectively so that I could play the games that I bought

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

In a much more conscious way.

Speaker 0

It's a good plan.

Speaker 0

I I always attempt that.

Speaker 0

我还是

I still

Speaker 1

I've I've also attempted it in years past, but this year, was like, no.

Speaker 1

I'm really going to do this and stick to it.

Speaker 1

And so, you know, it I can remember this time last year being like, I still have more than half my Gen Con games that I haven't played.

Speaker 1

And this year, I've played all of them and most of the ones I got at Essent.

Speaker 1

So for me, that's a personal achievement.

Speaker 1

I don't know if that's a trend per se throughout the year, but that was something that I, back at the year, that I noticed doing and being conscious about and hear and I always hear people talk about it, so I don't know if it's a trend per se.

Speaker 0

I'm very happy for you.

Speaker 0

I cannot say the same.

Speaker 2

Fair enough.

Speaker 2

Well, let's jump into Eric's awesome categories.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I mean, I think Julie gets credit for this as well.

Speaker 0

After last year's, run through, she wanted to to do some tweaking, so I think we have to share the blame on this one.

Speaker 1

Well, I'll take

Speaker 2

a look at Eric's stupid categories and Julie's awesome categories.

Speaker 0

So perfect.

Speaker 0

So let's begin with the best game to play at a convention or on the go.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So for me, this year was all about Hot Streak.

Speaker 2

Everywhere I went, I played Hot Streak.

Speaker 2

Hot Streak.

Speaker 2

连击。

Streak.

Speaker 2

Hot Streak.

Speaker 2

I played it at every convention multiple times.

Speaker 2

I play we almost played it last night at our game night, and I was like, it's 09:30.

Speaker 2

I need to go to bed.

Speaker 2

And people are like, please.

Speaker 2

It's like, next time.

Speaker 2

And now I'm playing it live in just a few minutes here on the channel.

Speaker 0

呃。

Derp.

Speaker 0

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That mixed with LightSpeed Arena, which brought back the old game LightSpeed, but with an app that scores it, which makes it amazing.

Speaker 2

And it's so much fun.

Speaker 2

And I would take that to a convention, and I took it to the DiceTyre retreat.

Speaker 2

And it got played, and then the game disappeared from my hands, and people just kept taking it and playing it and playing it.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

I mean, in a good way.

Speaker 2

Oh, okay.

Speaker 0

Oh, in a good way.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I was like, here.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna put the game away.

Speaker 2

Someone was like, no.

Speaker 2

I wanna play it.

Speaker 2

And they took it and talked to people.

Speaker 2

Then those people took it, and it was just fantastic.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That's the one where I could hear people giggling in various places in the game room, which is a massive room, but you can hear suddenly hear giggling and look over and realize that that's what was happening.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's it's a fun one.

Speaker 0

Tom made me play at at Spiel and, good times.

Speaker 1

He made you?

Speaker 0

He made me.

Speaker 0

He's like, Eric, you need to play this game.

Speaker 0

Come over here.

Speaker 0

And I was like, well, I'm standing here.

Speaker 0

He's no.

Speaker 0

过来。

Come here.

Speaker 0

我同意《Hot Streak》。

I I agree with Hot Streak.

Speaker 0

That is seems to be the convention game of the year.

Speaker 0

It it draws a crowd.

Speaker 0

It there's laughing.

Speaker 0

There's screaming.

Speaker 0

Absolutely.

Speaker 0

The only downside is that it is not terribly portable.

Speaker 0

It's an unwieldy squarish box.

Speaker 0

I tried packing it in my suitcase, and it it doesn't it gets in the way of, like, clothes and things.

Speaker 2

Put it in your quiver.

Speaker 2

So a little more board then.

Speaker 0

A little more portable.

Speaker 0

I I guess you could maybe you could just pack it in something.

Speaker 0

Anyway, no.

Speaker 0

You need the board.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yep.

Speaker 0

Smaller portable, ghost lift, card chatting game about getting rid of, your cards, riding an elevator up and and down.

Speaker 0

It's got these cute little ghost meeples, and it's a little more easy to throw into a backpack and just throw it on the table, and everybody goes, oh, cute ghosts.

Speaker 0

So that's that's my selection for on the go game.

Speaker 1

Already making me dial back the whole proud of myself for not getting every game on my list since I couldn't get Ghostlist.

Speaker 1

It was already sold out at Essen by the time I got there.

Speaker 0

Uh-huh.

Speaker 0

公平。

Fair.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Fine.

Speaker 1

So I said it last year because I had the, the Arc Nova version, but it's still Ito.

Speaker 1

I because for me, I'm not running a convention.

Speaker 1

I'm attending a convention.

Speaker 1

It's small.

Speaker 1

It's portable, and it works with people you know well.

Speaker 1

It works with people you've just met.

Speaker 1

It can accommodate a lot of people, and I have the best conversations and laugh the hardest when playing Ito because of various answers.

Speaker 1

I'm still never gonna forget the things most likely to find under a rock being Tolstoy's war and peace that somebody gave us an answer, which made no sense and was somewhere in the middle of the CAC, not, like, most likely or least likely.

Speaker 1

Just, like, it's kinda likely.

Speaker 1

That's a 52.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's never it's never gonna leave my brain ever.

Speaker 2

And it's a good thing

Speaker 1

he doesn't listen to this podcast.

Speaker 1

He'd be mad.

Speaker 1

But he so, anyway, that but I I did say it last year.

Speaker 1

I'd say 1AM jailbreak was my runner-up of games that I also typically had in my bag and will pull out and play, which is another card shedding game where you're trying to just, get increasingly large sets out of your hands and and escape the jail before anybody else.

Speaker 1

And that one also worked because of its namesake of when we were playing it late late at night.

Speaker 1

It just seemed that 1AM jailbreak really just

Speaker 0

Just it becomes more thematic the later it gets.

Speaker 1

People would catch on to the name when I would suggest things that I had in my bag.

Speaker 1

So those are my two.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Let's head to the other side of things.

Speaker 0

This is a game that you need to set aside a whole day for.

Speaker 0

What what one do you clear the calendar for?

Speaker 0

Big game.

Speaker 2

There's a lot that could be put into this category already.

Speaker 2

确实。

Sure.

Speaker 2

But I'm I'm I set aside a day for Regicide Legacy.

Speaker 2

It takes a small little card game Regicide and turns it into Legacy game.

Speaker 2

Does a really good job at it.

Speaker 2

I played this one solo for, like, a whole Saturday.

Speaker 2

Ignored my family.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

I did not.

Speaker 2

But breaking for lunch and swimming.

Speaker 2

Oh, that's it.

Speaker 2

Then we just played Regiside Legacy.

Speaker 2

I really like this one.

Speaker 2

It's a great legacy game that you can keep playing after it's done.

Speaker 2

Very enjoyable.

Speaker 0

I still need to try this one.

Speaker 0

This isn't one that's in the library, though, because it's basically a solo game.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean, you no.

Speaker 2

You could play Regicide with multiple people.

Speaker 2

I prefer it as a solo game.

Speaker 0

But Okay.

Speaker 2

But the I wouldn't put the legacy version.

Speaker 2

And maybe I I could put Regicide in the library, but it's also Regicide's a deck of cards.

Speaker 1

没错。

Correct.

Speaker 2

Legacy changed that up a lot, but you could just take a deck of cards and play Regicide.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 1

For me, I did not have a lot of time this year.

Speaker 1

Just it it was a very hectic year with the and the one game that I did a longer version of that I really did enjoy was doing my father's work, but not just one scenario.

Speaker 1

There's three different packs in the game.

Speaker 1

So doing all three scenarios because each one is about two and a half hours.

Speaker 1

So so spending the day to do all three with breaks in between.

Speaker 1

So you have an act one, an act two, an act three in effect.

Speaker 1

That which I did, and I had a wonderful time doing it.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna say the big crate of a game, the elder scrolls betrayal of the second era, the chip theory games game.

Speaker 0

You could do a a nice full, campaign of this in a day, with it's got sort of a three act structure.

Speaker 0

Each act takes about two hours, two, three hours, if you're really pushing, and you get to develop your character, add dice, add abilities.

Speaker 0

You can go on little side quests, find out a rumor in a bar about something you can do in a cave off in the middle of the map while ignoring your main quest entirely, and and work your way through a character adventure to a big finale, big epic battle at the end, and then you're done.

Speaker 0

You don't have to, you know, play this every Saturday for a month.

Speaker 0

You, you're done.

Speaker 0

And so after a day of elder scrolls, you can move on to something else or reset for the next adventure.

Speaker 0

That's definitely a set aside a day for a game more for setup than anything else just because there's so many pieces in there.

Speaker 2

Alright.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

I don't think Tom can complain about this category.

Speaker 0

The best theming of a game in 2025.

Speaker 2

This one's tricky because there's so many good themed games.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

But I'm gonna spotlight Luthier or Luthier for those who email me.

Speaker 2

It's pronounced both ways.

Speaker 2

看这个

Check it.

Speaker 2

Anyhow Do it.

Speaker 2

This is a game about making instruments, instruments, and it's a big heavy euro style game, but they the theming is still really strong.

Speaker 2

You have these patrons who are like, how comes I'm not hearing any music and I'm paying you money?

Speaker 2

And you're like, yeah, you are, but it's coming.

Speaker 2

I promise.

Speaker 2

So that's very realistic.

Speaker 2

And then just making the different instruments, putting them into different spots in the orchestra.

Speaker 2

I really like it.

Speaker 2

I wish there was more music themed games, specifically classical music.

Speaker 2

I like that a lot.

Speaker 2

And I don't feel like there's enough, and most of the ones that are out there have nothing to do with the theme.

Speaker 2

So this was a nice one to see.

Speaker 2

Luthier from 2025.

Speaker 0

Joy.

Speaker 0

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 2

You guys wanna you guys sign

Speaker 1

up for us?

Speaker 0

Subtle.

Speaker 0

Subtle, Tom.

Speaker 1

I okay.

Speaker 1

So many of the games I play are heavily themed and were in other categories, but my surprise pick at Essen is is what I'm going with here.

Speaker 1

And it's on the other end of the spectrum.

Speaker 1

You have a very heavy euro.

Speaker 1

I have a light children's game that takes less than ten minutes to play.

Speaker 1

我选了《Flo》。

I picked Flo.

Speaker 2

I haven't seen this game yet.

Speaker 1

It's so it's it's a kid's game, and you can get it on Amazon.

Speaker 1

它是...等等...

It's very it and it's a Wait.

Speaker 1

Based on the movie.

Speaker 2

Maybe I'm making fun of you for the wrong reasons.

Speaker 2

This is a different game than I'm thinking.

Speaker 1

That's fair.

Speaker 2

Flowers, I'm thinking of the the the game that has not yet been released from, Pika Games, the booth right across from us, Eric.

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

This is this is based on the animated film.

Speaker 1

没错。

Correct.

Speaker 1

So the animated all

Speaker 2

the fun I made and directed towards Eric.

Speaker 1

Sweet.

Speaker 1

不对。

Nope.

Speaker 1

Or you can save it for later.

Speaker 1

There might be others.

Speaker 1

I'm fine.

Speaker 1

Either way.

Speaker 1

So Flow is a game that is a timed real time game where you are putting down tiles, and you must take turns and wait for somebody to finish to make paths for the four animals from the corners of the board to the center of the board.

Speaker 1

There you have some cards that let you modify some of the the dice the tile playing, and you can have scenarios where you move the you know, have different things that come out on the board as well.

Speaker 1

But, really, it's you're doing it at a minute at a time.

Speaker 1

At the end of every minute, the wave flows through and eliminates one row and one column.

Speaker 1

You're trying to get to the boat in the center or make a a nonstopped path from the corners to the center, or you run out of tiles.

Speaker 1

So either you win the game or lose the game.

Speaker 1

That way, it's cooperative.

Speaker 1

It's super light.

Speaker 1

But what it does is the movie flow is, you know, animals in a postapocalyptic world where humans aren't there anymore, but you see plenty of evidence that they did exist at some point in the recent ish past.

Speaker 1

And they're having their own chaos and adventures and what have you.

Speaker 1

And it goes through a lot of thoughts of, I guess, existential dread and chaos, but finding moments of calm and serenity in between without ever saying any words.

Speaker 1

The game does the same thing where you're frenetically trying to place tiles to get them to the center while the timer is the soundtrack from the movie.

Speaker 1

So you have this beautiful soothing calm music and the sound of a buoy bell ringing, and the ebb of water, and you're frantically placing tiles to try to get before the timer goes off and wipes out half of what you've done.

Speaker 1

So to me, Flow was a thematic game.

Speaker 0

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 0

我选择《Storyfold Wildwoods》。

I'm gonna pick Storyfold Wildwoods.

Speaker 0

This is a solo, adventure game working through some decks, but there are there are a few games that really try to, like, from the moment you open the box, create an experience for you.

Speaker 0

I think, the horrified games have done that by presenting you with something when you first open it up.

Speaker 0

It's like a a splash image on the back of the board.

Speaker 0

《Storyfold》

Story fold does that as well.

Speaker 0

It's an adventure where you're moving through, different pages of a storybook.

Speaker 0

But when you first open it up, it it just begins with, like, long ago in a, you know, faraway land.

Speaker 0

And you're folding, the board is actually part of the storybook.

Speaker 0

It unfolds to a left and a right panel where your cards and decks are gonna go.

Speaker 0

And as you unfold all of that, it's sort of doing the prologue of the beginning of this story.

Speaker 0

It also is very light on rule book.

Speaker 0

A lot of the, mechanisms are taught through the tutorial and the story and the prologue so that you get it through gameplay and not with reading a bunch of, you know, rules references.

Speaker 0

I think there is a reference rule book.

Speaker 0

But it draws you in immediately into this, adventure through the woods, and you're you're just you're focused on that and not on the rules text, which I think is is really, really strong and a a great, storytelling adventure, Storyfold Wildwoods.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I agree.

Speaker 2

That's a fantastic game.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

This is definitely one of Julie's categories.

Speaker 0

This this is a game where we are ignoring the haters.

Speaker 0

This is our guilty pleasure of the year.

Speaker 0

We like this game, and we're gonna play it by gum Yeah.

Speaker 0

No matter what anybody else says.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Can I go first?

Speaker 0

Go for it.

Speaker 2

Why did you write here?

Speaker 1

Because my game is deep regrets, of which I have none playing it.

Speaker 2

啊。

Ah.

Speaker 2

I just thought you wanted to say existential dread two times in a row.

Speaker 2

Uh-huh.

Speaker 2

But you just said that in Flow.

Speaker 1

是的。

I do.

Speaker 1

I I have a type.

Speaker 1

I'm sorry.

Speaker 1

I'm not.

Speaker 1

我不。

I don't.

Speaker 1

I have no regrets in deep regrets or flow.

Speaker 1

Deep regrets is a game where you're deep sea diving, but in a, Lovecraftian kind of ocean, and what you pull up is a high risk, high reward.

Speaker 1

And you have to plan in advance whether you're going to be at sea or in the fishing village, and those will be your action selections for that round.

Speaker 1

Either, like I said, you're fishing and deciding how deep you're going down and higher risk, reward the deeper you go.

Speaker 1

In the village, you are selling, things and then gaining points back.

Speaker 1

But the more you play, the more you gain these regrets, which are mostly flavor cards that then hinder you as the game goes on that you're trying to get rid of.

Speaker 1

Or and and and then at the end, you're having, like, a set collection of the different things that you've collected for points.

Speaker 1

So I like the art.

Speaker 1

I like the theme.

Speaker 1

I like the the writing in it, which is the flavor is delightful, but I also, many people don't enjoy the randomness of of the game.

Speaker 1

I like a good random game, so it doesn't bother me at all.

Speaker 1

I feel like it leans into the idea of the the major point of the game, which is you get what you get and you don't get upset, or you do, and you pick up a card and read what that upset is.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

In the South, you you get what you get and you don't throw a fit.

Speaker 1

Oh, I like that.

Speaker 1

I've never heard it.

Speaker 0

You gotta say it the right way, though.

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

Thank you.

Speaker 1

How about you?

Speaker 0

Speaking of randomness, my my pick is moon colony bloodbath.

Speaker 0

This is the Donald x Vaquirino game about running a moon colony, and you are working through a deck, like a central deck.

Speaker 0

It's sort of a deck building game, but there's only one deck.

Speaker 0

And you work through the deck, and it says nasty things that happen to your moon colony.

Speaker 0

You're gonna lose population left and right, but occasionally, you get the opportunity to take actions, which will let you build buildings and take resources and try and stave off the bleeding, basically.

Speaker 0

You're gonna get robots that try to kill you.

Speaker 0

You're gonna get accidents that happen in the moon colony.

Speaker 0

You're gonna get opportunities to to maybe turn people into boxes.

Speaker 0

It it's a wacky game.

Speaker 0

It also, at first glance, does not look that great.

Speaker 0

They they made I think this is an

Speaker 2

initial first glance.

Speaker 2

At twentieth glance, it still looks terrible.

Speaker 2

What are you talking about?

Speaker 0

Somewhere in the middle, it doesn't look great.

Speaker 0

They I think this is an intentional decision to make it look retro.

Speaker 0

But 100%.

Speaker 0

这样做

Doing so

Speaker 2

intentionally makes their games look bad.

Speaker 2

I agree with you.

Speaker 0

It in doing so, it doesn't.

Speaker 0

It it ends up the font is just not fantastic.

Speaker 0

Anyway, I look past that to the quirkiness of this game.

Speaker 0

I think it's, it's a roller coaster ride.

Speaker 0

I love, getting through the first couple of rounds, and people are like, this is fine.

Speaker 0

What's the problem?

Speaker 0

And then by round two or three, you're like, ah, all of my people are getting sucked out of airlocks, and how do I fix this?

Speaker 0

It's a good time.

Speaker 0

That's Moon Colony bloodbath.

Speaker 2

Tom.

Speaker 2

Did you name this category basically games you enjoyed despite Tom?

Speaker 2

I feel like that's where this category has headed.

Speaker 2

I I don't have any games like this.

Speaker 2

I just say what I think.

Speaker 2

I don't know what other people I do know what other people think about games.

Speaker 2

Most of the games I wanna say a game that I hated despite the enjoyers.

Speaker 2

You know?

Speaker 2

That would be Deep Regrets and Moon Colony Bloodbath.

Speaker 1

Great.

Speaker 1

So salty.

Speaker 2

Both of which I put in the library despite my thoughts on it because I wanna have games that people enjoy even if Yeah.

Speaker 2

Deep Regrets was stolen at Dice Tower East.

Speaker 2

But we got another one.

Speaker 0

呃。

Ugh.

Speaker 0

If anybody is

Speaker 2

Stop taking my games, people.

Speaker 0

Anybody that's, near the library and wants to be taught moon colony bloodbath, I'm in.

Speaker 0

I'll I'll teach you that

Speaker 2

one.

Speaker 2

It will be on the cruise.

Speaker 2

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

Now here's the category where we're allowed to talk about games outside 2025.

Speaker 0

This is our favorite classic that we played

Speaker 1

今年。

this year.

Speaker 1

Sanctioned one.

Speaker 0

The only sanctioned one.

Speaker 0

You know, breaking the rules is fine, but this is the one we're allowed to.

Speaker 0

This is a classic, a game we played this year that stood out that isn't published in 2025 or even, like, the last five years or so, an older game that was a gem.

Speaker 0

Tom?

Speaker 2

Mine's mine's almost 20 years old, and that's race for the galaxy.

Speaker 0

Is it really almost 20 years old?

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Dominion came out in 2008.

Speaker 2

You know?

Speaker 2

Dominion's almost 20 years old.

Speaker 2

Race for the Galaxy was before Dominion.

Speaker 2

I think it was, seven or six.

Speaker 2

But, anyway

Speaker 0

Oh, boy.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

But Race for the Galaxy is such a classic game.

Speaker 2

There was a few game sessions this year where I was like, I'm sick of the new games.

Speaker 2

We're playing old stuff.

Speaker 2

And I played a bunch of the old classics, and this is the one that resonated with me so much that I went around at Dice Tower East and started teaching and playing Race for the Galaxy with people just because I like the idea of playing games with people they've not played before.

Speaker 2

And, Puerto Rico almost makes this list for me too, but I think Race for the Galaxy Jack classic just version of it I love so much.

Speaker 2

The tableau building, I like it a lot.

Speaker 0

That's a good one.

Speaker 1

For me, I we play both both I have At the Gates of Lying and Sentient.

Speaker 1

Those are games that if that Robert will and I will always, no matter what the day will look like, no matter how tower tired we are, if we wanna play a board game and that's and I'm like, I I don't wanna dive into something new or that those are always going to get a yes our house.

Speaker 1

I enjoy both of them incredibly much.

Speaker 1

So Nice.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I I originally, my knee jerk reaction was to say the Pathfinder ACG.

Speaker 0

I've talked about it a lot in the last few months.

Speaker 0

We brought it out with my youngest and sort of rekindled the fire.

Speaker 0

Had to relearn the rules a little bit, but got back into a few adventures and was like, yeah.

Speaker 0

This is still a lot of fun.

Speaker 0

But looking back at what I had played, this was the biggest surprise of a classic game and the biggest change in opinion.

Speaker 0

I had written off your bluffing, the the bluffing card game.

Speaker 0

I owned it at one point, and I I guess it just bounced off the family, and we didn't really like it.

Speaker 0

I let it go, and I got to play it again at, I think, Dice Tower East for the first time in decades and really enjoyed it.

Speaker 0

It is it is a good bluffing game, with some twists and turns and highs and lows, and I I really had a good time trying it again.

Speaker 0

And I I'm glad I did and didn't just go, been there, done that.

Speaker 0

Your bluffing was a good time.

Speaker 1

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

This is this is another one that Julie came up with.

Speaker 0

She wanted us to pick one of our favorite genres and pick one of the games that stood out to us.

Speaker 0

And so I I went with deck building.

Speaker 0

I I was really impressed with Bohemians.

Speaker 0

This is the new one from Portal Games Because of the way it embraces the theme, you're an artist in Paris, and you're trying to not screw up your life, but still create art.

Speaker 0

And and all of the cards have some very whimsical titles to them.

Speaker 0

One of the goals in the game is a begrudging your parents begrudging acceptance of your new life.

Speaker 0

That that's worth victory points right there.

Speaker 2

I love the theming of this game.

Speaker 2

It's very much ingrained in there.

Speaker 0

It is a good time.

Speaker 0

Uh-oh.

Speaker 0

But you are you are building a deck and then using those cards that you draw to, sort of puzzle out, make icons, on your grid of of your day, adding muses to add bonuses to those, getting, the the the nasty cards, the, setbacks that are also going to be a hindrance to you and trying to remove those from your deck and not get them in the first place by going to your day job, and and making it all work, puzzling it all together, and, and trying to efficiently earn some points, through the course of of your art.

Speaker 0

And so I I like how it it is a deck builder at its core, but it does some cool stuff with the puzzling nature, and the theme is just fantastic.

Speaker 0

It also tells you to narrate your day, which gets it bonus points in my book.

Speaker 2

No one does that, do they?

Speaker 0

That's my favorite deck builder of the year, Bohemians.

Speaker 1

I so I haven't played it, but just from the description, that sounds fantastic.

Speaker 2

It's a fun theme for sure.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

For me, I played overwhelmingly this year.

Speaker 1

The most of a genre was puzzle games.

Speaker 2

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

I played lots of them from multiple publishers, and I enjoyed the vast majority of them.

Speaker 1

But the one that has to who won who won the category was a post curious game, Threads of Fate, which is one of the bigger ones.

Speaker 1

It you're gonna be doing it for several sessions.

Speaker 1

You're all of post curious games take have the puzzle part of it, but the narrative is done very well working into what the puzzles are.

Speaker 1

This one, deals with a lot of the, Norse rune stones that have been placed around the world and how that is a mystery already that we haven't figured out why the rhyme or reason of why they were placed all the time.

Speaker 1

And so that is a research thing that people spend time on.

Speaker 1

Leaning into that, you have a researcher who has disappeared while trying to research them, and you're trying to figure out what happened to them.

Speaker 1

And so that was my favorite.

Speaker 1

My runner-up was the exit advent calendar because I bought it for my nephew for his birthday, and then I have a copy.

Speaker 1

And every day, we do one of the puzzles because he lives in Massachusetts, and I'm in Indiana.

Speaker 1

So we get to play do an advent calendar, but remotely.

Speaker 1

而且

And

Speaker 0

That is cool.

Speaker 1

That is pricey, but it was his birthday present.

Speaker 1

And, therefore, it was it was a splurge, but it was it was something that we could do together.

Speaker 1

And he is now a freshman in high school.

Speaker 1

And having a freshman in high school still wanna do something with you and read together and do a puzzle together is is worth it in my book.

Speaker 2

That's So that's my runaround.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I got one of those, post curious big box adventures coming next year.

Speaker 0

It'll be my first big box one.

Speaker 0

I'm very excited about it because their their production is pretty top notch.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 2

It is.

Speaker 2

Absolutely.

Speaker 2

Or I like Dungeon Crawls, and there's a lot of them these days.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 2

There are.

Speaker 2

I think rogue is the one that stands out for me the most.

Speaker 2

Incidentally, two games called rogue came out this year.

Speaker 2

One came out from button shy games.

Speaker 2

That's not the one.

Speaker 2

That one fits in your pocket.

Speaker 2

This one fits in your, Buick.

Speaker 1

Cheesy tiny dungeon crawl.

Speaker 2

But rogue is a just it it's so much fun.

Speaker 2

It's like Gloomhaven but funner.

Speaker 2

And I know that sounds negative towards Gloomhaven.

Speaker 2

I don't mean it to be.

Speaker 2

I think Gloomhaven's a fantastic game, but Gloomhaven is very restrictive in many ways, and Row feels like it releases those restrictions.

Speaker 2

You get to do this fun card combat and fight monsters and all sorts of things and not go, oh, I used that card.

Speaker 2

I, I made a mistake.

Speaker 2

We'll never recover from this.

Speaker 2

There's still lots of fun things to do in it.

Speaker 2

I just enjoy it a lot.

Speaker 2

It's definitely an homage to Gloomhaven, but Rogue really stood out for me.

Speaker 0

I actually talked with the guy at Buttonshire, the one of the the reps at the booth, about Rogue and the name confusion and how, you know, it was very different from their wallet game.

Speaker 0

And they announced that there is going to be a rogue larger box.

Speaker 0

So I kept referring to

Speaker 2

Oh my word.

Speaker 0

This this game, Tom, as big box rogue, and he thought I was talking about their deluxe edition of rogue, the the wallet game.

Speaker 0

And it was a very confusing conversation, and I was talking about things, and he was talking about thing.

Speaker 0

So there's there's really three roves.

Speaker 0

There's probably more.

Speaker 2

Anyway Oh, man.

Speaker 2

I don't know how to respond to that.

Speaker 2

I I feel bad now.

Speaker 1

I just started thinking rogue, rogue, rove, the game.

Speaker 1

What size is Okay.

Speaker 1

I'm just gonna

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

It's time for our big superlatives, and here's Tom's favorite, the hoop, our biggest surprise of the year.

Speaker 0

Tom, you wanna go first?

Speaker 2

好。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So Eric needs to visit the theater in Spooktacular where he will get killed by something in the theater.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Spooktacular, just such a fun game.

Speaker 2

I I wasn't Level ninety nine makes a very specific type of games, and this one is not like their other games.

Speaker 2

Their games had, like, a very anime bent.

Speaker 2

This one's just good old fashioned fifty sixties horror movies, but you are the creatures coming out of the screens and disposing of the people in the theater.

Speaker 2

And every bad guy, whether it's a killer car or a killer clown or a killer robot, I guess they're all killer or something, they they have different abilities, very asymmetrical game, and a lot of fun.

Speaker 2

Spooktacular.

Speaker 0

It's fun just to explore all those different everyone's a surprise in a different play every time you're playing with a different group.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And it also fits in a very reasonable box for how much content you get.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Mine was Oddland, where you are place you are placing animals that are mash up animals on different regions, and they score points.

Speaker 1

It's a very straightforward concept, but the art was just so ridiculous for me, and it made me happy playing it.

Speaker 1

So this is another lightweight this is all play, an all play game.

Speaker 1

And one of their not their tiny ones, but the still the small box, not the smallest box.

Speaker 1

This is gonna get confusing with box

Speaker 2

size conversation.

Speaker 0

It's a big box.

Speaker 1

So you have a set number of animals.

Speaker 1

You pick up a tile, and you must place it.

Speaker 1

So once you place it, that animal is is done.

Speaker 1

You can't change your mind.

Speaker 1

And everybody is also pay placing their map tiles around.

Speaker 1

So the shifting part of it being, you know, very on tile placement where people can edge you out of points because they've placed the tile they want, and then they have to place their animal once the full map is done scoring the points.

Speaker 1

It's very simple, but the art and the mashup of the animals just makes it very goofy and silly for me.

Speaker 1

酷。

Cool.

Speaker 0

酷。

Cool.

Speaker 0

When I first got a look at Zenith from Playpunk, it's a two player or four player tug of war game.

Speaker 0

I was like, yeah.

Speaker 0

This is neat.

Speaker 0

I like it.

Speaker 0

It's I like the vibe.

Speaker 0

It was it was pretty cool.

Speaker 0

It was just sort of a, you know, middling.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Positive.

Speaker 0

I liked it.

Speaker 0

And the first couple of plays were, yeah, good stuff.

Speaker 0

But I have had a chance to play this a lot more since then, and a lot of it on board game arena, which is is very helpful to to throw that up there, but physically as well.

Speaker 0

And this is such a cool game, in in multiple paths of victory that you can, focus on one planet.

Speaker 0

You're you're you got these planets that you're trying to tug of war toward your side of the board, and most of that's gonna be through the play of cards.

Speaker 0

And you can play the card just to simply move the tokens toward you and trigger some sort of ability that costs coins, or you can spend the card to do a technology.

Speaker 0

There's a technology track that has cascading, effects.

Speaker 0

So the farther you go up the track, you get to, trigger this ability, then the one below it, then the one below it, then the one below it.

Speaker 0

So if you really push up there, you get to do some really big things, or you can simply discard it for free and get a little minor bonus, but draw more cards, at the end of your turn.

Speaker 0

And you're just trying to tug of war, these these tokens.

Speaker 0

And if you get three of the same, four that are totally different or just five tokens, you win the game.

Speaker 0

And keeping track of all of those avenues, those multiple ways of scoring, the the multiple victories, it just really flows.

Speaker 0

It all clicks in my head.

Speaker 0

The, anime style art is very cute.

Speaker 0

The names of the cards are fun.

Speaker 0

It it flows and and just really clicks like a fine watch.

Speaker 0

So Zenith was a surprise and is actually my favorite game of the year, and I didn't expect it to be when I first saw it.

Speaker 2

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 2

酷。

Cool.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

Let's get grumpy again.

Speaker 0

Time for the sharpest thorn of the year.

Speaker 2

See, now that makes sense.

Speaker 2

There are so many games.

Speaker 1

You're a mean one, mister Tom.

Speaker 2

I love Christmas.

Speaker 2

I just hate bad naming.

Speaker 2

Anyway, speaking of that, oh my word.

Speaker 2

Let me talk about Feel Like a Fool.

Speaker 2

Mhmm.

Speaker 2

Feel Like a Fool, which is from a good publisher, Cradio Creations.

Speaker 2

But Feel Like a Fool is a game where Eric is Eric, do you remember the song I Like to E E E E Eples and Beninis?

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I like that one.

Speaker 2

是啊

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I'm sure you do.

Speaker 2

A classic.

Speaker 2

A classic.

Speaker 2

But this game takes that to 11.

Speaker 2

So what it does is it gives you a word.

Speaker 2

Let's say the word is elephant, and then you have a vowel, which might be you.

Speaker 2

So you need to get people to guess what an elephant is, but you must turn all the vowels in your words to use.

Speaker 2

What does that mean for silent e's?

Speaker 2

The game doesn't explain.

Speaker 2

What if can I say oh or ah?

Speaker 2

The game also doesn't explain that.

Speaker 2

But what it does make you sound is like this.

Speaker 2

And so you sound like that, and people are like, you know what?

Speaker 2

Just stop talking, and let's get a different game out.

Speaker 2

So that's what you do.

Speaker 2

I hate it so much.

Speaker 2

This is But

Speaker 1

this was a cranio?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 2

But not only is it that, like, that's bad as it is.

Speaker 2

But then when you get someone to guess the word, you turn over a tile in the middle, and you're trying to spell a word.

Speaker 2

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

你要找出所有的元音字母,a e i o u。

You're trying to get all the vowels, a e I o u.

Speaker 2

You might not get a vowel.

Speaker 2

There were some that are blank.

Speaker 2

Like, oh, we got it, but nothing.

Speaker 2

Hey.

Speaker 2

I remember when that was first introduced in trivial pursuit, and everyone thinks that's a stupid rule there too.

Speaker 2

At least trivial pursuit has a good trivial part to it.

Speaker 2

I hate this game.

Speaker 2

So bad.

Speaker 2

Feel like a fool.

Speaker 2

Properly named.

Speaker 0

Uh-huh.

Speaker 0

Uh-huh.

Speaker 0

Uh-huh.

Speaker 0

Julie?

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

So one, I should have known better than play it because even when I talked about reviewing it back in beginning of the year, Tom said, I'm shocked that you even played this.

Speaker 1

So to be fair, grain of salt, folks, this was not a game for me, and that was Lynx.

Speaker 2

We should spell it l y n x because there's a lot of games called Lynx.

Speaker 0

That's very true.

Speaker 1

Not yes.

Speaker 1

L y n x。

L y n x.

Speaker 1

The the you are a trapper hunting for animal pelts, which just thematically isn't for me.

Speaker 1

But also gameplay, it I'm not I'm not I'm not gonna drag it too much.

Speaker 1

I it went for me, it out it outlived its playtime by quite a bit.

Speaker 1

We stopped halfway through the game and said that was enough of this.

Speaker 1

So I it was not the game for me.

Speaker 1

It was my thorniest thorn,

Speaker 0

确实。

for sure.

Speaker 0

I, I bounced off the puzzles in Journey to Tirnah Nogue pretty hard, and that was going to be my pick.

Speaker 0

But then looking back, I remember Donald Duck in Happy Camper, which is a retheming of another game that had nothing to do with Disney characters.

Speaker 0

角色。

Characters.

Speaker 0

And and so this has been rethemed into what appears to be a family weight, you know, adventure game, a kid's game almost, but is far more restrictive than that.

Speaker 0

And what made this a thorn for me is that I strung together some really fun stuff and maneuvering around the board and using my powers and really felt like I was doing a winning move and then realized the game said, no.

Speaker 0

You can't do that because there's all these rules about when you can trigger your ability.

Speaker 0

You can only do that before you move or after you move and not during your turn.

Speaker 0

And so all of this awesome puzzle solving that I had just done, no.

Speaker 0

The game smacked me down and said, no.

Speaker 0

You can't do that.

Speaker 0

And I didn't like that.

Speaker 0

I didn't.

Speaker 0

That's Donald Duck in Happy Camper.

Speaker 0

It just it's far more it's far more thinky and restrictive of a system than it would appear from the happy campers on the box.

Speaker 2

Problem with this game is I think it's a bad game objectively for the hobby because people are gonna go into the store and buy it.

Speaker 2

And they're like, I love Donald Duck.

Speaker 2

Then And they're gonna play and go, what is this?

Speaker 2

And Yeah.

Speaker 2

And that will turn people away from gaming, and I dislike that.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I I I can't disagree with that one.

Speaker 1

Very mad at it.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

You don't want people mad at board games.

Speaker 1

正确。

Correct.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

I need I need I need a a flowery finale, a glitzy finale, as they say, the rosiest rose.

Speaker 2

Go ahead, Eric, because yours is you could have put yours under the, games other people hate.

Speaker 0

You know what?

Speaker 0

I probably could have done

Speaker 2

的。

that.

Speaker 2

Controversial.

Speaker 0

It really is.

Speaker 0

So Vantage is the game I'm talking about.

Speaker 0

This is an exploration game, period.

Speaker 0

You are crash landing on a planet.

Speaker 0

You are given a card that is your individual perspective of what the world is, and then you have actions you can take.

Speaker 0

You can there's they're listed on the side of the card.

Speaker 0

You see a funny looking rock, and you can kick the rock.

Speaker 0

You can observe the rock.

Speaker 0

You can talk to the rock.

Speaker 0

You can do all these things, and that leads to a storybook, entry and, some sort of consequences.

Speaker 0

You need to roll some dice, and depending on how difficult the action is you're trying to do, you're rolling more dice.

Speaker 0

You can then soak up the results of those dice on your little character card to make it less bad, but any dice remaining are gonna cause you to lose morale, health, time, etcetera.

Speaker 0

And you work your way through the world and try to solve a a major goal.

Speaker 0

And then you can, along the way, find other goals and try and solve those as well and improve your stuff and meet people and talk to people and interact with the world.

Speaker 0

But there's not a lot that you are presented with at the beginning of the game.

Speaker 0

You this is a stumble about sort of game and push buttons and see what they do.

Speaker 0

I love that.

Speaker 0

I love not knowing what is around the next corner, looking to see what's there, climbing a tall tree to get a better look at what I'm doing.

Speaker 0

It's really cool.

Speaker 0

And this this pushes all of the buttons for me.

Speaker 0

Love this game.

Speaker 0

Others have bounced off of it because those goals are so nebulous.

Speaker 0

They feel like, well, what am I even doing here?

Speaker 0

I'm just walking around.

Speaker 0

I'm bumping into stuff.

Speaker 0

I I don't I and if you really push toward your goal, maybe you can achieve it really fast, but other games, you're not gonna get to do that, and you're just hoping to run into one of those major epic goals.

Speaker 0

But I love that.

Speaker 0

The the looking around and and the fact that there is this whole world represented by what?

Speaker 0

Like 1,700 cards that I can look around and explore and and see and multiple games tell me a little bit about the world and tell me what works and what doesn't in there.

Speaker 0

Oh, man.

Speaker 0

I wanna play more.

Speaker 0

优势。

Vantage.

Speaker 0

That is my rosiest rose of the year.

Speaker 1

You and I should play.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I

Speaker 2

also I really like this game too.

Speaker 2

所以

So

Speaker 1

It was very fun.

Speaker 1

But it is a storytelling game at its heart, and you either enjoy those or don't.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Julie, what about you?

Speaker 1

For me alright.

Speaker 1

So I have listed here for Maj, which was not coming out this year.

Speaker 1

So let's say Formagio.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Let's say that.

Speaker 1

Both of those have this for me, it is it it was Formage.
